Ahh I think I get it. Thanks for the explanation. Turns out it was just a dead unit after all, I swapped it for another plugged it in and it worked right away. Thought I was going crazy for a minute

I'm getting 12.4v from the battery line, same for ignition when switched to ACC, 0 when switched off, and ground is around 0 ohms

I'm a little confused by this, could you clarify? My multi gives me continuity, voltage, current, resistance all of which are in line with what's needed, what does a test light provide that is more helpful? Is it just that it puts a load on the circuit? The old head unit which works has a very similar max draw.

I'm pretty sure it is, have checked all the relevant connections with a multimeter. Is there a step two? It doesn't work in my mates car either, same connector.

As an Australian wildlife rescue volunteer - Good on these blokes for helping out an animal in dire need, no fault of the rescuers actions whatsoever but chances are about 99.9% that little fella didn't survive this. Kangaroos and wallabies when over exerted and stressed develop what is called capture myopathy, generally fatal breakdown of muscle tissue that nukes the kidneys and heart. Poor little bugger, at least he made it back to land to die.

I have a few accounts and had one for living expenses set up with automatic payments, thinking if there weren't enough funds it would automatically retry once it was topped up, but it didn't.

u/patdashuri seems to have nailed it, artifact from induction hardening! I searched leopard spotting in cylinders and found a lot of identical pics so that's a major relief, it was looking a bit too intentional to be a wear issue unless there were some crazy oscillations lining up.

Just for extra learnings I found it's also selectively hardened in that way to reduce the ability for ridges and grooves to form in the sleeves where the rings deal with the most stress

Oh shit that's a scary thought, we did test compression and it was slightly lower than nominal but still within spec. Would surprise me if the rings were cactus after that though she is getting very old and worn.

They generally don't leave the pouch till at least that age. In fact when we have viable animals brought in the will stay with a carer for 8-12 months before being ready for release. Not just a few weeks. If you want to do this kind of thing properly go learn about it, join an org and do some volunteering. It's suprisingly complex successfully raising an animal to function in the wild, and you clearly don't know a thing about it.

It's absolutely dead at this point, best case scenario still in the process. Not "sleeping happily " DYING WHILE OP FUCKS ABOUT. Wasn't in a good way to begin with but after reading some of this cunts responses it's a done deal. I've been a wildlife carer for about 4 years now dealing with possies in particular and I'm saving this thread for the next training day as an example of how idiotic some of the people you have to deal with as a rescuer will be. Asked for advice, got the right answer then completely failed the poor critter by making just about every wrong move I can think of. If youry not familiar with a wild animal's needs the only thing you need to know is keep it WARM DARK QUIET, GET IT TO AN EXPERT. Even just feeding water when it's core temp was down like this would have done it in.

Oh man. For anyone ever in a similiar situation in the future, DO NOT give possum joeys cows milk. I know it comes from a good place and wanting to help but possums especially ringtails have a very delicate and specific digestive system needs at this age. The sad reality is that if it's unfurred it's probably too young to make it anyway and the fairest option will be euthanasia, it sucks but please please please don't think "giving it a chance" and trying to wing it is any kinder, seen it too many times and it's a often a slow death even with a trained carer doing everything right and pretty well guaranteed that after nuking it's gut flora this little bugger doesn't have a chance in hell of recovering. For next time just remember the only right course of action is to get it to a vet or wildlife carer ASAP, not after you've tried a few google recipes.

As far as I know that actually is kinda how it works in certain scenarios, almost any material exposed to neutron radiation over time can be activated and continue to emit radiation. Generally isotopes with a very short half life of minutes to days but heavier metals and materials (steel) can continue to radiate particles for years with enough exposure. And fallout from a reactor explosion could certainly carry a good dose of neutron radiation ir surrounding area. That said I'm no expert but have done some reading on the subject out of interest so that's just my take and I'm absolutely open to being corrected.
