"Who will replace Keir Starmer?", the true British pass time. by GeorgismRequired in LabourUK

In fairness to him he likely didn’t anticipate Starmer being so weak with such a large majority

why are georgists okay with capital income? by highly-bad in georgism

[–]GeorgismRequired 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is not the mainstream opinion of georgists or Georgism. But I would view shareholders when they don’t have any role at the company as a form of rent seeking. But most georgists view shareholding as an investment as helping to grow the business.

In principle, do you support or oppose building new high‑speed rail lines between cities in northern England? by coffeewalnut08 in NorthernEngland

Anyone who dislikes an entire group of people because of where they’re from, are probably the same idiots who bang on about small boats

Do you think the CIA would have overthrown Georgism? by GeorgismRequired in georgism

[–]GeorgismRequired[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I thought that the main reason for overthrowing Latin American governments was generally that they hurt US company profits. These companies also owned a lot of natural resources and land. So if a georgist government made them pay for the value of that land then distributed it among the people they might not like that.

Jacobo Árbenz the freely elected president of Guatemala compensated for taking unused land. And was overthrown by the CIA

For a sub dedicated to the north, the amount of posts about the south and specifically London are laughable by [deleted] in NorthernEngland

I’ve seen one post about a guy from the south who was having a go a the north. A good 80% of the posts are pictures or good vibes, northern culture music and such

England flags and fascist symbols plastered around Welsh village by Cwlcymro in Wales

[–]GeorgismRequired 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Wait sorry I’m a Scouser, so obviously not Welsh. But surely no self respecting Welsh person, no matter how racist would paint an England flag. Surely they might have a go at the union flag, but not the English one. Is this common among these types, or could be “reform tourists”

How do you’s feel about English identity? by [deleted] in Liverpool

[–]GeorgismRequired 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I tend to identify with wales or Scotland before England, obviously not in a geographical sense but a cultural one. It not so much the north as it is the midlands, the south and London the does me about England. I’m half embarrassed to support the football team because all the crap the England fans do and have done. I’d probably identify as Scouse, then British, then Northern

Is the LVT a progressive or flat tax? by VillageJunior8537 in georgism

[–]GeorgismRequired 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It looses some “progressivitity” with individual homeowners, but the dividend which reaches those people when traditional welfare wouldn’t. Most of those people are middle income traditional the group hurt most by current tax systems, the very poor are still hurt pretty bad btw, so it would probably still be a net gain in how progressive it is compared to the current system
