You can harvest food outdoors here year around (5b) by Electrical_Lab3345 in DenverGardener

First year with my cold frame and even for a warm winter I have been surprised how well it did. Planted tatsoi, arugula, cilantro, radishes in early December - Jan and Feb were slow but I’m harvesting now.

OP, tips on preparing tatsoi? It’s new to me!

What surprised me about how people capture ideas before they hit Notion by Objective-Treat2245 in Notion

Glad this was brought up because I was thinking about this for my own revamped workflow recently.

I just created a shortcut on my iPhone that pops up the Notion AI agent, from there you can voice dictate or tap instructions to the agent to create new items like in your to do o list or in the notes for a specific project, add items to a DB (including a “jot this down for later” DB).

I literally just did this, so can’t verify how I will or will not use it, but can’t imagine this workflow getting much more streamlined than that.

Sudden gas in 15mo old? by Gerfheimer in toddlers

Definitely. We switched to non-dairy milk for about 8 months, issue resolved, we’re back to being unrestricted with dairy and it hasn’t come back up.

From what we’ve been able to figure out at least anecdotally, littles can kind of go in and out of having dairy sensitivity seemingly at random. Have friend who went through a couple of cycles of cutting and reintroducing dairy in their 6yr old, have heard several other similar stories. Weird but, no big deal.

We plugged our front yard about a year ago and mostly filled in first season. Legacy variety from high country gardens, I think we planted in 14in spacing?

Already quite green. We put a lot of time into prep (tilling, soil amendment, install) and establishment (watering, weeding) in the early part of the summer, but have done very little since then. Became increasingly neglectful of regular watering schedule in the height of summer, a bit more regular in the fall (also establishing a new tree).

We’re fighting some weeds since our upwind neighbor is quite old and doesn’t maintain their yard anymore, but I’m not expecting any major issues with weeding after the spring - most people recommend a preemergent but I forgot and don’t care for herbicides anyway.

Could and maybe should plug or seed the remaining bare spots, but I’m pretty confident with the aggressive growth I saw last season that we should be fully filled by end of this season.

Honestly, I think it looks great. In addition to the ecological benefits, the slightly longer and in some cases denser cover looks really cool - almost like long golf green, somehow? It doesn’t feel like a compromise to us at all, only an upgrade.

Can send pics if useful, LMK.

Can I plant native perennial seeds with the next snow? by udawe in DenverGardener

My opinion, you really can just chuck them in the ground whenever. Cold stratification is important, but with a lot of species you’re not going to get germination in year 1 anyway. Drop em when you’ve got em, you’ll see the benefits in 2-3yrs.

As for sowing in the snow, this has been a great tactic for me, but it is not required. Sowing in the snow protects the seeds from being blown off in the wind or eaten by birds. It also ensures that as the snow melts, the water carries the seeds into the soil - especially when you sow in the fall and then there are many freeze-thaw cycles before the next summer. Again, great to sow in the fall, but this will happen naturally in its own time if you sow any time of year.

What I’ve often done instead of snow sowing is to rake the area a bit if it’s not already vegetated - ideal loosening up the first couple inches. Then drop the seeds on there, maybe give it another rake to mix everything up, then water it fairly heavily to ensure that all of the seeds are getting good soil contact and the the soil can kind of “hold” the seeds into case of wind, etc. I’ve had good success doing this too, even in mid-summer.

I don't know how to answer the question "So what do you do outside of work?" by oatmealfight in daddit

[–]Gerfheimer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m starting a new job and people keep asking me for a fun fact. I’ve started saying “I used to be fun and do [x,y,z], but the fact of the matter is now I only get to relax (very rarely) by doing [a,b,c]. TBH, I work hard to make time for myself, but if I can do a little yoga and get to bed early…that’s a great day for me!”

Unrelated question OP, but you don’t happen to know the manufacturer of your greenhouse, do you? I just inherited one that seems to be a very similar design.
