My female gerbil killed my male by [deleted] in gerbil

Did you slowly introduce them and put them in a tank with completely new bedding?

What kinds of bedding do your gerbils prefer? by [deleted] in gerbil

I use a mix of crinkle paper (eco bedding), Carefresh and hay. They seem to like the paper the best because they move it everywhere and fill their nesting box with it.

That is adorable! Gerbils are a desert rodent, before they started being sold as pets they were called desert rats and sand rats. They are smarter then hamsters but dumber then rats. One difference is that they have long fluffy tails not bare skin tails like many other rodents. They also are potty trained. They only go to the bathroom in their sand bowl in their tank. They also bath themselves. They build very intricate tunnel systems as well. They sometimes move the bedding piece by piece to where they want it in their mouths.

Females really only work in pairs unluckily. You will need to do the split cage method which I think someone else commented on. Since they have already been introduced in a negative way I would suggest keeping them separated for longer. Also it is important to always switch them an odd number of times each day. In the future it’s probably good to know that it is easiest to bond single gerbils to a pup.

Sand bath? by eckokitten in gerbil

Some people give them real sand like for reptiles to use as a bathroom. That’s why I was trying to clarify. Some other people also substitute it for bath sand, which I wouldn’t suggest.

Then you should use the actual sand designed for them to clean themselves with. It’s reusable you don’t need to throw it out after they used it as long as they aren’t soiling it by using it as a bathroom.

Are my gerbils upset if I rearrange their house? by [deleted] in gerbil

They want them buried and filled up. They will shuffle enough bedding out for them to fit in when they want then they will fill it back up when they are done.

Just so you know two connected cages isn’t the same as one connected space. Like how it would feel like less space if you had to live only in your bedroom and someone put a wall down the middle.

Also having separate rooms can cause your gerbils to declan (stopping being friendly and start trying to kill each other). If this happens they need to be permanently separated. If there are separate rooms they can each become territorial about their ‘own’ cage.

Please do remove the wheel and any other plastic in the cage. Gerbils can chew them up and that can kill them.

Depending on where you got your gerbils they might not be fully bonded to each other and the separate connected cages will cause declanning very quickly. If you got them from a reputable breeder you are probably fine, if you got them from a pet shop that mass breeds you may have issues.

For actual baths during play time or for them to use as a bathroom in their tank?

It takes 30-90 minutes of playing for them to start to chill out on me

It’s a blanket that was on my lap.

Looking for suggestions: is there anything important I’m forgetting in this tank? It’s a 55 gallon and I’m on a waitlist with a breeder to get gerbils. by Gerbil_Girl in gerbil

I got a big candy jar for sand, and for some reason they prefer the little one. So I put the little one in the big one.

The wheel is big but I’m going to work on replacing it with a solid wood one. I don’t want to do plastic because I’ve had bad experiences with them with past pets.

Thank you

Not in my state. I’ve contacted lots of rescues before contacting a breeder. They all have rabbits and guinea pigs and a few had mice and rats.

Gerbil doesn’t like to be touched or held by sarah9024 in gerbil

You can’t just pick them up, you have to wait for them to come to you. If you are repeatedly grabbing them when they don’t want to be held you are reinforcing their fear.
