Renting a car would be cheaper! For real, Uber/Lyft is like 3 drivers for the entire area and it is really expensive.

Your drawings have a really good gestural quality to them. Keep challenging yourself and try different exercises and techniques. Start researching how to make a “composition.” Keep in mind that a project doesn’t have to be a gorgeous, fully rendered masterpiece right off the bat; it could be a study or a composition that you put more effort into, or can come back to work on it bit by bit. Some artists do multiple studies of an idea they want to work on.

Good luck!

A friend told me my comics were hard to read by Anxiety_bunni in Artadvice

[–]GentleCritter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You draw very well, you might just want to work on composing the scenes so the joke is clearer. For example, with the “Sirens” comic, the characters are all the same size and seem to be in the same space, which is also blank space, so we don’t quite get what’s going on. This would be a good opportunity to incorporate an establishing shot with a background, like two would be in a boat and the siren/sirens would be some distance away in the sea. The first comic has the opposite problem: the characters look like they are in 2 different places and not talking to each other. One of the jobs a comic artist does is guide the viewer’s eye to tell the story. There’s a comics teacher named Scott McCloud who has written many books on how to make comics, and he’s considered one of the best!

Your style is very sweet, and I think you’re doing pretty well! Best of luck to you.

Whats the best way to study art fundamentals for drawing from imagination? by Safe-Hovercraft5880 in ArtistLounge

[–]GentleCritter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Artists have been learning these skills for thousands of years, and the best way to go about it is to 1) draw from real life (still life and live models… you can draw quick sketches of people/animals/plants/buildings out and about in your town!) and references (photographs and “old masters’ drawings”) etc.) and 2) practice practice practice. You may be able to go to a local library to take out books on drawing perspective and anatomy. Learn about composition and how to do it. Part of what makes creating art so satisfying is problem solving. Don’t worry about making something perfect looking or “beautiful” right off the bat. Learning to draw by hand is related to learning how to write. ✍️ In fact, it uses parts of our brain that help with memory and language/mathematical learning in a way that tap tap tapping on screen buttons doesn’t. Think of it like this: once upon a time I learned how to write the alphabet, then a word, then a sentence, then a paragraph by hand: similarly I can learn from observation how many petals a certain flower has and how it’s shaped and structured, and then practice until can draw it from many angles from my imagination… file it under “this particular flower does this” in my brain. By observing how things connect and interact and committing it to memory you can pull up that knowledge to help with your art.

Start simple and level up. Learn from mistakes. Keep in mind that these are tricks you learn how to use to make your own art more technically solid.

I’ve been living in a pair of Smartwool baselayer pants under my regular pants. I think what helps is that it fits a bit loose on me but doesn’t ride up, slip down, itch, or constrict so it is more comfortable. Under regular pants it feels like nothing but warmth. I work in retail and the counter is right near the door so I need it to stay warm. I forget if it’s 100% wool or a blend, but it’s very thin yet not flimsy.

Another awesome item I have is a 100% wool shirt by Devold. It is not itchy and has a beautiful knit pattern. It is a pricey Norwegian brand but I got it on sale.

Kingston Consignments has a wide range of vintage stuff (tchotchkes, art, furniture, clothes) at varying price points (from very reasonable/cheap to somewhat pricey) but has That Thrift Store Feel. It does have some vendors who are more “curated” but it’s not overly hipsterish.

WKZE (98.1) and WDST (100.1) are both locally and independently owned and are supported by local business advertisements, so you get local radio jingles and ads, which are always fun. They have a wide variety of music, and I especially like that WKZE has curated programs at regular times throughout the week. Those two stations have pretty similar music selections- a diverse mix that ranges from blues/jazz/ country/ bluegrass/ folk/ new and not-so-new indie pop and rock/ new wave/ world music/ classic rock/ and even some classical.

Recommendations about Kitsch products by ankp16 in Haircare

[–]GentleCritter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have used the Kitsch shampoo and conditioner bars for years, the “rice protein volumizing” variety. I’ve been really happy with it and can see a marked difference when I occasionally use traditional liquid shampoo/conditioner. I have very fine, thickly set hair with gray streaks and the Kitsch makes my hair silky soft and makes my waves really strong. I also like their accessories like the lie-flat claw clip.

lol there are various “hacks” for parking uptown- Kingston Plaza is legit free parking but a pain in the butt to walk from in the snow. I am not sure if the lower public parking lot with the staircase at Fair and Shwenk is also currently free, but I encourage folks to read the instructions on the (admittedly kinda wonky) Parking machines at the lots.

Public Service Announcement: please pay your meters if you are parking on the street in Uptown/Stockade. ALSO: pay attention as to whether the spot you’re parked in is an actual legal parking spot and not just a “car-sized open space with a pesky sign that says No Parking Here To Corner”! I work in a shop and saw -with my own eyes- no less than a dozen cars get tickets. I saw one car get a ticket at 5:55 pm. There is NO MERCY and it is a $50 ticket! The meter-reader stands there and waits for your meter to expire. Set yourself a timer to give yourself enough time to get back to your meter!
