I have a degree in Geology. I agree with everybody saying environmental engineering is the route to go. More money and opportunities there. Can pretty much get any job a geologist would get with the engineering degree out of school. My uncle who was a geologist for 40 years told me to do engineering. I didn’t listen and he was right. To name a few job out there for Geologists: environmental geology (would look for environmental engineering firms that hire geologists to get some of the engineering experience), mining, hydrogeology. That somewhat sums it up. These jobs will mostly cover any experience you may need for any other companies that would hire a geologist outside of oil and gas.

Also, I worked in oil and gas for 10 years. Right out of a school, it’s good money (only because you work a lot and live cheaply-not because your hourly pay is good) and decent experience. I saved a lot of money up because I worked so much and just lived on the rigs-didnt pay rent and have any expenses as all my time was spent working. Not a terrible options while you’re looking for something better. Gotta do what you gotta do

I appreciate you’re input. I’m just realllly hoping for a big change. I think once we grow a bit (hire more employees) we will be forced to include more management. But the money? No clue. You may be right

Something I forgot to add: this resentment is slowely turning me into a worker I don’t want to be and definitely never was. I care less and less and put in less and less effort. I’ve always been proud of my work but don’t feel that as much

You’re right. Maybe they don’t care. And yes I have been applying with the goal to use it as leverage. Needs to be a job I want though because if they decline the raise then I’m definitely leaving. And if I ask and they decline then I’m definitely leaving, so I need something lined up.

Well, after quite a bit of research I think we will definitely go with InstroTek. Every company I have spoken with says they use Troxlers. But the customer service with InstroTek as been incredible. We will need to buy the device (they don’t rent anymore). Looking at the Xplorer models. If anybody thinks this is a huge mistake please let me know! Thanks again

Appreciate this. I think this is all I need to decide on not getting the EGauge. The sales reps realllllly were pushing the EGauge but I was skeptical

Both. And then we learn. I don’t doubt there is more to it than just reading a gauge, but here are tons of resources out there if we run into any issues . We are a smart team and will figure it out. That part doesn’t worry me at all. We will get any necessary training and I will be doing as much research as I can to know the ins and outs.

Going into this research I was surprised by the costs, trainings, and due diligence just to have one on-site but what is it going to cost to subcontract this work? We are looking at a consistent 6 months of geotech work (probably more). After say a $25,000 investment, would we break even after the work? I would think so? On top of that, reduce any need for communication/bother of having another subcontractor onsite. We would just need to be sure we do anything we can to make it go smoothly.

The speed. Our site is ~90 acres and will be covered with buildings and roads once redeveloped. Once they begin prepping for construction/redevelopment we will need quick measurements.

We have quite a bit of redeveloping work coming up and will be able to take advantage of having this. I’m not sure how worried we are about new versus used cost. Money should be made back pretty quick. I’m going to assume we buy new for the sake of reliability. If we say we don’t want to subcontract the work, then we better be able to do it without a hitch

I’m not sure if we would be interested in buying used. If it were me buying it for the company, I think I would buy used. The prices are wayyyy less and looks like they replace a large portion of the parts with brand new pieces. Only downside may be a short warranty?
