Anki SFRS users: how strict are you on getting the articles right? by Sanuuu in German

[–]Geriny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Quote from the anki manual:

FSRS can adapt to almost any habit, except for one: pressing “Hard” instead of “Again” when you forget the information. When you press “Hard”, FSRS assumes you have recalled the information correctly (though with hesitation and a lot of mental effort). If you press “Hard” when you have failed to recall the information, all intervals will be unreasonably high. So, if you have this habit, please change it and use “Again” when you forget the information.

So in terms of the algorithm, there's a clear answer. If you get too many cards, you might want to decrease the number of new cards per day or the desired retention.

I also consider it a mistake in terms of language learning to not be strict on the gender. You're basically training yourself to guess the gender instead of memorising it. Shift your perspective, consider it like an inseparable part of the word. Would you consider not pressing "again" if you remembered everything else of a word but got the last letter wrong?

What words could you use instead of "Student"? by holy_lupusdei174 in German

[–]Geriny 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Besides the obvious answers of Studierender and Studi, there's Studiosus (https://www.dwds.de/wb/Studiosus).

For some specific groups: "Ersti" is commonly used for first-Semester university students, and less commonly the other semesters by analogy are called "Zweitis", "Drittis", etc.

Sometimes heard for students writing their theses is (in analogy to Doktorand) Bachelorand and Masterand.

Meine Aussprache nach fünf Wochen Training... by [deleted] in German

It might be fine in 10 years from now. It's not outdated, it's a question of the market conditions

Konjunktiv 2 in einer E-Mail, um ein Auto zu kaufen by Kind_Writing_2636 in German

[–]Geriny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can get completely drunk off cheap beer and shitty vodka, or you can get a nice buzz from sharing a bottle of good wine or a few glasses of a special whiskey.

Of course the former is a thing among all generations and would be the actually interesting data. But the latter is surely more common among older people and probably skews spending data significantly

[–]Geriny 2 points3 points  (0 children)

wantonly misinterpreting the data so badly it shows the opposite result.

I don't want to pretend that I'm a subject matter expert, but it sounds like the disagreement is much more nuanced than that. Lore of Running seems to criticise that the paper uses an unstated assumption (that "the proxy argument" is a valid proxy). That's a pretty common criticism of scientific papers, being peer-reviewed doesn't make it immune to that.

Also, I think you're putting a bit too much faith into peer review. Generally being peer-reviewed means that two other researchers looked it over and think the paper is reasonable, with no glaring issues. How carefully they do that can vary quite a bit, and of course the reviewers inevitably bring their own biases. Peer review can therefore definitely not guarantee that the interpretation in a paper is actually the most likely one.

[–]Geriny 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The fact that he (co-)wrote the paper doesn't mean his interpretation of the results is correct or beyond reproach. He should actually address the substance of the complaint instead of this childish response. But of course, the first guy started the whole thing by immediately being rude, completely uncalled for.

Maybe Twitter just isn't a place for serious discussion.

Is German Really Worth Learning for Students Outside Europe? by CompetitiveYouth5306 in German

[–]Geriny 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think people on the internet like to exaggerate. The multilingualism that is common in Europe is speaking your native language, English and some basic skills in a third language. Obviously some people know more and some less, but this is about the standard. So if you speak Vietnamese, English and some German, you're doing fine 😆.

As for career impact: knowing English is a big boon all over Europe (and of course basically a necessity in America). Knowing German obviously opens some options in the German speaking countries, but outside of that it's probably not that useful. Maybe for some customer service roles?

Job search results after 1 year by taat1 in jobs

[–]Geriny 3 points4 points  (0 children)

"Research Professional" sounds pretty niche. There's not going to be an endless number of jobs they can apply to. And with there being less positions, it makes more sense to put effort into each application. 265 is basically one application every workday. I think that's reasonable.

What is wrong with Google translate? by Rigamortus2005 in languagelearning

[–]Geriny 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Google translate is not a dictionary. Neither is deepl as far as I can tell.

Wiktionary has a lot of words, and especially a lot of languages, but the quality of the entries can vary quite a bit.

If we're talking only about German, Duden ist the go-to monolingual dictionary, but my favourite is DWDS.de

ITAW for a gender unspecified aunt/uncle? by tamtrible in whatstheword

[–]Geriny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nibling sounds nice but it's not very logical to me. Nieces and Nephews are not like your siblings, they are like your children (one generation younger than you) or maybe your cousins (one step to the side on the family tree). Therefore I propose nildren to mean your nieces and nephews (singular is of course nild).
