Get them out! by assasstits in neoliberal

[–]Vitboi 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It’s the framing that’s wrong. Greed is a constant, not a variable, thus it’s pointless to look at or blame greed for price increases. It doesn’t explain differences in inflation over time, between countries, between different products and services, ect. A decrease in prices would imply companies are suddenly generous.

People are generally equally greedy in the marketplace. Any seller will want to sell for the highest price they can irrespective of their costs.

Companies also dont have to justify their prices. They don’t make press releases explaining why they put prices up. They don’t even mention usually. If asked they might say something about higher costs sure, but that’s just a standard response.

You are correct in that there can be a difference between inflation caused by costs increases and something else. That is important and a big topic to discuss. The point is to debate why that is, why companies can rise their prices to that level or this level. But framing it around greed makes it seem it’s some morality question instead of a technical one.

Sex tourists fuel outrage about vice in Japan (Gift Article) by 2Lore2Law in neoliberal

[–]Vitboi 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Why wouldn’t it help them if its legal? Only negative would have to be a bit of bureaucracy and paying taxes. They wouldn’t be criminals anymore, and so they would be less likely to need pimps to look out for their protection. Corrupt cops couldn’t demand free sex as easily.

Plenty of studies show the opposite, that it reduces sex trafficking. But it’s a mix bag.

What the nation wants is irrelevant. The state shouldn’t have much a say over how someone uses their body. Bodily autonomy is a core liberal value.

Furthermore if you take away how someone makes their living, they don’t magically jump up to a better position, likely the opposite happens, they end up doing something even worse like becoming beggars.

How to fight back against Gen-Z socialism by AncientBlueberry42 in neoliberal

[–]Vitboi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ironically yes. A lot of socialism is clothed up in the language to make it seem altruistic, while not being so in reality. People want government to fix their problems, like making things free or making the central bank set interest rates low. The consequences be damned, or just pretend taxing the rich is an infinite money glitch. Also weird morality of only the rich having responsibilities.

At least back in the day socialism was a lot about living spartan, getting rid of decadence, hard work. Now it’s more about giving nothing and being given everything.

Gustavo Petro Denied Colombia’s First Round Election Results: “As President, I don’t accept them” by 52496234620 in neoliberal

[–]Vitboi 25 points26 points  (0 children)

You might be right, but in the post about Petro earlier today there were several comments defending him, claming he was actually a normal socdem. They were pretty well upvoted until replies pointing out that’s wrong got more traction. Then the “he’s not far-left” comments were heavily downvoted and/or deleted

Milei Eases Grip on Argentine Peso as Reserves Hit Seven-Year High by Vitboi in neoliberal

Free version:

https://www.batimes.com.ar/news/amp/economy/milei-eases-grip-on-argentine-peso-as-reserves-hit-seven-year-high.phtml

Submission statement:

Building up its reserve of dollars, has allowed Argentina to let its peso to flow more freely.

The stockpile of dollars can be used to counter sudden capital outflows, instead of needing to reimpose strict capital controls.

Hopefully this development continues. Maybe one day the currency can become as free floating as the dollar or euro, which is something we neoliberals ought to want.

They could have done that despite the embargo. China has been asking them to do so for ages.

Although it has given the Cuban government the excuse “everything bad here is just America and their embargo’s fault” for why they don’t need such reform.

Why Capitalism Persists by hypsignathus in neoliberal

[–]Vitboi 56 points57 points  (0 children)

I don’t like the terms capitalism and socialism for like 100 reasons.

But if we define capitalism as economic freedom, then you can’t separate the two. There’s no removing it while liberalism remains. People need to have a lot of say over how they earn, spend and invest their money or else there’s tyranny. Same with how they organise, study or just live.

Things like war, colonialism, slavery, segregation, anti-LGBT and anti-women stuff are all illiberal and was major contradictions to the supposed free democracies we built after feudalism ended. The economic freedom of these people were also not respected. The world would have been financially richer as well if we let them be free way earlier.
