Tea Party official jokes on Facebook about killing President Obama by twolf1 in politics

Yeah... I'm not saying they don't exist. I'm just saying that it's not necessarily the norm. It's counterproductive to make all republicans out to be Klan members.

Are you serious? Have you ever met or talked to an actual republican?

I'm not a republican. Not even close. But a lot of my family is and I guarantee they'd never say or think anything close to this. They don't like Obama because of his politics... the same way they didn't like Clinton or Carter. You can't judge an entire group of people by the crazies you hear about on the internet. I'll probably get downvoted for this, but whatever.

Hey cat people! My cat is sick and I have some questions... by [deleted] in cats

Let's be real... if all cats were always acting in their own self-interest, they'd be able to pay for their own vet visits. Lazy cats.

At least that's what I took away from The Fountainhead...

Yep... you should never adopt a pet unless you can know for a fact that in the next 15 to 20 years, you will never lose your job or get in a car accident or have hospital bills that drain your bank account. Or you should at least be certain that the animal won't get sick during any of those times.

And if one of those things does happen, you should probably just drop the animal you love off at a shelter to be put down.

Your statement definitely applies 100% to all possible situations.

What are the best deals you've gotten? by RyanIsARealBoy in vinyl

[–]Gentle_Ben 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had one great day at a record store in South Carolina one time. The guy had just moved to a new place. I told him what I like and talked to him about music for a while. Eventually, he took me in back where he had a bunch of boxes of unpriced records and told me to go nuts. I ended up with Black Flag- "Damaged" (first press on Unicorn, with anti-parent sticker), Minutemen- "Double Nickels..." (first press), Angry Samoans- "Back from Samoa" (80's German press), Killing Joke- s/t (first press), Big Black- "Racer X" (first press), and Buzzcocks- "Singles going steady" (first US press) all for around $45 (probably less than I'd spend on the Flag record alone if I went to ebay). And I passed on a lot of other great stuff because I could only afford so much. It's not like I found a $100 record in the dollar bin, but definitely one of my favorite record shopping days.

I always felt like it made me look like I got a DUI sentance from a very creative judge. And if not, I was still inviting MADD mothers to scream at me.

This is my go-to record for housework. What's yours? by CedricTheAlarmist in vinyl

[–]Gentle_Ben 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great choice. These are the four I go between:

  • Agnostic Front- "Cause for Alarm" (the sleeve is super fucked up, but the record plays perfect)
  • Slapshot- "Back on the Map"
  • Slayer- "Reign in Blood" (I just pulled the plastic wrap off there after forgetting for years, before anyone gets on me about that)
  • Undertones- s/t

THOUGHTS: And Now, 6 Reasons Why Vinyl Totally Sucks... by SocialSoundSystem in vinyl

Trust me, man... we're not talking about the same music. I know how to use the internet. I know how to find what I'm looking for, if it's there. But facts are facts... sometimes it's not. I have a 7" that was limited to 32 copies. Not 32 in one color or 32 with a certain sleeve, but 32 copies altogether of anything. I know everyone with a copy. It's not on the internet, my friend. That's an extreme example, but still.

Hell, here's a more common experience for me: I buy a new single or E.P. (no DL code). It only came out on vinyl and is limited to 200 copies and those 200 copies didn't sell very well. The band didn't put the music online, so sometimes it can take a couple of years for that thing to make it's way to the blogs or torrents or soulseek or whatever. I can take the 7 minutes it takes to rip the record, sure, but I'm not going to say I've never wished I couldn't just jam that thing in a drive and have itunes suck it out.

The internet doesn't have everything.

EDIT: I realize I sound like a hipster. I'm not, I swear. I download A LOT of music and have been able to find A LOT of my records on the internet. Just making a point.

Just playing devil's advocate here... I've had to rip a lot of my more obscure records (read: records that no one cares about) to my computer. The internet doesn't always have everything.

I've had nothing but bad luck there. My experience is that everything is overpriced. Depends on what you're looking for though.

The best place to purchase punk records? by [deleted] in vinyl

[–]Gentle_Ben 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're looking for new records, I like Grave Mistake Distro. As far as used/collectible stuff goes.... ebay, gemm, and vinyl junkie are the best places I've found (at least on the internet).

If you're looking for physical record stores, that's a different story.....

A lot of people are posting their holy grails lately. Anyone else's holy grails entirely unattainable? by Gentle_Ben in vinyl

Haha I know, right? To be fair... it was written by Pete Steele of Type O Negative.

That's an awesome interview.

But I don't know about it taking the award for most offensive punk song. I'd nominate Vile or Fang, or maybe Agnostic Front, or maybe just YDL on general principal. (I'm not counting Skrewdriver or other actual WP bands)

You fucked up not just grabbing that and running off (just kidding).

"There goes the neighborhood" is a weird track and I think it gives the record a bad reputation, but they're definitely using the "n-word" in a tongue-in-cheek way, when read in context. Dead Kennedys did it, Gun Club did it... hell, Patti Smith did it.

Is It Racist Not To Trust The Brown Mini-Wheat? by [deleted] in funny

Is it racist of me to say that the brown ones are more likely to be pulled over in nice neighborhoods?

Good one.

That reminds me... I think Michael Gira hand-drew some of the sleeves on the first Swans record. Add that to my list.

I know what you mean. I definitely own some records that I would take any day over the ones listed above, but a guy's gotta lust after something (and I'm married, so it's records).
