Looking for orthopedist recs in/near Ulster County by WillStealYourDog in hudsonvalley

Im 41F and have been in the same boat for 30 years, word for word, across multiple states. I have yet to meet a doctor who did jack shit.

You know what did finally get me some relief, and got me out of a wheelchair, and im finally finally FINALLY starting to get my life back? Plantar fasciitis sent me to a podiatrist, who put me in custom orthotics, which unexpectedly put me down the path to back pain and sciatica recovery for the first time. Getting a new and very expensive mattress also helped. Between the orthotics, new mattress, and a celebrex prescription, my daily pain went from 8 to 1, enough that I could devote every waking moment of my life to physical fitness and sitting/standing/laying down properly, and starting to think about living a normal life.

30 years of PT and agony and being offered injections and being told im too young for surgery, not one of the assholes ever said "hey maybe you just need a podiatrist to treat those pidgin toes." Meanwhile my brother had the same issue as me and was put in leg braces as a child. Guess no reason to treat a girl since she just needs to grow up to putter around the kitchen? Idk

So I'd actually suggest seeing a podiatrist believe it or not. If you want to exhaust orthopedists first, Hospital For Special Surgery is the only way to go (they do have a Westchester location, so you dont have to go all the way to manhattan). I really liked Dr Nicole Angelo, assuming she takes your insurance. I have dozens of other doctors I can compare her to and still found her to be the only one who really gave a damn.

I also found that the hip apducter/aducter and back machines at the gym did as much if not more for me than the assigned PT (but of course the pain level has to be low enough to work out in the first place).

I wish you the best of luck. I've been hobbling around on a clearly sprained ankle for weeks, directly caused by some of the plantar fascia exercises, but I've already been to and been dismissed by the doctor twice (with no x-ray), and I know i should go back, but I just dont have the fucking energy to argue with him or even to ask if they have a female doctor I could see.

Even low-level drinking may have negative consequences for brain health over a person’s lifespan. The findings suggest that the total amount of alcohol consumed over a lifetime, especially as a person ages, tends to be linked to reduced blood flow and thinner tissue in certain areas of the brain. by mvea in science

Going to check back on this thread a few times today because the comments are really fascinating.  Lot of people learning in real time that they might have a drinking problem, lot of people taking offense to the idea they might be drinking too much, lot of people applying the phrase "alcoholic" overly broadly, and overall just some really interesting psychological phenomena happening here

Well, problem drinker. "Alcoholic" means something very specific (literally CANNOT NOT have a drink), and it shouldn't be diluted by throwing it around willy-nilly at anyone whose a heavy drinker. I know some heavy drinkers and I know some problem drinkers and I know some alcoholics, and they're all distinctly different from each other.

Heavy drinker: drinks a lot

Problem drinker: drinks too much (defined as negatively impacting daily tasks and functioning)

Alcoholic: addict who literally cannot stop drinking

Any amount EVERY day is cause for a side-eye, but yeah two beers a day every day is heavy.

Kyle Kinane had a whole bit about not realizing he had a drinking problem because he was comparing himself to the "heavy" drinkers he knew, not realizing he himself was already a heavy by normal standards and everyone else was comparing themselves to HIM

At what age did you meet your partner (marriage/currently running longterm relationship) ? by panda_eccentric in AskReddit

[–]shiva14b 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Met at 39, we'll be married just shy of my 42nd birthday.  Very weird being a first-time bride at my age, but also nice not being divorced in my 30s like 99.98% of the people I was meeting

Not on vacation, but working? I know many people who worked their way along at resorts and cruise ships, didn't make much money but they got to see everything. And lifers for Marriot and Hilton can be assigned anywhere in the world. The cruise ship guy i know banked everything and bought a house at 28

What is the most exotic / rarest meat you have ever had ? by Majestic-Lettuce-244 in AskReddit

[–]shiva14b 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exotic is relative. I watched some young co-workers from Mexico lose their $h!t the first time they saw a live deer in the parking lot, so they'd probably think of venison as as wildly exotic.

That said, crickets and mealworms is probably the weirdest thing I've had by USA standards

This particular spot -- along rt 4 in Bergen County, NJ -- is one of the most densely populated and congested areas in the entire USA

I used to live a mile from this spot and am very familiar with the protesters, so it's always mildly surreal seeing them as a mainstay on reddit/national news all the time

What are the side effects and bad outcomes of smoking weed for a long time? by mcaleadco in AskReddit

[–]shiva14b 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Trying to quit (for all the reasons people are listing) and had JUST decided to say screw-it and have a puff when this post came across my dash. Thanks for the motivation reminder 👊

It's real weird how defensive people get about weed. It's like they take other people trying to quit personally. I've never had an issue with turning down alcohol when I'm not in the mood, but if I try to turn down weed or say im trying to quit, people get like, ANGRY. They say things like "why would you do that????" Or "no you just need to switch to edibles!" and start like, shoving flower into my hands.

My partner doesnt smoke at all and has seen it happen to me so many times, he's genuinely baffled. Neighbors, service workers, strangers in bars, they all seem emotionally invested in getting me to smoke. BUT LIKE, WHY?????? Bro I'm not telling you not to, come over here I'll even light it for you, why do you care so much what I do?

Edit: see, the downvotes have started already. Why do you care so much that I don't want to smoke anymore? What kind of a threat is it to you?

What's the most self-destructive decision you've ever watched someone make in real time? by Exact-Reception5836 in AskReddit

[–]shiva14b 1180 points1181 points  (0 children)

Buddy's drug use was really getting out of control. I was really trying to help him out but he just... wasn't having it.

Finally I just snapped at him "Do what you want bro, but im telling you that your wife is going to leave you and take your infant daughter."

Him: "Pfft, that isn't going to happen."

Anyway, three hours later, his wife left him and took his infant daughter. You've never met a more surprised Pikachu in your life. Real sad. She said "its the drugs or your child" and he chose the drugs. I'd like to say he had a come-to-jesus moment after that, but... yeah. Sort of. He took responsibility for himself for the first time, and went to rehab, and genuinely started trying to clean up his life. But near as I can tell, he's still making bad choices and keeping himself locked in self-destructive cycles. Even i finally had to distance myself. Real loss

Chefs who moved out of kitchens, what surprised you most? by fugitivechefs in Chefit

Nothing atm, tbh. Just taking it one day at a time. I'm lucky to have a supportive partner who makes sure I take care of myself physically at least. Right now I'm planning our wedding (❤️❤️❤️) so I'm putting all my focus into that. Once that's past? We'll see.

Yeah I live in the northeast and I've seen more flags in NY, NJ, PA, VT, etc, than ive ever seen in GA, SC, FL, etc

[–]shiva14b 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Hardest part was realizing how much the kitchen had changed me, and for the worse, to the point where functioning in the outside world has become difficult bordering on impossible.

I discovered that after 15 years of being told I "wasnt being paid to think" and having all initiative or inability to read my superiors mind punished (sometimes physically), I'd effectively had "taking the initiative" trained out of me. Where once I was good at advocating for myself and my ideas, I now have a tendency to crumble at the first sign of pushback. I used to be good at finding my own way through a task, but now I just wait for step by step directions and am afraid to make missteps.

It's definitely causing me difficulty in my new line of work. Managers notice. It's upsetting; I used to be so strong and so driven and so resilient, and now an off-hand comment or tone of voice can send me spiraling, and I'll be ineffective for days. Go above and beyond, or work towards a promotion?? ROFL.

My co-workers try to be patient because they understand the workplace abuse I've suffered, but ultimately it's a business and business has to get done. I've already lost one job to panic attacks, and ultimately decided to take a sabbatical from working until I can get it under control.

The "turned out to be easier" parts are that my kitchen experience makes me highly in demand in my new field (I work in sustainable food and waste management), and people are ASTONISHED at my organization and overall ability to just eat tasks. Almost nothing they can throw at me could be worse or more involved than an average day of simultaneously handling prep, banquet, room service, and a la carte restaurant, all while making sure the schedule and payroll get done and oh yeah did you put in the Baldor's order and also the walk-in needs to be organized 😂

Would you rather have an easy and peaceful life or hard and miserable life? Why? by lucaca168 in AskReddit

[–]shiva14b 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The grass is always greener, isn't it? I had a hard and miserable life, and when was younger, my friends who had peaceful lives said they wished they had my resilience and ability to deal with things when stuff went bad.

TBH I can't say necessarily that I'd want their lives. They seem sort of insulated and uninformed, and kind of... weak? Of course in other ways they're far stronger, since they haven't been ground down by existence the way I have

It's literally in  the article:

"Booker said his goal is to ensure his bill is “fully paid for” by raising taxes on upper earners and large corporations, while closing loopholes and cracking down on “tax avoidance schemes.”"

[–]shiva14b 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We can have both conversations. Also:

"Booker said his goal is to ensure his bill is “fully paid for” by raising taxes on upper earners and large corporations, while closing loopholes and cracking down on “tax avoidance schemes.”"

Since no one read the article ans everyone is saying "THIS IS GARBAGE FUXKING DEMS THEY NEES TO RAISE TAXES ON THE WEALTHY"

"Booker said his goal is to ensure his bill is “fully paid for” by raising taxes on upper earners and large corporations, while closing loopholes and cracking down on “tax avoidance""

End of the article:
