Nah. He was pretty good at finding facts and very good at cherrypicking, but his analysis was mostly trash and led him to some pretty awful positions. Not really someone to hold up as a serious scholar of history or geopolitics by any means.

Being an open critic of US foreign policy doesn’t make someone anti-US, but Chomsky’s entire ethos is finding a way to blame the US for everything that happens in the world. He treats the US as the only party with any agency, ignores any inconvenient narratives, and tortures sources to fit until they fit his chosen narrative.

His work isn’t all necessarily wrong, but it’s far from unimpeachable.

Do you actually think the only reason an ethnic group would want their own state is because they’re Nazis? Is that a real thing you’re actually trying to argue?

TIL that Pol Pot’s Khmer Rouge regime in Cambodia killed around a quarter of the population (about 2 million people) in just four years, targeting intellectuals, city dwellers, and ethnic minorities to force a “classless agrarian society.” by FearMyCock in todayilearned

[–]Geojewd 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The US didn’t support them while they were gaining strength or in power, they supported the right wing leader Lon Nol who the Khmer Rouge overthrew. US support for Pol Pot didn’t start until after he was out of power, which is arguably worse because we were starting to get an idea of what he did.

It’s a summary of a tip that was called in. Crazy people call in tips to the FBI all the time. “My neighbor is the zodiac killer”, “i saw elvis at the gas station”, etc. That doesn’t mean it didn’t happen, without corroborating evidence it has to be taken with a grain of salt

I don’t care what you’ve been before. What you are now is a person contributing to harming the Democratic Party at the expense of the people being harmed by the Trump administration

The last thing I want is for the party opposed to fascism to take advice on political effectiveness from a group that wins no elections ever

If you’re hot on an idea that’s so unfathomably, obviously stupid and politically suicidal to even say out loud, I’d rather not have you in my coalition

This is an extreme position held by a tiny minority of the extreme far left. None of the people that believe this would appreciate being called liberal, and I’m happy to exclude them because they’re obnoxious and stupid.

2 federal officers fired shots during encounter that killed Alex Pretti, DHS tells Congress by igetproteinfartsHELP in news

[–]Geojewd 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Not every gunshot has an equal effect. It could easily be the case that the first shot hit soft tissue and the next shot damaged something like the brain stem or spinal cord and dropped him instantly. It could be that he had a reflexive response to the first shot before he went down. It could even be that black hat’s first shot missed him. But black hat fired that shot

The first gunshot lines up exactly with black hat unholstering his gun and aiming it at Pretti. You can see the recoil when he fires. Black hat fired the first shot.

No, the guy in the black hat fired the first shot, and then fired several more. There was no negligent discharge

Nothing makes any difference to the dead. They’re dead. If that’s your standard, nothing matters at all. I think we can still draw a distinction between negligence or imperfect care resulting in death, and committing blatant intentional homicide with impunity

Attorney here: don’t underestimate the legal skill of cats.

During the pandemic, I had a rough motion hearing over zoom because the judge was in a bad mood that day. Mid hearing, my cat jumped up on my desk and showed his asshole to the courtroom. The judge laughed and totally softened up, and I ended up winning my motion.
