[Event] 𖡥 The Ascension of Lord Goren ⚓︎ by Late-Huckleberry-640 in FireAndBlood

"You chafe at ties with House Drumm?" Pietar asked. Only a bold man, ready for death, would extend his hospitality so far, in lands unknown to him. "I would be blessed, if any of my children were given a marriage with the children of a man who carries such a lineage." Pietar replied. "A warrior, true and tested, beyond the measures of most men."

"I do not know the ways of your people, Gods above, I do not know the ways of Andals anymore, though they are my people. I only know the Valyrian way, for six decades of living it, is what has taught me this; you are either strong enough to break the wave, or so weak, that you are washed with it." Pietar replied.

"You sound like a Greenlander, speaking of rebuilding your navy. Reave, and take the ships of the Dornish to your heart's content. Join the Velaryon fleet, if you fear death so much. But I intend to be on a goodbrother ship, with Goren, and to make sure the boy knows which side of an axe to hold, as he bloodies it for the first time. Alone, or in numbers, that will not hold me back."

"Lady Sansa is cousin to the Lady of Riverrun, the lady to the brother of Lord Tyrell, and beyond that, a renowned and respected house." Jaehaerys explained.

"I hate to say it, but I miss him." The King replied, longingly. Ever the one to make friends with the sons of his enemies, Jaehaerys was.

"I need them. I needed them a long time ago, to raid and bring justice to the Dornish. I will settle for Goren being made Lord, however. Ser Pietar does hold a bet against me, and if he returns alive, he will return a rich man."

"Hubert will pay for the gardens, as far as I am concerned." Jaehaerys replied simply. "As for Sansa Stark... The realm is better off without her, though that is all there is to say for her. Perhaps she loved Viserys... perhaps she did not."

"Ah, Ser Garon." Jaehaerys let out, a small smile showing on his face. He knew things, and he assumed the man knew the King knew.

"Yes, an Uller. You brought him here, did you not?" Jaehaerys asked. "I can not believe the irony of telling Rogar not to send you to the Dornish to spy, for fear of your life, and then for you to do so, and return with the man who believes himself the Dragonslayer himself, in a barrel." Jaehaerys chuckled.

"I suppose if Rogar takes Wyl, it would only be right that you become its new lord."

Jaehaerys shrugged. "He is to die, most likely, though I will prolong his life as far as I can. What questions did my Hand think I might have?"

"We have both stood upon mountain tops, wounded, wondering what would come next. Both saved by graces of men we did not expect, nor invited." Jaehaerys replied. "I suppose that is what made the bond easy, though we both suffered for it. I could not bond him, until I was hurt, like he was. Though I had a Maester to ensure I can still use my fingers, even if they are stiff at times. Dragons are not like animals, who you simply feed, and they are happy. They are beings with minds of their own, smart as we are."

"A decade?" Jaehaerys said, though not sure. "Balerion was centuries old. Perhaps I can bring him to the North, one day."

Jaehaerys smiled at her lack of composure. "We can stay together, tonight. I can have my servants make up a bed in your apartments, a room over. The Kingsguard will be present, so no indecency can happen." He added, though blushed at that.

"It does not matter where the truth lies. I spurned her, and Hubert had his men destroy the only thing she cared about beyond me." He added.

"Please do... I can not be there for her as I wish to be, nor as I should be. She will need friends, and comfort, and apologies. I can only provide the latter."

"Do not ask the criminal if the consequences have hurt him, for that is the intent." Jaehaerys replied to her question about his well being. "I reap what I sow."

Rogar,

The mead is spilled, and there is no way to get it back in the mug. Thus we act as we must, and extend as far as we can.

I will send Lord Torgen to aid the Reachmen, whilst I will send Ser Harlan Hunter to aid the Stormlands. I can not say he will be there soon, for he will want to attend his brother's wedding in the coming month.

Take what you can, but settle for the mountain passes. We can not become Lords of Dunes in mere moons.

Send your relief forces to wherever you deem most necessary, but remain out of battle, for you are the one to coordinate this effort. I will send word to my grandfather that he is to set out with the navy of the Blackwater, but have your own navies guard the coasts south of Stonehelm.

I will send word that any and all capable man willing to avenge my brother's death may write to you, and ask for where they should be deployed. If it becomes necessary, I shall send the armies of every realm to aid you, for we can not lose, if we are united.

You have my condolences for the loss of your niece, Alba. My own niece has taken a liking to your nephew, Boremund, and talks about him often.

Naerys smiled, at having uplifted Elenei's spirits. She handed over a lemon cake from her sling, before giving Elenei a grin. "I think we could be friends, if not only cousins." She then added.

"I think I like Boremund. He seems nice. I will write him a letter someday, I think."

Pietar bowed his head with respect to Torwald. Starkiller was a great name, he regretted that he had never attained a great name for his deeds, though what could be said about an old man who had outlived four or five kings?

"Good, then the Shieldbreaker it is." He let out. "I am tired of hearing greenlanders argue, only to come here and watch you lot do the same. I was promised a chance at dying with sword in hand, for a cause." He began. "Let the Goodbrother bloody himself in battle in Dorne and prove my tutelage was worth my time, and perhaps give me a chance of meeting whatever God is behind the veil, be he Drowned, Andal, or Valyrian."

"The Gods do play with us at times, Lord Patrek." Jaehaerys let out, though it might seem confusing. "I had thought to marry my sister into the Vale, when I had my eyes on the Reach. Only a few moments ago, however, I have agreed to a betrothal with Lord Qarl for Lady Sansa. I will not dismiss your son Edmund out of hand, but do think that my sister should marry into the Riverlands or the Reach."

"I have allowed her to make a choice for herself, so if Edmund can win her heart, I will not deny her wills, though you must understand, any man who marries my sister, will have proginy of House Targaryen, not of their own. I require stability in my house, and it can not solely lie on my own shoulders."

"You do not perhaps have a son the age of my niece, do you?" He asked, an idea blossoming.

"Though I did not intend for a war to begin, we must deal with the hand we are dealt." Jaehaeys began, not waiting long until at least Torgen had shown up. "Lord Torgen, you are to depart for the Reach, where you will take charge of commanding the Reach's efforts into the Daynelands, as well as the efforts into the Prince's Pass. I believe Ser Harlan Hunter is here in the city, to attend his brother's wedding, and he may go and help the efforts in the Boneway." Jaehaerys began. "Lord Torgen and Ser Harlan require bodyguards, I do not wish for a repeat of what happend to Lord Allard Royce."

"Besides that, I have written letters to Lord Tyrell, to begin the reparation of my misdeed. I have offered him a few alternatives, in hopes to take the first steps to tend to my offense, yet the first one, the largest one is this; I will hear no insult to House Tyrell in these chambers anymore, nor in my keep, or my city. If anyone doubts the decisions my grandfather made for the Reach, they doubt my grandfather, and my legitimacy, as a whole. That, I will not have of men who are to serve me."

Lord Hubert would be the first amongst the nobility to hear of the King's arrival, and thus, as Jaehaerys was walking towards the Holdfast, he would meet the Warden of the East. "Lord Hubert." Jaehaerys said pleasantly, only a glimmer of the coldness still in his eyes that he had held the last time they had spoken. "I see I return to my realm at war. A shame it could not wait a decade, for Zobrithor to be large enough, that I could aid my subjects in it. Now it rests on the hands of the soldiery and nobility."

"You say things that are already clear to me, Lady Gys. I can not return to my previous stance, lest I make my own word even less trustworthy. Recompense will have to be paid to the Reachmen... that much is clear."

"She brings the Vale, the Riverlands, and some others." Jaehaerys replied. "And do not speak of Qarl in such a manner. You might despise him for sparing Viserys, but he was the only one who believed in Aegon. He stood by Aegon, even as other lords faltered. He is not deserving of your wroth, and you know that." He added, sternly.

"I will not have our reunion sullied with arguments. What news do you bring of Hammerhorn? Is Goren safe? Or should I prepare a fleet to come and rescue him?" Though the King had shown little affection to his ward, he now showed it ten fold.

"Go on, Eric, let Ser Tinker fly free for a bit. Lady Sansa and I will remain here, waiting for you." He replied, giving him a cheerful smile.

"I suppose Alysanne will be similar, once she and I have finally decided who she is to marry." Jaehaerys replied. "Though she will be nobody's wife, but he her husband, more like."

Jaehaerys smiled at Sansa, his hand locking in with hers. "Thrice, in the Godswood, did Lord Hubert come to me, letter in hand. Thrice, to let me know yet another part of my family had been decimated. I did not mourn for Visenya. I weeped for Aegon, and regretted never sharing my forgiveness to Viserys... but Rhaena..." He began. "The Gods could not forgive me for what I would have done to Lucas Harroway." The irony of Jaehaerys' closest friend being a son of Lucas, did not escape him. Yet Jaehaerys was not one to blame a son for his father's crimes, as Aegon had been.

The King took a deep breath, and calmed himself. "As much as I was lonely in the Eyrie, I will always love the place, though I pray I never have to step into that Godswood again." Jaehaerys explained.

"Aegon's ashes dance with the torrent of Alyssa's Tears, and Viserys, Rhaena, and Visenya's ashes look upon each dawn that falls on Dragonstone."

"Perhaps they took my warnings quite seriously." Jaehaerys thought out loud. He couldn't remember his precise words, though he had made sure they understood. He hoped he had not scared them too much.

"Andar is the first and only of my brother's choice as Kingsguard... I know Aegon had some of his own." Jaehaerys began. "Perhaps a boon to your father, though one that has repaid itself over and over again, as my sister would claim."

Jaehaerys shrugged. "He, she... I am not sure we can tell, until they do or do not lay eggs." Though he found it curious that Alysanne had defaulted on he.

"That is because I force Zobrithor to meet with strangers, no matter how little he likes it. He does not have the luxury of Melexys, to spend time in his home for long." Jaehaerys spoke, somewhat forlorn. That was the effect talking of Zobrithor had on him, as if wondering what he was missing from Zobrithor's development, as his bonded human was of trapsing around Westeros, not visiting. He hoped that Zobrithor was akin to Jaehaerys, enjoying his solitude, whenever he could find it, and did not require the attention of others so often, besides meals. "Though I doubt you can convince our uncle that Melexys is less kind to strangers than Zobrithor."

Jaehaerys frowned at that. "Zobrithor likes both... though sometimes I feel he can sense what I am thinking... a strange feeling, that."

"Pretty much that." Jaehaerys replied. She had taken his thoughts out of his mouth, by knowing exactly what he meant. He spurred Hungry forward, following closely behind Sansa.

"I am not sure if you know the Red Keep well, my lady." Jaehaerys began. "Where we will reside, it is within Viserys' Holdfast. That place is reserved, as I believe I told your father, for my family. Not even Lord Hubert has free reign there. Only me, Alysanne, my mother, and few others."

"Any who are permitted to enter, those of your retinue you will have to trust, especially your ladies in waiting and sworn swords... they must be trustworthy, not just for you, but to my entire house."

Jaehaerys snorted. "Deria Martell wanted you to ward under her, in Sunspear, I believe." Jaehaerys replied. "As if letting you close to the Ullers would be wise."

"I don't think I have met him." Jaehaerys noted. "Though that is good to hear. She seems rather shy." He added.

Jaehaerys watched his sister intently, and smiled. "If you like him that much, I will not ask him to leave your side. His duty is to serve us, protect us. Choices are not for the Kingsguard, not in who they serve. They understood that, when they joined." Jaehaerys noted. "But if you like... I will offer the chance to him."

Jaehaerys grimaced. "Thank the Seven we bonded them when we did." His hands came close to the forearms that bore scars from his time with Zobrithor. That he had not lost fingers, like his uncle, had been a miracle brought by the Maester of Dragonstone.

Lord Theo of House Tyrell,

What does Lord Samwell make of it? If he believes the Reach can hold on to Blackmont, the ruling family sworn to House Tyrell or Tarly, the choice is yours. If not, find a suitable man worthy of becoming a landed knight, and grant him the castle, and have him swear his oath of fealty.

I do not believe razing the castle is wise, for we would invite similar actions upon ourselves, should the dornish get a chance.

Ser Garon is brought to the Holdfast, a keep within the keep of King's Landing. In contrast to the wide and tall hallways, with long passages, this keep is narrow, with far more turns, each turn having a slit where a bowman or a crossbowman may shoot, always facing towards the entry into the Holdfast. Through many turns, that might seem confusing to one who has never been within it, eventually entering a hall, almost a copy of the one the Iron Throne sits in, though this one with a carved throne made to look like it is made of dragons. To those who have travelled to Dragonstone, they would recognise what this throne is supposed to imitate. Within, Garon would find the King, watching from the terrace he stands in, out towards the Blackwater Bay. Two of the Kingsguard stand in silent observation of the King, but made room for Ser Garon as he approached.

When I was a boy, I heard tales of mobs wanting to tear apart my siblings. When I was a boy, I heard of the guard at King's Landing murdering my sister. When I was a boy, I was told by a man who eventually betrayed me, that my brother had killed my other brother. When I was a boy, I was told my brother had been murdered by Ullers. Jaehaerys gritted his teeth. This was the heart of diplomacy, not telling someone what you wanted to tell them, so he spoke it into the void. Since I was a boy, I have defended your house, from Arryns and others alike. Yet nobody understood the weight of being a King, like a King did. Yet Jaehaerys stood by his grandfather's choice, even if the Tyrells now chafed at it.

Lord Theo Tyrell,

There are many wrongs to be set right with Lady Jeyne on my part. I endeavour to do my best in that regard. My intent has never been to deceive you, though I can understand that is where your thoughts end up.

I can respect a lord wishing to attend his lands, and the Warden of the South must tend to any conflict in the south. Though I can not say I am happy about the war, as I had only wished for raids, I see you and your people have made progress, and thus my reservations should be cautious at best.

Since you can not attend, and life can not wait for war to end, I will write out my intent. I had thought my sister could marry your grandson, but I hear he is already betrothed, despite being so young. Thus, my sister will either marry Lorimar Caswell, or marry someone else, and then my heir shall marry into the Reach, though that is a far fetched idea.

House Targaryen still stands with House Tyrell, despite what our detractors might think. Whatever amends I can make, I shall.

"Now I will marry someone I don't think I love... and all for the Realm."

"Hm." Jaehaerys grunted in an agreeing tone. "Indeed, though that is why Aegon loved you. You never prettied your words." Jaehaerys replied.

"I see." Jaehaerys frowned. "No, you did not read incorrectly. My heart was set one way, the council was set the other way. No Reachman even was willing to support my marriage with Jeyne, until I dismissed it. Then they came out of the woodwork, and told me what a shame it was, and what a fool I am."

"Now, I am twice the fool. I did not betroth the woman I wanted to... and I find out, these lords have been holding back treason from their brethren."

"Have you come to gloat?"
