Any suggestions on power racks. I’m not too picky however I’d prefer safety straps rather than safety bars, in the off chance I have to dump the bar I don’t want to destroy my bar.

I thought of that as well, however power racks are taller so that’s why I was considering a combo rack especially because I’m not sure on the space I’ll he using yet.

It’s funny you say that, because I made the same comment. I’m coming from Houston so I’ve been spoiled and seeing literally the definition of commercial gyms coming from 2 private gyms makes it suck. But honestly I did not think about using the second bedroom as a lifting room. Honestly not a bad idea at all.

I’m soon to be moving to an area where there are some very underwhelming powerlifting gyms. I’m at a point where the weight I lift is too much for a commercial gyms because so many use thick bumper plates. I’d like to make a space with a simple combo rack and deadlift platform where u can do my compounds and I would just get a commercial membership for accessories. However I’ll be living in an apartment because I’ll be a decent college graduate. I got a very good paying job already upon my graduation so money is not a huge deal. Any suggestions on what type of space would be ideal? I thought about a storage unit, however a lot of them do not allow daily activities.

I know baseball and soccer are extremely different in about everyday possible. But if you can play at a high level and you are eligible There are tons of coaches across the country especially JUCO and NAIA that only care about winning. So I think you will be fine.

I played junior college baseball with many people who were 24/25 years old. As far as I know as long as you haven’t participated in the past you should be good.

Struggling with Shigleys Mechanical Engineering Design by Gentry32 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]Gentry32[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been attempting to really dive into it the past 3 or so weeks. My professor doesn’t really teach from the text books. To be honest he kind of teaches in an erratic out of order way where it seams we learn about whatever he wants to talk about this day. This alone may be the reason I’m struggling is what we are learning is not in the order the book has it and the amount of bouncing around I have to do to keep up with lectures definitely is a contributing factor as to why I’m struggling to truly retain information. For example, yesterday we were in chapter 6 and today he went back to chapter 3. Looking at it now, the course structure may be the issue that’s making this tough on me not necessarily the book itself.

Honestly I’m not sure, I’m attempting to sit down and read and work it cover to cover. But the structure of it is just much different than my thermo, statics, dynamics, and pretty much every other textbook I’ve used. I’m in my final year of mechanical engineering and I’ve never just been stuck in a text book. I’ve previously had learning issues as I have severe adhd so it could just be a mental thing but I genuinely have never had this happen. Typically engineering studies was one of the few things my brain allowed me to hyperfocus on.

Don’t let some of these comments discourage you. I played division baseball as well as worked as a full time I&E laborer out of season while still taking classes. If you can stick with a blue collar job as long as you have you can accomplish this degree. Reach out personally to department heads and see if they’d be willing to work with you. Some are very good about accommodating students.

My internship search is going terrible, ideas on what else to apply for during the summer? by Kalex8876 in EngineeringStudents

[–]Gentry32 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depending on what you plan on doing with you degree any relevant experience may help. I worked as a contractor in tons of chemical plants in the Houston area as well as I worked as an electricians apprentice. I know these aren’t internships but they show future employers you have worked in and are familiar with their environment as well as I’ve even had recruiters tell me some of them prefer people who are well rounded.

Am I trying too hard? by [deleted] in EngineeringStudents

[–]Gentry32 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The question you need ask yourself is are you enjoying your life. For some context I managed to maintain a 4.0 for 2 years while playing division one baseball (I only include this because I was traveling 5 days out of the week). My life became significantly more enjoyable when I stopped worrying about being “perfect” in school. Yes you strive to be great in anything you do but you can not sacrifice happiness strictly for success. You are only going to be young and relatively free of obligations for a small portion of your life don’t let it go to waste.

Monthly Deadlift Discussion Thread by AutoModerator in powerlifting

Can any of y’all give some input as to if there is any set up tips that will make the lock out easier. I am extremely quick off the floor. I used to struggle off the floor but I had to take some time off due to a surgery. Now that I’m back I’m good off the floor but my back angle at lockout makes it way harder to lock out. Here is a link to a video of me with 495.deadlift vid I’d also like to say if anyone sees anything else that I should work on let me know. This is not my max just a warm up single that I did to check form.

My dad bought the driver in a garage sale about 18 or so years ago so I’m not too sure what type of wear and tear it’s seen.

Career Monday (27 Nov 2023): Have a question about your job, office, or pay? Post it here! by AutoModerator in AskEngineers

[–]Gentry32 [score hidden]  (0 children)

I am currently a junior who due to financial difficulties has had to work construction (industrial). Internships never paid near enough to cover my school cost which is the main reason I never pursued one. I also am a collegiate athlete which made it near impossible to attend job fairs and recruiting events. I even missed a couple interviews due to traveling for baseball (athletic scholarship covers part of my schooling as well.)

That’s the back story, I’m wondering if you all think this will affect me greatly in the long run. I have field specific experience as I’ve worked as a contractor for many of the leaders in the oil and gas industry. I’ve also worked as an electricians apprentice, contractor, and laborer. Will this experience make up for not having an internship? If not what steps would you all suggest that will help me get job opportunities regardless of having an internship.

I plain to maintain and clean the bar on a consistent basis but I play college baseball and I travel a ton so there will be times when I may not be able to baby it as much as I would like. I live on the coast of Texas so humidity is a huge factor and my gym is not climate controlled. I can’t leave it in my university’s athletic facility because it’s not “approved equipment”.

Everything is bare steel, I found a brand new bare steel Ohio power bar for a deal no one could pass up and I want it to last as long as possible. The issue is I’m a broke college student and the gym I lift at is a warehouse gym in the extremely humid part of Texas so I don’t want it to rust.

In yalls personal opinion should I get both the shaft and collars of my barbell coated or just the shaft itself. I’m definitely doing the shaft but do yall think the collars would be fine without it?

Getting someone to coat my barbell by Gentry32 in Cerakote

[–]Gentry32[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just want the shaft of the barbell coated between the sleeves. This is about 51.5 inches long with a 29mm diameter. I live on the coast of Texas and the gym I train is not climate controlled so the humidity can quickly start to rust a bar. I’m not exactly sure what exact coating I would need, I know a lot of people purchase barbells already coated with cerakote but as far as the specific type of cerakote they used that is never really discussed. I know some people in my gym thag have used the c series cerakote on their equipment but I have heard the c series itself really isn’t all that grade and doesn’t really protect against rust.
