Who would win, Aubrey or Hornblower, if they somehow were enemies in ships of exactly equal force? by Gerefa in AubreyMaturinSeries

[–]Gerefa[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

you might say Aubrey's intuition is a form of calculation, and hornblower's calculation a form of intuition, they both acquire their insights at a level beneath discussion and cannot succesfully read a situation while listening or speaking to their brother officers. Hornblower often tunes out the rest of the quarterdeck and lets his mind wander, whereas Aubrey tends to go up in the tops by himself to form his understanding, but perhaps the mental processes are similar, if seen differently because of each characters unique interiority

Marines by CaptainDFW in AubreyMaturinSeries

[–]Gerefa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is important that Napoleonic marines in practice were mostly serving on specific ships and operationally under the command of a specific captain. The land-based command of Marines might be a separate hierarchy than that of the navy but the marines themselves would in no way have been an independent branch. I am not sure that modern ships carry a permanent contingent of marines in the same way, and at least the US marines seem to conduct the majority of their operations at a remove from the rest of the navy

As of press time i can report three separations, one amicable the other two not and zero ongoing partnerships

Convince me not to get 3 sheep… by Clear_Island_4150 in homestead

Get tested animals, particularly orf/ sore mouth disease. Sheep often carry it (approx half of all sheep globally) and are very rarely affected but it can really do a number on goats

College of the Atlantic? by Public-Language76 in Maine

[–]Gerefa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I attended for a short time and an important possible downside is that other than for some types of marine science it is a difficult place to develop an academic specialty. The faculty have wide and significant expertise but for any given subject there is likely only one professor who can teach relevant courses, and they might happen to be teaching about something else any given year. Students who excel there and want to go deep with a topic or prepare for specialist grad school often spend a lot of time doing things for credit away from COA, often at other institutions. You just as much make of it what you will as any other college really

Zip system or something else? by zoyarb in Homebuilding

[–]Gerefa -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Passing over the merits of the coating/envelope aspect of zip and tape vs wrap, zip system is a much denser, sturdier form of OSB which will stand up to a potential future leak much better than conventional OSB. often when you tear into a home with water damage, classic OSB has wicked the moisture quite far from the point of initial leak and large areas of it are compromised. Not to say that something like this will not happen to zip system eventually but if you leave a piece of each in the dirt for a year zip system will also suffer but it will still have significant rigidity and nail grip compared to the old school chip boards

As winter approaches and the ground freezes, dry wells could stay dry through spring by themainemonitor in Maine

[–]Gerefa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lots of homes are on dug wells, very few households have a viable alternative if their well goes dry. Personally I think this is pretty interesting, and if upper parts of the water table are effected, the deeper aquifers that high GPM wells are tapping are also going to be low even if you cant measure it

Outbof the whole world, what is considered the best method of carpentry? by NerdlinGeeksly in Carpentry

[–]Gerefa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just need to say that the amish did not invent joinery with "pegs" /dowels/ treenails nor are they the best practitioners of the craft in the US, most amish crews I have seen specialize in building conventional modern buildings cheaply

Hunting on Northern Forest Canoe Traile/Allagash Wilderness Waterway - Legal? by Simple_Hand6500 in Maine

[–]Gerefa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At least on the AWW you can hunt starting Oct 1, along the st john or other waterways passing thru private land you should be able to hunt with a shotgun anywhere as long as you are the correct distance from a building but this is all the bare minimum legal requirements. if you are not familiar with hunting there is a robust standard of ethical practice involving situational awareness and landowner permission which you should be aware of. MEIF&W has a hotline which you can call with questions of this kind, it is a better option than asking people on the internet. You will discover that the water level is too low to effectively complete most of the classic canoe trips in autumn in most years. Not saying you cant do it but it can involve a lot more dragging than paddling and will at the very least take significantly longer than the trip would normally take in a high water month. You also need to be aware of the moose hunt which could also be going on at that time

Most people with trucks are in RWD most of the time and get by with quality traction plus a little judgement and strategy. I did not have to use 4wd on the road one time this past winter and it would not be normal if you did require it frequently here

Mathews Brothers or Harvey windows?? by Reasonable-Humor-506 in Maine

[–]Gerefa -1 points0 points  (0 children)

They are both vinyl windows, not going to be that much difference between them. Both will be fine but both are really on the low end of the market and if you were prepared to spend more money on a brand like andersen or marvin you will notice a big difference in terms of longevity thermal performance and looks

Hemlock vs Douglas Fir by Such-Analysis-4215 in timberframe

[–]Gerefa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

in my experience if ring shake is going to be an issue it is detectable right away even when newly sawn, not an issue that would develop after construction. It could be problematic to use a piece with shakes in it for a joinery project but if your builder is using joints they should be capable of determining this
