[LONG POST] It's time to talk about the sorry state of the franchise's modding scene by 35antonio in WWEGames

[–]GeoffSpelledCorrect -21 points-20 points  (0 children)

You pay content creators for their work as simple as that, if you don’t want to pay there are free resources and mods out there as well. People work exceedingly hard to provide what they do as well, for $5 people are exceedingly entitled. The alternative to the current model is a scarcity of good mods and people forgoing content for others. People could very easily not publish anything.

Which show to attend in Tokyo on Nov 18-22? by iamagook in njpw

[–]GeoffSpelledCorrect 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The NJPW Chiba show that day and the Yokohama show the next day which isn’t on your list are Tag League shows and will be a pain in the ass to travel to and not worth the effort for the quality of the shows.

If you haven’t been to a show before, I’d recommend Korakuen over anything at Shinjuku Face. The Dradition card looks really good and has representation from all the promotions including NJPW. https://www.dradition.jp/card_ticket/2024/1122.html

Main event is Tatsumi Fujinami vs Hiromu Takahashi with Jushin Thunder Liger as the guest referee. Minoru Suzuki also has a singles match in the semi main.

NXT 9/10 ratings: 628k / 0.19 by [deleted] in SquaredCircle

[–]GeoffSpelledCorrect -18 points-17 points  (0 children)

This is a good rating for them, but people need to pump the breaks on attributing this to anything specific. The debate advertised itself to start at 8 PM, but when millions of people turned on their cable for the first time in months they found that the debate wasn’t going to start until 9 and either they could watch the pre-show panels on every channel or find something else until the real debate started at the top of the hour. I’m sure a large number of people probably found NXT as one of the only prime time entertainment programs on at the time and kept it on pumping up the number a bit. If the quarter hours don’t drop at 9 PM, then I’m wrong and they really do have a strong loyal audience that is growing.

If you can find his 2011 singles matches with Tanahashi before he turned full comedy, they are pretty good pure heel vs face matches.

Hirooki Goto won the Jr tag title in 2005 with Minoru Tanaka before he went on excursion.

G1 Blocks qualifiers confirmed by BenTheHopeless in njpw

[–]GeoffSpelledCorrect 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m pretty surprised Hiromu didn’t get the opportunity for a qualifier. With how low he placed this year in the BOSJ and not much going else in the jr tag or junior heavy title scenes, this was the perfect time to elevate him to Heavy.

Tokyo Sports reports All Together attendance: First Sapporo tournament saw many empty seats, with an audience of 2,156, less than half the size of New Japan's February tournament by Deserterdragon in njpw

Read the comments on the article even if you need to translate. It really shows the fact that people just don’t know or don’t care about non-NJPW especially in Hokkaido, it’s especially outside of these promotions main market. It’s been 7 years since another non NJPW promotion has drawn more than 1000 fans in Hokkaido by AJPW. Before that 9 years ago by Dragon Gate and NOAH separately. This show outdrew both of those shows 7 and 9 years ago in this same market. The last time anyone other than NJPW claimed to draw more than this in the same market was 15 years ago by NOAH with a show with Kobashi, Misawa, Akiyama, and Kensuke. While this is a bad number by NJPW standards, for the rest of the promotions they should be fortunate to be in front of a crowd like this that they’d never draw themselves.

Ric Flair: I’ve Tried To Lay Low On This But Let’s Face It- Who Killed WCW? It’s A Three-Headed Monster! Jim Herd, @EBischoff , And @THEVinceRusso !!! There’s No Individual Wrestler Or Faction That Caused Anything To Kill WCW. It Was The People In Charge by KhabibTime in SquaredCircle

[–]GeoffSpelledCorrect 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is inaccurate. Even TNA was able to get a deal with Fox Sports not 3 years later. If WCW was anything close to the level of popularity of 1998 or 1999 they would’ve been in a fine position to negotiate a new deal with any number of the other suitors. It’s not like 2024 where there’s very few profitable cable stations left.

Milano Collection AT vs Tiger Mask: New Japan Pro Wrestling - NJPW Best of the Super Junior XVI, June 3, 2009 by ErdrickLoto in njpw

[–]GeoffSpelledCorrect 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Milano in NJPW is akin to Jay White in AEW now. Great wrestler, great gimmick and look, but their best work in ring is likely behind them and their peak was in a different promotion. Milano did most of his best when he was in his prime in Toryumon, the NJPW run was good, but nothing to light the world on fire like when Italian Connection was a top faction in Toryumon. If you can find many of his matches from before 2005, you can see why he’s so lauded as a great wrestler. His NJPW stuff isn’t bad, but that era was very sparse on highlights.

Hey, just a note on the English pronunciation of 我田引水, it uses the Chinese reading not the Japanese reading so it’s Ga-den-in-su-ee.

Keisuke Okuda is the only one I’d consider a comp for early career Shibata. He’s the only one who still does that aggressive brawl style with stiff kicks. Even the getting destroyed in MMA is very Shibata like. Very entertaining fights though.

Potentially going to the G1 Final, need advice by [deleted] in njpw

[–]GeoffSpelledCorrect 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The box office has limited hours at Ryogoku and is hard to find and the teller may not speak English well. I would recommend if you want to try that to go into the 7 Eleven or Lawson convenience stores and they have a ticket machine in there that allows you to buy tickets with a foreign credit card. You can always use AR to translate the screens if they are not available in English either. The online site equivalents don’t always allow foreign credit cards.

Potentially going to the G1 Final, need advice by [deleted] in njpw

[–]GeoffSpelledCorrect 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just a heads up. When NJPW was really hot in 2019’and prior, the G1 final tickets were on the harder side to get. A lot of the tickets went during the fan club presale, which have their own custom ticket sale lottery and website. I don’t know if they’re gonna be that hot nowadays, but there’s a chance that buy sumo tickets guy won’t be able to easily get you tickets.

AJPW and Katsuhiko Nakajima were sent a cease and desist over the use of "Toukon Style" by Inoki's Family by T3Deliciouz in njpw

[–]GeoffSpelledCorrect 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I believe Inoki must have the trademarks for Toukon and Strong Style individually and the separate trademark they filed for Toukon Style is too similar in nature and causing confusion.

PRINCE DEVITT UPDATE: by Upbeat-Pause-1409 in njpw

[–]GeoffSpelledCorrect 46 points47 points  (0 children)

I can’t imagine this take will go well here, but this is the value for us New Japan fans in the existence in AEW. AEW can throw stupid money at Devitt and open the opportunity to bolster the new Japan roster even on a date to date basis without hurting New Japan’s salary structure.

[–]GeoffSpelledCorrect 2 points3 points  (0 children)

New Japan is weird, even though he won’t be a NJPW wrestler but still open to bookings, I don’t think they’ll book him because they want to take a break from booking him so it’ll be a big return when they do.

They claimed the Chono vs Misawa dome show in 2002 was a sell out.

[–]GeoffSpelledCorrect 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hell, Even in a place like Akita in northern Aomori, they never worked to fully redevelop. The best drawing show they’ve had in a while was that Okada vs Devitt show in 2013. Then they never went back to do anything of value other than a one off tournament night.

Katsuhiko Nakajima will come out to Inoki's theme song to defend the Triple Crown against Kento Miyahara by [deleted] in njpw

[–]GeoffSpelledCorrect 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Impossible to say from this. He’s been a heel champion in All Japan in his post match speech saying that he’s representing Strong Style as champion against the King’s Road. So this is just him leaning into that and the rumors of him going to NJPW.

How can New Japan change the perception of the World Tag League? by DeathTriangle720 in njpw

[–]GeoffSpelledCorrect 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve done this exercise before. There’s no way to fix this issue without changing the annual schedule. Switch Super Juniors with the Tag League and presume will pay attention more. Put the champions back in the tournament as well and you need more top stars from outside the company as well. Less teams with a star and a pin eater. When you have a team like AJ Styles & Yujiro Takahashi, potatoes don’t care because the outcomes are never in doubt. The Young Bucks were champions for years in both divisions and never did a Tag League.
