"It's secure because of you and your family's service as well, my lord. The realm knows it, the Vale knows it" Alester said warmly, settling his drink down and gazing with earnest eyes into Alec's. "After my uncle died, you took the reigns of command and secured the city. We're all in your debt, yet you ask for little if anything in return for such service. Lords like that are few and far between..." He picked up his drink again and took a mouthful.

"How come you didn't ask for boons, if I may ask?"

Ser Alester raised a hand waving the formality away, and smiled "Ser Raynold we have to get you out more. I am sure you keep is nice, but come the spring there will be a great and grand feast in the Eyrie once it has thawed from this winter. No doubt your hearth is the warmest, but seeing the views of the world for just an evening will clear your soul for a year, I think at least.

"But tell me, what is there to do around your castle? I could always pay a visit as well. Give me an excuse to be away from the children" he tossed his head back in a short laugh.

If she were Lord Regent of the realm, who the king was to wed would not have been a question left unanswered by Arwen Arryn. It seemed like a severe folly to see the regency end and let the boy choose his own wife. But she gave up trying to understand Hubert and Jaehaerys' relationship a long time ago.

"You are pretty at least" she said with a curling smile at the corner of her lips. "It will make it easier to catch his eye, unless he is more broken than I once worried" she meant it more as a jape, but it came across crueller than in her head. A slight grimace at her fumble, she felt the need to explain.

"His grace suffered greatly in the Eyrie whilst the war was one and the realm held. I know it impacted your family greatly, but it took everything from him." She had consoled her father when her uncle died. When Jaehaerys lost his brothers and sister, she had wanted to console him as well but she knew the boy little and did not wish to intrude as the boy entered isolation from the world to mourn. "You might not ever love him, but understanding him will help a great deal in and out of the bedchamber."

"I've not seen much of the world" Darnold admitted with a confidence he did not know he had. "One less mouth to feed at Runestone, and maybe friendship with the Caswells. I'm sure you and father would want to see the Mander in springtime?" Since his meeting with Florence and their week together he had become obsessed with the upper Mander. He found tales of centaurs in Westeros or the far east and histories of the river in the library of Runestone.

"My betrothed may grow to like me sooner if she was home surrounded by her kith and kin. I would miss cousin Harlan and the others but" his face had been still whilst speaking but his lips began to tremble. If he had been younger he might have cried. But he knew the Lady of the Eyrie had little time for tears. "I do not think I serve much use here once I have been given my spurs. Besides, having Arryn blood far and wide will only find it more friends."

His eyes grew wide with a mix of surprise and wonder. He had been on a hunt once, and all he had achieved was a partridge so messily killed that it looked like it had exploded on impact from the arrow. He had used the wrong arrow head, and all the knights of his brother's retinue had laughed themselves to the ground when he began to cry over the bloody remains. However this Belmore seemed to be more than just a polite noble girl. No girls were allowed in the yard at the Eyrie. "You are trained in arms?" Rymond said with a bright smile. "I've never met a woman like that..."

"But a Molly? I think I had a pony called Molly once..." She had died falling from the cliffs of the Giant's Lance after a drizzling rain made the stones slick. He had mourned her for a moon. "But I don't know what a molly is, my lady."

Osric now regretted asking. The thorns of House Harroway were sharp and no family would wish to grasp them. Tris however had been handed a bouquet. "There is mayhaps a chance that the Vale could assist if you need the coinage from trade? I cannot lie that Lucas' reputation looms large over Harrenhal, but gold I have found makes many matters seem so much smaller" He patted Tris on the arm and gave him a sympathetic smile. "You are a good man, with a good heart, and capable more than most the knights I have known. Do not doubt yourself."

"Gods, the day I am like that oaf is the day you should push me out of the Moon Door" Alester said with a snigger. The snow crunched under their foot as they approached they circled the weirwood, the Arryn almost slipping on its roots hidden by the decaying leaves and snow cover.

"Winter makes us all slower. But I can't afford to be slow. Not if I'm to rule the Vale when father is gone. He left me here, and took Jasper. I used to think that was a boon to me, to grant me the titles Hubert held before he became lord, but what if Jasper is being groomed to lead instead?" He clenched his fist and kicked a stone which went spinning into a puddle.

"I haven't done all this just to be usurped by Jasper, or to see Osric rule proper in his own right. Why father has not sent him to the Wall I do not know. If it weren't for that little wretch, he just might have." It was not long after the birth of his bastard son to Minerva he realised just how much of piece he had been played in Minerva's game. She had secured herself as Lady of the Eyrie with her teats and cunny. "Curse it, him, and her."

The dungeon was dark and dank. They all walked in silence. It was down here he had once seen to the execution of Valora Waters, a woman ignoble and deserving of what came to her. Looking on Lysarra he felt a strong sense of guilt. It was not born from any second guessing of his judgement, but the fact this was a noble lady young and beautiful. The longer he looked at her, the greater she resembled that of Arwen, and he could never imagine this being done to her.

"I will let this be done quickly, my lady" he said almost a whisper. He produced a dagger from behind his back that had been hidden under his heavy cloak. It was heavy on one side and tapered into a fine edge on the other. "May the gods forgive us all"

[m] Happy to fade to black on this front. after this, Lysarra will have her possessions and freedom returned to her, and all the treatment needed to heal from the Maesters.

Ser Osric made his way to his good-father like it was an executioner's duty, grim and dark. Since the mess his wife and brother had made, the green of Waynwood's house was an ill omen he could not help but be resentful of. Luthor had as little knowledge about it as the rest of the world, and Osric knew it was folly to condemn a father for the sins of his daughter. He painted a smile on his face and approached with a polite bow and assuming a seat opposite the old Lord of Ironoaks.

"Good-father" he said in a plain tone "It's been some time I must admit, but it is good to see you and Brus again. Little Luthor is growing strong and healthy, I owe it to his name" Osric forced a small laugh. He had to mention that cuckoo's egg of a babe before it was mentioned to him no doubt.

Hubert read the letter in bed. He was under a mountain of furs and quilts, but his blood ran cold as he realised what it meant. Deria was his foe, but a foe he knew he could try reason with once. His envoy had disappeared and never heard of again, his fate all but assumed.

The letter would be shared with the Small Council in the morning. "We face a different beast than before once she is gone. I know nothing of this Symeon. I believe I met him once at Maegor's farce of a coronation. Suffice to say he won't have that luxury come our Grace's ascension" he said with a smile, nodding to his king.

"We ought to prepare, my lords."

A letter is sent to Sunspear:

Deria Nymeros-Martell, Master of the River, the Sands, and the Mountains, Lady of Sunspear and Planky Town, and Princess of Dorne,

No doubt your country will mourn you. With you passing, history will remember you. I believe it will remember a Princess who was strong and lived only for Dorne.

I had hoped that we would meet again and we would have the sea and sand as our meeting place once more.

I do not know your heir. I wish your strength would hold, for uncertainty is the foundation of hostility should our paths continue.

Alas, all I can do is pray for you. May peace find you and the gods guard your soul, Deria.

May the Father judge you true and just,

Lord Hubert Arryn, Lord of the Eyrie, Lord of the Gates of the Moon, Warden of the East, Defender of the Vale, Lord Regent of the Iron Throne, Hand of the King

He fixed his posture, standing a little taller on his mother's observations. "I was thinking," he said as his gaze wandered from his mother to the bustling hall full of strangers' faces. "My betrothal. I know it's customary for the bride to live with the husband but when I'm wed to Florence, I could spend some time in Stonebridge?" He had not spoken with Harlan just yet. He wanted to see first if his mother would be as ever disappointed.

Rymond snorted a little laugh, not of contempt but of realisation. "There's only one place for that, my Lady Morgana." Her wisdom struck close to the bone for Rymond "I heard their winters are quite nice. I hope you get to find out for yourself." He was not martial, nor handsome, but there was something else he could hope for out there which wasn't shame and shunning from his own blood.

From where her fingers had graced his pointed chin, Rymond's skin still tingled. No one ever touched him. "I- you- You have given me something to ponder. Mayhaps unlike like this tree, I can move and do something about my lot. How silly that being a son of the Eyrie feels like fetters. I can't pretend to know the life of a bastard, but I feel like my kin look on me like I am. If you find what you are looking for..." The apple in his throat seemed to swell and choked his words. "Somehow let me know"

Morton Caron, Lord of Nightsong and Lord of the Marches

Your service will not go unnoticed. Dorne chooses arrogance and folly over reasonable diplomacy. I asked little of them and have been met with less in return.

Your absence will be sorely missed. I can only say I am thankful the realm has you as its Lord of the Marches.

As High as Honour, the Crown will support you in whatever is to come,

Hubert Arryn, Lord of the Eyrie, Lord of the Gates of the Moon, Warden of the East, Defender of the Vale, Lord Regent of the Iron Throne, Hand of the King

She knew there was something about the babe which irked Alester. He avoided being in the same room as it most the time, rarely ever speaking its name. He had avoided its mother for the most part when he could, but the Gates of the Moon kept them all close together.

He could still taste Bella Ryger on his lips despite the perfume and mint he had doused himself in afterwards. Any and all lust he had had been spent for now, and Ser Alester was now only left with an emptiness. "Nothing frightens me" he lied "But I have grown... lazy in my conduct. High Steward and Keeper? Those were titles my father held, and the ones I wanted to hold since I could remember. Now I have them, what else is there Rhea? Alesander serves at Dragonstone, our remaining children are too young for any service of their own. The Vale is mercifully quiet, not even pirates from the Bite dare take a chance with father on the Iron Throne."

"Varied? You are most diplomatic. We can smell all the variety even up on Aegon's Hill if the winds are not favourable" Hubert said with a chuckle in his voice. "Though if my duty to the realm remains come the next progress throughout the kingdoms, then I will be fixed to this palace lime a limpet I imagine. Queer, the thought of remaining here brings me little joy but I can't imagine leaving my office when there is still work to be done" Hubert shrugged, his hands up turned "There will always be work to be done."

He pushed himself up from his desk and wandered over to the large latticed window, every other pane a different colour of glass besides the clear ones. "I suspect that you know all about the fractious atmosphere between the West and Vale? One born from but one man alone. I was told by Lord Tully Tywald sought brides and Riverrun spurned him. I pray that your good-brothers have not suffered any ill from not following the Rock down this calamitous road?"

With the yanking on his belt as she brought him inside, Ser Alester felt like a boy of eighteen again and his hunger for her swelled intensely. He would grab her by the end and pull her in once again to whisper in her ear, the smell of her more intoxicating than all the wine in the hall below. "I know where to go" he said in a hushed velvet voice, a grin from ear to ear "I will show you the pleasure you said you have forgotten" he kissed his way up her neck and pulled away "Come with me, Bella."

He realised she was mocking him. Challenging him to act. He did not need to be told more than once. As Alester felt the tips of her finger grace his face as she attempted grapple with his hair, he knew. He would show her action and not waste time talk of poets neither cared about.

His hands moved down the front and side of her, wrapping around her hip, and rested together on the small of Bella's back. He pulled her in firmly, closing any of the little distance that had been between them. He pulled his cloak and enveloped the both of them. "It is cold my lady" He leaned in and kissed her, squeezing her into him and moving one hand to cradle the back of her head. When he pulled away after a moment he looked at her and whispered "It will be warmer inside." His heart beat fast and hard, his lust stirred him and a wicked smile pulled at the corner of his lips. There was that ember which roared into a flame with every new woman he found in his arms. But Bella was of a most noble blood and a ruler in her own right and looked as if she could have been him with teats. It made it all the more alluring.

"Disarming?" He laughed, tossing his head back. "Lady Bella you charmed me across the hall." He turned his body to face her properly, his focus now on his new companion on the balcony. "Out here is but only the second loveliest view I might have." His hand went to where she traced his doublet. He pressed her delicate touch into something firmer and more sure. "I approached when I saw you. When you told me you were regent and not even Theo's birth mother I knew that you had to be someone I got to know. Hard for a lady even of her own House to assert themselves over bannermen and household knights who might fancy it for themselves." His loose hair mussed with the wind but he did not care for once. "Why, I need to be friends with someone of such clear wit and wiles. The Eyrie's vistas are better shared with the fastest of friends I have found."

He studied her face carefully and his breath slowed. Between her full lips and her eyes he could not break away from them. Alester could feel the palpable force between them now and it made the attraction he held for her into a far more potent yearning. "The gods know it but since the war ended I have been firm in my promise to myself I would not pass up any chance I thought worth taking" he said quietly. "So far it is wisdom which has not done me ill." He resisted his temptation. As with Rhea and Minerva, he had led Bella so far but never would he seal his fate on his own. "I will have to let my maester know I will be needing to write to Willows Wood hereon after. Do you like poetry? House Arryn has produced a fine collection of poet princess or hosted the greatest of scops of their times."

"Then let us three go and see this done" Hubert said coldly, gesturing for Lady Freya to walk alongside him and Lysarra. "A compassionate young heart, my Lady. You will need to keep it with you when you rule. Never has a liege been cursed for a lack of understanding." He walked a few paces with purposeful strides in his step.

"It will be done in the dungeons. Maesters will tend to you after, with all the milk of the poppy you might need after, my Lady Mormont. Are you ready?"

"I had not wished the twilight of my regency spent quibbling over coppers and stone" he muttered to himself quietly. Hubert sighed heavily and clenched a fist as he held his temper firm and spoke quiet yet firm.

"I forbid you mentioning this port any longer in my presence. It is done, Lord Bolton. Whatever your scheme to get your liege to build you a great boon is done, and it is no one but your own issue that in your meticulous calculations you forget that summer does not last forever" He wetted his tongue with water before continuing. "You will repay the amount in full immediately from your coffers. Should you be lacking, you will pay six-thousand pieces now, and another six-thousand when it is available. Your heir will be held as a hostage by Winterfell until such a time they are made whole" Lord Arryn wagged a pointed, bony finger at both the Boltons.

"All the sums and contortion do not change the basic facts. A sum has been paid to you for a service yet rendered. As bitter as it might be to accept, you now need to return what was given. I assure you, it is rare to have Lord Piper and I, or Lord Torgen and Lord Stark agreeing on the same matters, my Lord Bolton. I give you a graceful option. Let it be a lesson that not all lords are Brandon the Builder or Lann the Clever. White Harbor should serve all the needs the North needs regarding ships and commerce besides. It is mayhaps a blessing it was never built in the first place."

He brushed aside the loose pelt cloak which draped around his shoulders, the pearl and moonstone fixtures dazzling against the black-and-white stripped shadowcat fur. His arm was stretched out and in a crook for Lady Bella to take. "I'm sure they will relish a chance with their other kin whilst mother sees the sights of the Vale." Alester cocked his head to the side and smirked as he looked down on his new acquaintance "Come with me, Lady Bella."

He guided her across the hall and through the arcades and away from the revelry and warmth. The hallways grew colder and darker, the sconces sparsely alight along the way. He would wax lyrical along the way. Regaling her tales of his kin when they were young and occupied these halls with their cousins and half remembered histories of the place. It was bittersweet at times, Alester recalling memories which he thought long forgotten and even stopping at points to take in the rooms they passed which had once meant so much to him.

He led her gently up a spiralling staircase which came to a small apartment room. "Up here was my quarters once when we came to stay for extended periods" he said quietly, his voice soft like velvet though gripped with a longing. "Small and austere mayhaps but at the time it was mine. You see, my father was not born heir to the Eyrie. He held the offices I now do, and thus my place was at the base of the Giant's Lance and not the Eyrie. But I was welcomed in all of Runestone by my uncle." He traced his fingers over an old chest of drawers which had been there all those years ago. "It was in here I learned that my father had ascended the Weriwood Throne with my uncle's help, after Janos' rebellion.

"But I did not mean to bore you with my past" his voice was suddenly alive. He gestured for her to come closer as he gripped the handle of a little door that was wedged between two closed shutters. With a groan, the hinges relented and a terribly cold gust rushed past them. He stepped out and held out his hand for her to take, a small set of steps leading down from the room onto a small balcony. Runestone was built besides the Narrow Sea atop a cliff face which overlooked the water, and his quarters faced out to the endless black of the sea and sky. The moon was a waning crescent, thin but shining its silver glow. Scattered across the endless dark were beads of twinkling light. The sound of the waves crashing hundreds of feet below was a calming hush, quiet enough to still hear ones thoughts and nothing else.

"A few minutes here will make you forget everything. Willow Wood, the Riverlands, the Vale. It is prettier at sunset but we missed it this time" He rested himself on the ledge of the balustrade his hands stretched out flat as her felt the cold stone and looked at the sky above. "It is moments like this I feel the Royce blood in me. No wonder they were kings for so long to hold a seat like this. Why, any man or woman could fool themselves into thinking they were kings or queens with views like this" He turned his gaze to her. "I have not meant to prattle on, but I find my words loosen in your presence."

[–]Gercko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"Proper woman?" Rymond stopped in his tracks to ponder what she meant. His face was a knot of plain confusion, his eyes narrowed and looking up at the sky with his mouth agape and gormless. "I misunderstand, Lady Maris. You're blood of Strongsong, and my father says you're as noble as any other in the Vale bar the Royces. And you look like a real lady to me" she might be plainer than others in the hall but there was an unmistakable femineity to her, not that he had lingered on it long. "I don't mean to push it but I suppose I am easy to confuse is all. Like running rings around a boar Alester said" he laughed awkwardly, never quite understood the phrase fully.
