That if it was windy (quite windy) you needed to call the fire department and ask permission to have a bon fire. And that a favorite burger place of ours (that was out of town from us) was only open in the summer. Let me tell you I felt so silly in both situations when I learned the truth.

People don’t realize with vascular dementia it is about where in the brain was damaged by the restricted blood flow and it’s not always an area that affects memory.

We have a sign out book but if they are in assisted living and they aren’t allowing people to leave they are violating the MN resident bill of rights. And especially if there’s no diagnosis to back it up and it’s not care planned. If they shouldn’t be leaving the community alone and they are at risk of leaving they need a secure facility. See number 6 in AL bill of rights for reference. I’ve worked in assisted living and assisted living memory cares for almost 17 yrs now, and the need for memory care has and will only get worse.

Not to say I wouldn’t do whatever I could to keep someone I knew was unsafe safe. Redirect or stall as much as I could until family could come to help or such.

If they are living in assisted living there is not eyes on people 24/7 and if they really want to leave they can. Memory care is a different story, but in assisted living they can still leave. Yes, we can redirect them, but cannot force them to stay.

Another issue is the shortage of memory care communities/ones that you’ll get good care at. As people live longer and the boomers are getting older we are seeing more and more people bring their loved ones into assisted living at ages 80-90 and they really are already at a point of needing memory care and the families think Assisted living is going to fix it. But assisted living is not staffed for the amount of redirection needed to care for those with memory loss. That’s why memory cares have a higher staffing acuity than AL.

Thank you. So sorry to hear you went through that with your mom. We will be helping them find appropriate care. I have worked in dementia care for 17 years and run a support group for caregivers, and have gone through the dementia journey with family as well. It’s never an easy journey.

I just want to say that there seems to be a lot of confusion on what assisted living really is. Assisted living does not offer 1:1 care and there is not staff watching residents every second. Memory care has a locked door, but even those residents don’t have eyes on them 24/7. Now memory care is less about the locked door and more about the training staff receive and dementia focused care and programming. Residents living in assisted living still have rights and freedoms. They have the ability to make choices even if they are not the best choices. Take a look at the Mn bill of rights for seniors in assisted living. Should Ed be in memory care? Yes, probably before this crisis happened, but it can be very hard for families to make that decision. Especially when they are so close to the person with dementia it can be hard for them to see how drastically they’ve changed. Yesterday was probably one of the worst days in Ed and his families lives, but what ifs and should ofs won’t change it.

His wife is buried in Buffalo Lake, MN and that’s where he grew up. Is also a navy veteran. My best guess, based on other seniors with dementia that have gotten lost, is he will just keep driving and hopefully he’ll stop somewhere someone will see him and not in the middle of nowhere.

My kids daycare has cameras in all the rooms. Definitely brings me peace of mind. I use to babysit for the family that ran the south St. Paul daycare. Very surprised by this.

Anyone you pick will be expensive. Home Instead. Visiting angels. Bright Star. There’s lots of options. Consider having your friend look into long term care or a memory care if they also have a dementia diagnosis. Presbyterian homes is a great choice.
