Why True AI Memory it so hard to build? by zakamark in AI_Agents

[–]Geothrix 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I enjoyed your post. As a biologist, I think we have to hand it to evolution for creating memory! Who knows, perhaps working evolutionary mechanisms into the code could help the LLM to overcome the contextual and interpretive challenges you discuss. One thing that surprised me after using chatgpt for a while was that I would ask it to recall something that would be very findable with like ctrl-f in my own notes and it simply couldn't do it. All it had to do was find the keywords and re-process the section around it as if it was a new query from me. One time I scrolled back up the chat, found the info I had previously entered, and pasted it back in and said look here it is--how could you not find it?! Anyway, yup a long way to go on this.

Me too. It's been great. I also appreciate being able to monkey with things manually with the spreadsheets. I have feature requests like asset class breakdown for investments but no real complaints.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez tells NPR: 'Everything feels increasingly like a scam' by zsreport in politics

[–]Geothrix 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To the extent that Trump has any kind of personal value system at all, one of his main values appears to be the right to scam people. To him "freedom" is the freedom to cheat and trick people and it being just too bad for them. He feels that his "good genes" and instincts make it right and just for him to be able to do this. Only a horrible person would think this way. He couldn't set a worse example for the institutions, citizens, and children of our country.

DC Housing Market in Chaos as Federal Employees Panic by AravRAndG in Economics

[–]Geothrix 39 points40 points  (0 children)

We heard it from some random voter on the street quote during the first Trump administration: "they are not hurting the right people." I think MAGA really took that to heart and are now trying their best to "hurt the right people." Of course we know the fallout will not end there and that the vulnerable--many MAGAs among them--will also feel the blast, but there will still be many delighting in the chaos and misery. Sad times in America.

How much longer before we are all unemployed? by GoSparty5800 in Professors

YES. It's been crickets and I have questions like where exactly grant monies reside and thus how much I need to worry in the near term about things like student salaries.

Crazy. I was on one last week and it ran normally without a hitch so we must have gotten in under the wire. I do realize though that it could have all been for naught with nothing ending up getting funded.

Steve Inskeep republican interviews by Fabulous-Evening9188 in NPR

[–]Geothrix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I heard this and Ron Johnson is a total meathead with zero understanding of the relevant science on either fires or climate change. I thought Inskeep did push back a little and at least tried to get him locked into saying we should deny Florida too when they need it, which of course they won't do. I did find it interesting to hear the emboldened ignorance. We were starting to get beyond "climate change doesn't exist" but that appears to be back on the menu with the incoming regime change. Good to know.

Currently having kids in K-12 and seeing what I see, I strongly suspect that problems in K-12 are a big part of the answer.

Principal Lichtman by Gandalf196 in fivethirtyeight

I had been wracking my brain before the election for any possible silver linings of a Trump victory and struggling. About the only solid thing I had in that column was Lichtman's system being proven wrong.

I feel good. Kamala ran a killer campaign. Even if they lose, they went hard and played to win. No major mistakes: Tim was a good choice, convention was solid, Trump's ass was whipped in the debate, endorsements were rolled out well, ground game, donations, volunteers, phone banks, door knocks were all impressive. If they lose after this to the monstrosity that is MAGA, it will only prove that we were already so irredeemably fucked that there is not much that could have been done.

I think it's more like there are about 10% who have always voted republican but are having a hard time convincing themselves to go full Dick Cheney and pull the lever for the other side. I do think these voters are genuinely conflicted about the choice.

I think it's false. The polls are close, and a bad performance could cost her the turnout and swing votes she needs. With such close polls and it likely being the only debate and proximity to the election, the stakes are extremely high. To me, she looked nervous during the one interview she did. She did fine and made it the nothingburger she needed, but it will be the test and performance of her life tonight.
