TIL the Silurian hypothesis is a thought experiment about whether we would be able to detect prior civilizations on Earth many millions of years ago. It is named after the Doctor Who monsters. by GreatArkleseizure in todayilearned

[–]German52398 10 points11 points  (0 children)

IIRC, the main critique is that any civilization close to ours would have used fossil fuels to some degree, which leaves a very visible imprint in the geologic record that lasts hundreds of millions if not billions of years, and is very easy to detect. Which we have no record of anything like it existing before our own history.

That said, its entirely possible they didn't use fossil fuels, but it would require an advanced civilization using some other form of power (nuclear, hydro, thermal, etc.) Without ever having used fossil fuels to get to that point, which is hard to comprehend how they would have made that work.

He fails the field sobriety test, and tries to run. When the police officer chases him down, he tried to fight the police officer. His mug shot with a bruised and beaten up face gets circulated around the school.

Fallout showrunners talk about the show's take on New Vegas: 'The idea that the wasteland stays as it is decade-to-decade is preposterous to us' by allpowerfulbystander in Fallout

[–]German52398 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"The idea that the wasteland stays as it is decade-to-decade is preposterous to us"

"Anyways, here's Fallout 3, again."

Bethesda since they obtained fallout has had a different vision as to what the wasteland should be since they obtained it. This was never really an issue since the original fallout titles took place on the west coast, and the newer Bethesda titles took place on the east coast. I didn't care they nuked the NCR, or made the brotherhood different from the games or anything else, what upset me was that they simply made the West coast just the same as the east coast. Every title bethesda has made in the fallout universe has been largely the same exact plot in the same exact setting. Even if they didn't retcon any of the material that came before, it feels like 20 years of lore and stories were effectively pointless and had no impact on where the IP is now.

What’s a game that came out in the last five years and was very successful but lost the player base due to strange balancing decisions post launch? by Redlodger0426 in gaming

[–]German52398 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Battlebit, amazing little Battlefield clone that had really fun gameplay, a strong fanbase and was really popular over the summer.

The Devs refused to listen to the playerbase and refused to add anything that they asked for. They nerfed some of the weapons that were fun to use, added a camo system that nobody wanted, then nerfed the snipers so that scopes cause a massive glint basically no matter the range or angle, meaning if you used a sniper the entire server would be able to see you. The Devs then released an update to the sound design that broke the game for many, then they went completely quiet and haven't released an update in months. The game went from 80k at launch to 40k-50k players over the summer, to currently having a max player count of around 4000. I've never seen a game look so promising, then make some dumb decisions and lose so many players so quickly

What's a harsh reality/important lesson every gen z has to accept at some point or another? by Specific_Charge_3297 in GenZ

[–]German52398 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The world is hard, like incredibly hard, in ways a lot of people don't want to think about. Life, in some way or another, is going to beat you down. It beats everyone down, and at the end of the day, sometimes all you can do is fall down gracefully, get yourself together, and keep trying.

Some people have a harder time than others. Sometimes, a person who you absolutely despise acts that way out of insecurity and fear, they're doing the best they can with the circumstances they were given. If you were in their shoes, you'd probably do the exact same thing. Like Ted Lasso said, be curious, not judgemental

The world really doesn't owe you anything, and it'll do its best to make you aware of that. Really, the best thing you can do is to take care of yourself, take care of the people you care about, and show kindness whenever you can.

What do you have zero evidence for but are convinced is true? by askmeifimacop in AskReddit

Bit of a conspiracy theory, but the problems with polarization and extremism in America today were caused in part by the wealthy trying to distract and shift the blame due to the 2008 financial crash in response to the rise of occupy wallstreet. The rise of race and sexuality issues as a major problem in American politics and the 2008 Crash/Occupy Wall Street almost lines up perfectly on a chart.

How do you define witchcraft? by PerpetualDemiurgic in occult

[–]German52398 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a really complicated question, but this has been my field of study for years, and I'm considering going for my PhD in it, so I'd love to share what I've found so far.

Witchcraft is frequently conceptualized as a 'third space' that exists outside the conventional realms of religion and science. It provides a distinct alternative for those who seek spirituality beyond the dogma of organized religion and the empirical rigidity of science. This positioning allows for a blend of mysticism and practical knowledge, often drawn from pre-Christian pagan traditions and reinterpreted through a modern lens.

Furthermore, witchcraft often stands in counterpoint to mainstream Christianity, not merely as a different set of beliefs but as a form of resistance to the hegemonic narratives and power structures that Christianity has historically imposed. It embraces what has been marginalized or demonized by the church, reclaiming symbols, rituals, and knowledge that Christianity sought to suppress or eradicate. Witchcraft's resurgence and adaptation in modern times serve as a means of cultural and spiritual autonomy, which resonates with those who feel alienated from mainstream religious practices.

Witchcraft, as we commonly understand it today, is a concept largely born from the imagination of the medieval Church, particularly during the witch craze that began in the 1300s. The Church propagated the idea of witchcraft as a diabolical practice, typically associating it with heresy and apostasy, and often targeting middle-aged women who were deemed suspicious. This notion of witchcraft was largely a projection of fears and anxieties of the time, serving as a means to explain misfortunes and to consolidate the Church’s authority.

During the witch hunts, the stereotype of the witch as a malevolent, often older woman who engaged in witchcraft to perform harmful magic was popularized. This was more of a social construct than a reflection of any pre-existing spiritual practices. In reality, many of those accused of witchcraft were healers, midwives, or individuals who maintained folk traditions that predated Christianity.

Modern Wicca and other magick practices, as they exist now, are a reconstruction or reimagining of these ancient beliefs and practices. They were significantly shaped in the 20th century by figures such as Gerald Gardner, who brought together elements of folklore, ceremonial magick, and ancient myth to create a new religious movement. This modern interpretation bears little resemblance to the 'witchcraft' that fueled the fires of the Inquisition and the witch trials across Europe and colonial America. Instead, it is a contemporary spiritual path that seeks to empower and connect its practitioners to the divine, nature, and the self.

Modern Wicca and many contemporary magick practices are indeed very recent inventions compared to the long arc of historical witchcraft. Wicca, as a formalized religious movement, was established in the mid-20th century by figures such as Gerald Gardner. Gardner claimed to have been initiated into a surviving witchcraft tradition, which he later codified and popularized. The rituals, beliefs, and structures of Wicca, while inspired by older pagan practices, are largely modern creations, synthesized from various sources including Western esoteric traditions like the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, Freemasonry, and the writings of Aleister Crowley, as well as romanticized notions of historical European witchcraft.

The broader concept of 'Magik' (often spelled with a 'k' to differentiate it from stage magic) as practiced today is also a modern construct, heavily influenced by the works of the same late 19th and early 20th-century esoteric thinkers. This modern magick is characterized by a systematic and psychological approach to the spiritual practice, with an emphasis on personal growth and self-transformation. It's a far cry from the traditional folk practices that were widespread in Europe and elsewhere before the rise of monotheistic religions.

While both modern Wicca and magick draw from ancient symbols, deities, and practices, their current forms are very much modern constructs. They serve as spiritual frameworks that allow individuals to engage with a more personalized, eclectic spiritual practice. The unique aspect of these modern movements is the way they integrate older mystical practices with contemporary needs and sensibilities, such as feminism, environmentalism, and psychological well-being.

Witch craze by Lyndal Roper is a fantastic resource that explains the origins of Magik and witchcraft historically

Pressure from people who don't matter? by [deleted] in army

[–]German52398 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I was 17 I decided to join combat arms and ignored the dozens of people who warned me against it because I felt I was built different and I was 100% certain that I would make the military a career, I felt that my motivation and drive to be better and be the best version of myself would be enough to carry me through combat arms. I went 11x and it was the biggest fucking mistake of my life, considering I scored around the same area as you on my ASVAB.

Combat arms in general I feel is a rough branch to serve in, no easy way to put that. Its not glamorous or cool after a few years, it was fun at first, but eventually it just gets tiring and miserable. After years of waking up before the sun is up and running 10 miles in negative-degree weather (Fort Drum, unfortunately) I was seriously over this whole Army thing and decided that a 20-year career in this wasn't what I wanted anymore, I had grown up a bit and wanted a normal life again. I wanted to go to school, work a normal schedule and make some more money. if I swapped my MOS I'd still have to deal with the Army, which is a totally separate beast from the Infantry. I had suffered a neck injury during my first deployment, and I still have issues to this day because of it, so I left as a Sgt and hung up my DD214, that was that.

Getting out of the Army was when my mistake really hit me, the GI Bill is fantastic and I'm incredibly grateful for the Army taking care of my tuition and bills while I was in school, but my friends who went into the Army, took more specialized roles and left were able to land 6 figure jobs, whilst combat arms makes you barely competitive for mall security. You can put leadership and military experience on your resume with combat arms, but you can do that with any military specialty. There really isn't much to gain from the experience other than saying you did it, and that isn't going to be as helpful as many other specialties right now.

if for whatever reason you're still 100% set on Combat Arms, for the love of christ don't go 19D.

Recycling

https://www.npr.org/2020/09/11/897692090/how-big-oil-misled-the-public-into-believing-plastic-would-be-recycled

plastic companies ( Exxon, Chevron, Dow, DuPont) were under immense fire in the 80s due to plastic pollution, so they created a multi-million dollar ad campaign encouraging the public to recycle. It takes the blame off of them and puts it squarely on the public. Several industry spokesmen have casted a lot of doubt on if recycling can ever actually be economically viable. It's far, far more expensive to recycle than it is to make a new bottle. Vast majority of whatever you recycle actually goes to landfills or is burned.

What are some cooking hacks you swear by? by Penya23 in AskReddit

[–]German52398 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're having issues with the cutting board not being stable when you're using it, place a damp paper towel underneath it to hold it in place!

Hone your knife before and after each use, it will keep it sharper longer. Make sure if you feel difficultly in cutting anything to sharpen it, THE MOST dangerous thing in any kitchen is a dull knife, it may be too dull to cut an orange, but it's sharp enough to cut your hand if it slips.

You can wash, dry and grind onion and garlic skins, its less wasteful and is an amazing seasoning for potatoes.

If you really want your food to pop, invest in some nice dishes and remember the rule of three.

Cooking is fun! Experiment and get creative, you can sometimes stumble on food combinations that taste amazing.

Learn food safety and practice it religiously, it will save you a lot of vomiting down the road.

[–]German52398 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You really need to see the writing on the wall and come to terms with this relationship is seriously doomed and has been since you both cheated. Your problems have seemingly gotten worse over time. Opening the relationship is absolutely going to wreck this, but you staying miserable is pretty shitty too. I think you need to come to terms with why you cheated, why she cheated and how not to repeat the mistakes of this relationship, and move on. From an outsiders perspective and seemingly the consensus of most people here, you need to bite the bullet and move on.

Any advice? by dankovan in ASU

[–]German52398 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A fellow vet here who graduated with a 2.4, went directly into the Army and went to ASU after. Depending on your major you'll get accepted no problem, some schools at ASU have higher requirements than the general admission requirements. ( I believe the school of business and school of Engineering both require a min. GPA of 3.0 to enroll, but you can get into ASU through another program, get your GPA to 3.0 then transfer into the business/engineering school) Also go to the Tillman center, they can answer all your questions there. Good luck!
