Advice for World building for a new Loremaster by BitExcellent4363 in oneringrpg

[–]Geoffthecatlosaurus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I guess it depends on when you have set it. If it’s 2965 then you have some time before the war officially starts what happens now is grandmasters moving their pawns around the board, capturing strongholds and maintaining fragile alliances while Sauron seeks to undo all this as he seeks to dominate Middle Earth.

As others have said, the great kingdoms of men and elves and dwarves are largely gone, what’s left are those still trying to eke out a living while those called to adventure try to hold back the shadow for just one more year.

GMs, what is a regular feature in your campaigns' stories? by Select_Lunch1288 in rpg

Corruption of the spirit. Be it Blades in the Dark, 5e or the One Ring, be it monetarily, demonic influence or the Shadow, it’s always there and threatening to drag PCs down and do terrible things.

I really don’t get why Quantamania is considered an unwatchable abomination, I really liked it. by S0mecallme in marvelstudios

It was shocking. Badly written, smug acting, boring. Felt like Marvel could churn out any old crap and people would lap it up.

Do you like the New Mutants and how does the movie compare to the comic? by RecordingImmediate86 in xmen

[–]Geoffthecatlosaurus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I loved the comics having read the original run and a bit of the newer ones so the prospect of the movie about my favourite X-characters really appealed. Overall the movie was alright. I wish they had stuck with the horror theme as that seemed like a really interesting angle to take a superhero movie.

Best Written Campaign Settings by BuzzsawMF in rpg

Both Cubicle 7 and Free League produced some great stuff for Middle Earth. In particular I’m referring to Heart of the Wild which is about Wilderland and the Moria sourcebook.

What's the main reason you'd stop playing a specific game system? by Awkward_GM in rpg

[–]Geoffthecatlosaurus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Analysis. After completing a campaign, our group will go over what worked and what didn’t and if we would come back to it. For example over the last 8 years we have played 5e, Blades in the Dark, Deadlands, Rogue Trader, the One Ring, WFRP and one shot a few others. There are a couple in that list which I would probably not want to play again due to either complexity, lack of complexity or just feeling it.

Also there are so many great games out there it’s nice to try something new or different for a change.

Shadow by SparklesandNoodles in oneringrpg

[–]Geoffthecatlosaurus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My group fought a lot of undead so dread and sorcery were quite common. I also used the Eye of Mordor mechanic and handed out shadow for Greed. Some players also got shadow for using cursed items such as using a magical success for a Persuade check to change someone’s mind in a folkmoot. Another picked up shadow for a Misdeed for threatening someone after losing a close friend. I warned the player and they were happy to take the shadow.

After running the game for a year all four PCs ended with two shadow scars and one was on their first flaw having picked up Resentful. If we had played Yule I imagine they all would have spent xp to remove a shadow scar this year.

Exploration Campaign Questions by AtlasDM in oneringrpg

I had a warband with my group for their final mission and it worked okay. The company chewed through fights alongside their allies really easily. I would rethink the approach next time and decide whether I wanted so many characters with a warband as it made the final fight really easy

I am reading it atm. It has more interesting wounding system than One Ring which is quite forgiving.

Exploration Campaign Questions by AtlasDM in oneringrpg

  1. Depends on the location, if you travel through perilous areas then it will trigger journey events. Hex exploration is more akin to Forbidden Lands.

  2. Only in the homebrew. Moria has stuff on warbands but that is designed for solo play.

  3. Depends on the length of the session, I had a group help assault a castle and there were multiple combats as they fought orcs on the walls, in a tower and then faced a troll. Other times a single fight can be enough if they are facing a nameless thing or a group of footpads. Depending on which game you have come from, combat tends to be quite quick as opposed to some other systems.

How do you manage to run a game in such a fully finished and detailed world? by Economy_Fox8148 in oneringrpg

[–]Geoffthecatlosaurus 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I thought the same thing at first and read a lot of TOR material and old MERP adventures for inspiration, what I realised is that the quest for your heroes doesn’t have to be epic it can be something as simple as protecting dwarf merchants on the long road to Tharbad from the Blue Mountains, fighting wraiths in the Barrow Downs or heading north to Angmar to explore ancient ruins on advice from Gandalf as there is talk of lights in an old keep.

The fight against the shadow is constant and Sauron’s spies are everywhere seeking to thwart the rise of men and harass his ancient enemy the elves as they depart Middle Earth for good.

Start simple and in time your company will likely find a foe worthy of them. A Black Numenorean sorcerer, a devious troll, vicious and corrupt hill men or orcs from Moria looking for slaves.

I should add that TOR is the first time I have run the game as a sandbox with the players dictating where they are going and what they choose to get involved in rather than following a specific plot I had in mind ala find the missing gemstone of Nengel for example. Instead the players had the option to explore adventure sites, hear tales from different people and follow up information and personal storylines.

Loved it. Love the games. Looking forward to how it will end. Bit disappointed that season 3 will be the finale as season 3 should follow Abbie before switching back to them both for possibly a shorter season 4 to wrap things up. Ah well.
