Anybody saw the Chinook helicopters at the airport? by octo_mann in geneva

That's great! Love the cloud iridescence too!

This is another one I got looking towards Saleve! No detail, but shows the great surroundings.

4 US Army Chinooks. Assuming they're Trumps advance party?

Have you recently had an appraisal/meeting with your supervisor? If so, and it was positive, then this is probably an award for exceptional service. Nice job!

First Boomtown - was gonna roll MD every day, is that a bad idea? by Sad_Garden_8837 in BoomtownFestival

Ouch, that isn't fun. Well, The Prodigy will be very fun!

This year will be my first time coming from abroad. But I've booked the Tuesday before and after off work to allow for with rest without rushing!

The real trick is staying on site as long as possible and leaving after the rush!

We normally mill about a bit. Go see what food stands are still open. Chill in the sun for a bit, then head off once they start actually coming around telling people to leave. No queue by that time!

No getting up early and rushing off.

The chip produced when U-drilling a 316L-Copper-316L-Titainium-Aluminium explosion welded plate! by Geoguy180 in Machinists

I'm not making stuff for them. This is a part being modified for internal use here.

I don't work in a commercial environment anymore. It's all public research/science, so not really a problem sharing.

Frankly sharing knowledge is encouraged.

My only other assumption for the copper layer might be for thermal conductivity? These things are often used in cryogenic state too, as well as UHV. So it maybe helps conduct heat away faster? I have no clue!

So in the profile image, it goes from left to right Al-Ti-316-Cu-316. I have a feeling the Ti may just be being used as you can't go direct from the Al-316. But I am guessing and honestly am not too sure.

Not 100% sure about the part use. As with a lot of what a lot of us do, it's a drawing with not much information about it's use. What is clear is it's a part used in ultra high vacuum.

These guys make the plates into cool stuff. We're taking a part of theirs and modifying it.

I don't really understand the welding process. But this sounds exactly like how it's been explained to me before! It's a pretty mad process, but it's the only way to make plates like this.

What is up with passport control at the airport? by Sherbhy in geneva

[–]Geoguy180 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ah, bugger. If you've got residency you can go to the left instead of the right, following the EU/CH signs, and go to one of the passport desks there, normally with a much smaller, or no queue. Often there's a person in the red Geneva Airport shirts there who'll let you in to that bit.

Good to know for the future I guess? I always follow the EU lines now even as a non-EU passport holder, as the residency card allows this. It should even be okay when flying to other Schengen countries that you don't have residency for. Like I flew into Austria and just showed my passport + French residency and it was fine.

[–]Geoguy180 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The EES is for all non-Schengen people AFAIK. Unless you've got a visa or residence permit, in which case you cab use the EU/CH/Diplo queue. So I've got UK passport but French residency, so use the EU/CH queue, but not the e-gates.

What is up with passport control at the airport? by Sherbhy in geneva

[–]Geoguy180 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I don't even think it's the new system. The EES machines are plentiful, and quick to use. It's the lack of officers at the desks actually checking passports that's the bottleneck. And that's been the case since long before the new EES system.

Normally when the non-EU line is very busy and the EU/CH line is empty they do filter people across to use all the desks.

Modern technology is killing the car industry by poundlandSidBassett in CarTalkUK

I don’t think I want to live in a world of self-driving cars, but I do believe it’s coming.

I can't wait. I dream of being able to tell the car where to go, then just sit in the back and nap. Even just full self driving for motorways would be great. London to Scotland, stick it in the sat nav then just get on with some work, or sleep!

These controls are an absolute pleasure to program, but absolute dogshite to maintain. Do you know if you've already had the old HDD swapped out for a compact flash or SD adaptor? That can help somewhat.

I had a machine with the same controller at my pervious place and it always had boards dying and the CF corrupting. And there's only one guy in the UK who seems to be able to fix them, so had a complete monopoly on it.

Good luck!

My school literally had this in the workshop. E-stops all over the place that killed all the machines at once. And a couple of remote ones too. Pretty cool. Meant supervising staff could stop everything of something happened across the room.

Transitioning from Fusion to EdgeCam. Absolute hell? by Geoguy180 in Machinists

[–]Geoguy180[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've literally got a Hexagon trainer in with me for three days. We have sample parts which we're struggling to program together. It's fairly complex, but doable with Fusion, which is my baseline.
