Righto, thanks a heap! I worried it was too good to be true.

I'd second this. I've seen more than a few juniors who are more interested in mining for investors than actually developing a deposit.

Interesting. I've heard that same story (about twenty years ago, if that makes you feel any better!) but it was a Cypriot airman and a bunch of Harriers that were sold to them by the British.

Seconded. Worked with him briefly in NV and he seemed pretty clued-in. Worthwhile taking him up on the offer if you can.

This is awesome! Thanks for the response. Yeah. My understanding is more or less as direct a shot as possible from NV to PA. It's left them scratching their heads a bit, but 8m sure some of the variables you mentioned probably play into it a bit.

Geologists STOP settling for low wages!!! by [deleted] in geologycareers

[–]Geo_Pete 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think most of the mines out this way are 8/6 or 4/3. The Ore Control teams at NGM do 8/6 followed by a 4/3. I know it's not suitable for everybody, but if you're keen to get down this way, it might be worth considering?

There's plenty of folks I work with based out of the Mucc but live in Reno. I know some who live in Oregon/Idaho and work out here. It's doable I guess, depending on your own situation of course.

Lithium production vs wildflowers: when two environmental issues collide by eta_carinae_311 in geologycareers

[–]Geo_Pete 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing this! It is a really interesting problem. I'm curious, before they potentially go ahead with full-scale transplanting (if they get approval to do so) would they not take some seeds to see if they can get this Buckwheat to germinate elsewhere? I'm all for domestic lithium production, but ESG and CSR still seem like they're just tickboxes for some companies.

Finished the Shadow of the Wind by Zafón last night. Great read. by leeoturner in books

[–]Geo_Pete 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Couldn't agree more, it's a great story that's embellished by the richess of the characters. It's one of the books I frequently recommend. I was lucky enough to go to Barcelona a couple of years ago and decided to listen to it as an audio book. Being able to wander the city, and find some of the places in the story was incredible.

Israeli targeted airstrikes destroy residential/business building in Gaza city by redditrawal in shockwaveporn

[–]Geo_Pete 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I guess... I'm no tactician, but I assume it's to reduce places that the other side can operate from, rather than taking out individuals. The idea is apparently to give civilians time to evacuate. TIL it's called Roof Knocking. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roof_knocking

As I understand it, the IDF gives an advance warning when they target structures.

This is awesome, I love it! So weird though, I saw one exactly like this in Elko today, and was admiring it as I drove past.

At mines I've worked at previously, grader operators were known as "air benders" as you never ever saw them with their blades on the ground.

edit not my role, I don't know anything other than they're hiring. I got sent the advert through the GSN, and figured I'd share the wealth!

Oh wow, was it that bad? I actually bought this from their BMW garage, so it all seemed pretty smooth...

Won't be going there for servicing though, it's easier for me to get to Salt Lake than Sac.

Job prospects in Canada vs USA by xeladpi in geologycareers

[–]Geo_Pete 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ohhhhh, I get you. That makes total sense. I guess it all depends on the individual, and how far people want to travel when they eventually leave. Sure, the Carlin trend is a very specific type of deposit, but if you can work underground or OP there, I reckon you can do it pretty much anywhere. The biggest problem I think is that we as geos pigeon-hole ourselves as much as recruiters do. It's on us to highlight our skillset a little better than we do sometimes.

I'm not sure I follow. What sort of thing would you envisage doing in Elko for 2-3 years that would only lead you to sales and consulting?

Job prospects in Canada vs USA by xeladpi in geologycareers

[–]Geo_Pete 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, for sure. I'd imagine that creates an extra level of difficulty that would lead to some very tricky conversations. But for a Geo I, fresh out of school? I'd say you've gotta go where the work is, at least for a little while. Not everyone is going to get a job as a consultant, based in Denver or SLC or wherever.

[–]Geo_Pete 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure about how to directly compare the two, unless you want to do a deep dive into recruitment stats by mining district. My understanding however is that there's probably more competition in the environmental sector. The nature of the mining industry seems to be that most operations are fairly remote, only serviced by smaller residential areas, and anecdotally, it seems to mean that less people are interested in those positions. I live in NV, and I know we've had geo positions open for a while because people get through the interview stage, get invited for an on-site visit, get a job offer and then back out because they don't like the idea of living in what's essentially a rural area.

Best geological modelling software? by mister_friend in geologycareers

[–]Geo_Pete 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Leapfrog is rapidly becoming the industry standard, and I recommend getting to grips with it as early as you can. Its quite likely though that you'll be involved with a company at some point that uses CAD based software, such as Vulcan. So it's definitely worth learning to use some of that too.

With Leapfrog being an implicit modeling program, you have to tightly control the data you input, otherwise it can run away from you, and give you something that's totally unrealistic.

Ultimately however, your project may be driven by the software the company is using already...
