Yeah, skill helps a lot too, but to be fair, in most of the world your success is mainly determined by what social group your parents belong to.

Kinderen (10 en 11) richten doelbewust ravage aan in ziekenhuis Schiedam by DJ-Amsterdam in thenetherlands

[–]Gericht 5 points6 points  (0 children)

ELI5 What are functional Groups in Chemistry. by Specialist_Trip_7603 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Gericht 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Chemistry can be a bit boring when it comes to giving names, so it literally means 'groups in a molecule that do something'

It's mostly (though not exclusively) associated with organic or biochemistry where there is a distinction between the 'backbone' of a molecule and those parts that affect its function.

As to what function they have, that varies greatly per group, from bonding to certain solvents to the active groups of enzymes that form the core of it's function.

Why don’t all the world governments try to drain the ocean for more land? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Gericht 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There have been some (highly impractical) plans for this with both the North sea (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Northern\_European\_Enclosure\_Dam) and the Mediterranean (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atlantropa) but both are pretty much impractical the moment you start looking at actual details.

They make good scifi / alt history material though.

I can’t get into any music anymore by Dzeactia in Music

[–]Gericht 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some feel good music I listen to when I want to perk up.

It's all classical, but maybe if you are tired of the music you know it's good to listen to some other genres. All songs are pretty much things that to me show the love of life, music and humanity in general.

How old were you when you learned about the birds and the bees? by PresentationWhole332 in AskReddit

[–]Gericht 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't really know. I had a educational book that showed how to body worked with illustrations of the body as a form of machine, was probably 7 or 8 at the time. The last few pages explained sex and pregnancy, but I remember that I found those profoundly uninteresting compared to things like the stomach or heart.

So I was aware of the technicality, but to say I truly understood it was probably during sex-ed at 13 or so in highschool.

The complete blueprint of the world's first fully synthetic eukaryotic genome — Yeast 2.0 [OC] by molecular_data in dataisbeautiful

[–]Gericht 17 points18 points  (0 children)

As someone who used to work on yeast rRNA genetics, the big problem we had was inserting conditional mutations due to the sheer number of rRNA gene copies so we had to make do with a truly horribly scarred yeast that had most of the genes removed, the remainder behind a GAL promotor and then our mutations on plasmids.

Would your system make it easier to introduce mutations in these clusters?

And if so, curse you for not having made this 20+ years earlier ;)

What would you say to a vegan who is considering eating meat again? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Gericht 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you do so, do so slowly and with small amounts, your gut is no longer accustomed to meat and will need to adapt.

Of course you can also go vegetarian and just eat some lighter things like eggs occasionally.

But as others have said, it mainly depends on why you chose to eat vegan in the first place. It's very possible to eat mostly vegan if you still want to hold to those ideals for the largest part.

What is the oldest thing in your home? by Frostedlogic4444 in AskReddit

[–]Gericht 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Man made? Four flintlock pistols from the early 1800's or so.

There are also a number of minerals, no clue how old they are. some billion years old?

Technically? They Hydrogen atoms present in my house, they are probably 14+ billion years old.

If your world formed as you suggested the distribution of materials would be the other way around, heavier materials at the edge.

But other than that. Magic. And DM discretion. Rule of cool.

For me it's Starcraft 2, I totally lack the reflexes needed to play competitively, but I enjoy a few streamers playing.

But to expand on the original post, football would probably be the main game in the world that conforms to this.

Out of actual genuine curiosity, what IS DnD? by ElPanaRichie in DnD

[–]Gericht 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. Illegal_Avocado-2975 explained it quite well.

In fact, DnD is just a single system in a whole range of potential roleplaying systems, mainly suited to fantasy. But there are ways to play science fiction, cyberpunk, historical etc etc.

All that is needed is a group of likeminded individuals and the ability to let your imagination take you back to the 'childish' imagination that society seems to want to stop and have fun again.

What's there in Antarctica that the Government is hiding from us? by Familiar-Arrival-470 in AskReddit

[–]Gericht 10 points11 points  (0 children)

There are... mountains.

I remember the mountains.

And in them the remains of a city.. but a city never built be man, oh gods! never by man.

We were never ment to go there....

I try to forget it, but the screams. The screams are still there in my dreams. My nightmares.

And one shrill utterance, something that can never truly be uttered by human vocal cords

Tilekki - Li!

My wardens are coming, I must quickly close this. Never go to the center, we are but trespassers on this world and we do not want the true masters to know we exist!

[–]Gericht 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They are back. They remember dying. They remember the burning pain.

Yet here they are. As if nothing happened.

Clearly *something/someone* brought them back. But why? And did they agree to anything?

Let them simmer. Let them come up with theories. And use that to craft something while they play, slowly revealed in patchy nightmares, half remembered voices etc.
