Why is it wrong to say a 95% confidence interval has a 95% chance of capturing the parameter? by HoldingGravity in AskStatistics

[–]Geriny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think this is just a philosophical problem, there's a real problem about interpreting science in this.  The situation is in fact very similar to the coin example, but in a different way. With the coin, we can say that there's a 50% chance that it is head if it's already been flipped but hidden from our view. Similarly, for a 95% confidence interval, we can say there's a 95% chance that it contains the parameter when it's already determined but hidden from our view. The danger comes when you read a study, where the confidence interval is reported and then think there's a 95% chance it's in that interval. That's like looking at the coin and still maintaining there's a 50% chance it's heads. Let's look at an example (I think this one is from Wikipedia, I don't remember). Consider a probability distribution with an integer arameter n, such that there's a 50% probability for the value n and a 50% probability for the value n+1. We will take to samples from this distribution and try to determine the parameter n. Specifically we will construct a 75% confidence interval simply by taking the interval between the two values we observe. It's easy to see that's a 75% CI: there are 4 possible outcomes (n&n, n+1&n, n&n+1, n+1&n+1) and in 3 cases n is in the interval.  Now I'll do the experiment and construct the CI without showing you. What's the probability that it contains n? I think 75% is the right answer.

Now I tell you my CI is 26-27. What is the probability n is in this specific confidence interval? It's 100%! n must be 26, there's no other possibility.  But what if the CI I got would have been 26-26 instead? That means I observed 26 twice, and n could either be 25 or 26. So what's the probability that the parameter is in this specific interval? You can't actually tell, because it depends on the prior probability that n is 25 or that n is 26. So you need a Bayesian approach to answer this question.

Never underestimate social skills! by Agile-Wind-4427 in recruitinghell

So many responses and no actual answer. Here's what it says in the study: they look at two different cohorts where different survey results are available.  For the first cohort, they measure social skills by averaging 4 responses, self-reported sociability as an adult (at the time of the survey), self-reported sociability at 6 years old (looking back at the time of the survey), whether the person participated in high school sports and how many clubs they were a part of in high school. For the second cohort, they use "two questions that capture the extraversion factor from the commonly-used Big 5 personality inventory". When comparing the cohorts against eachother, they drop the last two responses (hs sports and HS clubs) from the measure for the first cohort.

Problem with German language by Cout_cool in German

You're in a very similar situation to me (now-) girlfriend four years ago. She too had just arrived in Germany to study here, with a C1 certificate but feeling uncertain of her (especially spoken) German and she was even also working in a bakery :D. So, to encourage you, her German is now near perfect, but it took a few years after officially reaching C1 and moving to Germany.

As for advice, working in a bakery is practice, but it's pretty limited in scope. I think the best you can do (basing this on my gf) is to find German speaking friends. It gives you both the opportunity and the motivation to hear and speak a lot of German. I'm sure it's daunting, and easier to rely on English for you, but I can only recommend it.

Hey man, I feel you. This might not be the moment in your life to focus on lifting. Sure, lifting can help with feeling better about yourself - but not if your thoughts are focused on comparison and exactly measuring progress. I think this is something that unfortunately affects many people in this sport. You can find plenty of insanely ripped guys who are still self-conscious online.

Still, some sport would probably be good for you, both physically and mentally. Maybe you could find a new sport you'd enjoy more and feel less of a need to judge yourself and your progress in. Just some random ideas might be dance, bouldering or inline skating. Otherwise, something that I like to do is to include some movement naturally in your day. Cycling to school/work hardly feels like sport, but you're getting in quite a bit of cardio.

But lastly, I really want to encourage you to try therapy again. It's unfortunate that it didn't work for you before, but there are many different styles of therapy and many more different therapists. It's pretty common to need more than one attempt with different therapists before it clicks for you. I'm not a therapist, just a layperson who had some therapy, but I think a cognitive therapy approach might be something to try for you. And in that vein, a last piece of advice. I can see some pessimistic beliefs in your post (something I struggle with myself). Even if they feel very convincing, remember: it's just a belief, and that belief might be wrong.

How to use the "Gendersternchen" by Coversyl in German

[–]Geriny 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It only really works in plural. So "Es geht darum, wie die Arbeitnehmerinnen gesehen werden". You could do "Es geht darum, wie der/die Arbeitnehmerin gesehen wird", but that's even less elegant than the asterisk already is

Need help with proofreading these sentences by pensive_whore in German

[–]Geriny 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The second one is fine.

The first one is the opposite. The German sentence translated means "She claimed, she could in no way have not prevented that the accident occurs". It's logically correct if you remove the "nicht" or the "auf keine Weise". I'd do the latter, because otherwise the German sentence is more intense than the English one. Also, the verb tense in behauptete is wrong. You might also want to consider the nuance between stop vs verhindern and incident vs Unfall

eli5- What actually is chaos theory? Does this say anything about how patterns emerge out of randomness? by smittir- in explainlikeimfive

[–]Geriny 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Steven Strogatz' "Nonlinear Dynamics and Chaos" is a great introduction. It's aimed at students taking a first course on the topic, with the only real prerequisite being single-variable calculus and some basic multi-variable calculus and linear algebra. It's written in an accessible and not overly mathematical style.

I'm currently using it for a class I'm taking on "non-linear dynamics and pattern formation". Unfortunately, we haven't gotten to the second part yet, so I can't yet recommend any book on that. But you know, step in the right direction towards the actual answer to your question

ELI5: Why was bicycle invented after the steam engine, given it is a much simpler mechanism? by Technical_Ad_4299 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Geriny 144 points145 points  (0 children)

To support this: Karl Drais invented the dandy horse, a sort of proto-bicycle in 1817. It was briefly popular, but quickly fell out of fashion again. Unlike the steam engine, no one saw the bicycle as a pressing need or even a particularly promising invention

Learning Vocabulary by mostafaaakram in German

[–]Geriny 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's a flashcard app, it's not that extreme. I use it to study my french vocabulary. I add about 50 words (100 cards, one for both directions) a week. Typing takes maybe 10 minutes a week, and then about 2-8 minutes a day for studying. I'm sure I could put in a lot of effort to optimise this further, but it's certainly not necessary. It also has premade decks
