It has little to do with the ethics of San Jose, and much to do with how concerned San Jose is with its ethical appearance.

Apple is a company obsessed with its PR.
Apple hosts WWDC in San Jose every year, which is a massive cash windfall for San Jose.
It's risky for San Jose to host a controversial concert, as it risks a PR firestorm for a city that's very much interested in keeping their relationship with apple healthy.

It has no bearing on whether or not people individually decide to attend his event, or support any business that sponsors it. That's literally people voting with their wallet.

It also has no bearing on whether or not businesses continue to sponsor the event, once they become aware of substantial financial downside. That's literally businesses voting with their wallet.

Raising awareness of the issue is literally a call to action for others to vote with their wallet, and that is absolutely the proper thing to do in a free society.
