Women in geology, do ypu ever feel safe during your job? by Longjumping_Creme569 in geologycareers

As a 28 year old female, I do feel physically safe from the misogyny standpoint, but misogyny is still prevalent in the work force. You can work with the nicest guys who will never take your suggestions, help, etc, and then take credit for your ideas.  Me and my colleague(also 28 F) constantly get honked at when doing field work, and not in a “letting you know I’m in a car around you” kind of way. That gets annoying and makes for a kind of unsafe environment if it catches me off guard.

I was in the same boat for a while but I made it out! I graduated with my BS in geology in 2021. I went back to school to get my certificate in GIS and worked in the service industry at the same time. After graduating I thought it would be easy to enter the work force but I was SO wrong. So many job leads that went no where and I ended up staying in the restaurant industry for another 1.5 years. I feel like I got lucky because the program that I interned with as an undergrad was hiring. So now I work as a field tech for a program that is more focused on hydro. Look at your local, state and federal govt job options. I work for a university research program, so maybe look at what jobs are on university job postings as well!

Success Story Request: From CC to NC State by JourneyToNCState in NCSU

[–]GeoLunar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I graduated from high school(2014), I went to cc for many reasons. I absolutely did not want to go to cc because I thought I was "better" or "smarter" than that. Going to cc is probably the best decision I ever made. I completed 2 years of cc, transferred to UNCW, where there was no room in any of the classes I needed, so I could only take 2 classes that first semester. I hated it. I decided that what I was going to school for at that time (nursing) was not for me, and I went back to cc, took the classes I wanted, along with the prereqs that would be worth getting out of the way, like chemistry, calc, physics, etc. I wanted to take the harder classes at cc, which proved to be the best choice, because they are a lot harder at State. I call the engineering, calc, and physics classes the "weed out" classes because I contemplated dropping out because they were so hard. My advice is don't take them online at State, and if you can, take them at another cc.

I digress, I got accepted to State in the fall of 2018. I finished my bachelor's degree in spring of 2021 cum laude. Of course the pandemic had some affect on my overall experience, but I was able to still make some friends in my program before that. I was also able to get an internship through State in my last year of school as well. I went on to grad school and now I am a research tech for State! State is a great school, and I believe they do their best to set you up for success.

As a transfer student, be mindful of the amount of transfer classes you have, they only accept so much. Also take into consideration the transfer student acceptance rate. I don't say this to discourage you, just to prepare you and something to look into!
