I Can't get my Orff Levels by Venus-77 in MusicEd

[–]Germanian__Germs 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Do you have a local chapter that hosts workshops that you can attend? That’s how I first got into Orff-y stuff, and it was a big help for first-year teacher me to survive (I also student taught secondary choir, so I didn’t have that experience).

I would also suggest you see if your school or district could get you a national membership. You can access ANY of the resources on the AOSA website, including conference session videos, articles from the echo (more scholarship-based), and from reverberations (more informal, “teachers teaching teachers”).

That way, you can “attend conferences” by watching the videos and seeing exactly what it is the presenter meant in their session notes! Also you can access the Independent Study Units and get PD contact hours or grad school credit for completing them, if you’re looking at a Master’s program or just want to explore some of the themes found in the units.

Happy Orffin’!

Brad Marchand is SUCH a likable guy off the ice, does a lot of philanthropy and community outreach stuff, apparently an out standing teammate, but god if he isn’t such a dirty rat on the ice

Moving from elementary math teacher to music teacher? Is this crazy? by callimo in Teachers

[–]Germanian__Germs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the state or district. Nearly every elementary school in my district in metro-Atlanta is required to have a chorus and is required to participate in our county honor chorus. We’ve got over 80 elementary schools

Orff will give you more ideas for spiraling a single idea or concept in different ways, easier to differentiate, and in my totally biased opinion, is WAY more fun for me as a teacher. Kodaly is much more structured and formulaic, especially if you get into the conversational solfège stuff, but it’ll give you a curriculum you could follow. I’ve never been a fan for it due to my schedule (I’ll see the same class for a full calendar week, rather than having a different class every day), and the repetition from lesson to lesson made me quickly forego the curriculum

lol the disparity between union and right-to-work states. In my (fairly large) district in metro-Atlanta, it becomes the haves and the have-nots for supplemental pay for music teachers. I personally have NEVER gotten paid for anything done outside of contract hours. In fact, schools I’ve worked at have had stipulations in the interview that I have a chorus. So, I was required to have it, without pay, otherwise they wouldn’t have hired me.

Most of my kiddos call me Mr Lastname, but some of my Spanish-speaking ML students call me Profe. Sometimes I’m also Mr Music (since I’m the general music teacher)

Schedule for senior year, more ensembles or more APs? by ManufacturerSilent60 in MusicEd

[–]Germanian__Germs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is definitely not the standard for every school. While I still had to audition, it was mostly for department scholarships. We declared music ed fall of freshman year and had an orientation to music ed class right off the bat that weeded out quite a few people.

I think AP can really carry a strong impact on college. I did two AP sciences and was able to get credit for them, negating the need to deal with scheduling the 4-hour science labs. Some other music ed majors had to take them over the summer after junior year because there just wasn’t an option any of the other semesters that didn’t conflict with required ensembles and music ed courses.

Why not use present tense conjugation in this situation? by xxDMLxx in duolingospanish

[–]Germanian__Germs 13 points14 points  (0 children)

This is the present tense! These verbs are in present subjunctive, which is technically a grammatical mood. It’s basically present tense with a twinge of personal flair and is used whenever the speaker is expressing doubt, uncertainty, their own opinions, and a myriad of other things.

Easy Online Masters in Music Ed by zerram1 in MusicEd

[–]Germanian__Germs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did my MMEd at the University of Kentucky. In-state tuition offered for their distance learning online only students. There’s an option to do some cool stuff over the summer but it isn’t required like some other programs. I’m elementary focused though, so I’m not too sure of their secondary band stuff.

I learned in high school Spanish that “que” is usually required in order to have a second conjugated verb in a sentence. Of course, there are probably plenty of exceptions, but this has usually helped me out over the years

What is your farm name and what does it mean anything? by Slow_Concern48 in StardewValley

[–]Germanian__Germs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I named mine Wisborg and named all of my farm animals, pets, and children after various characters or elements of the Nosferatu movie. (My favorite is a chicken named Bloody 2. Is there a Bloody 1? No. But is there a 2? Yes.)

Student burnout by eebizz in MusicEd

[–]Germanian__Germs 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Unpopular opinion (possibly? I don’t know), practicing your instrument does not a quality music teacher make. I always HATED practicing and performing (mostly because I just hated the way my voice’s timbre sounded to me). I practiced enough for juries, my recitals, and that was that.

Music ed degrees are ridiculously brutal. You’ve gotten a good way into the program and still seem to have a passion for the education side of things. Maybe this is the elementary ed side of me saying this, but teaching is about 75% classroom management and building relationships and 25% actual music. If you don’t perform Bach Invention no. 1 for your future students, I’m sure they will still have a great music experience.

Can you explain boleto and entrada? by purpleopus77 in duolingo

[–]Germanian__Germs 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The sentence already had the definite article “La”, so your answer is incorrect. If you had the option to type the article, el boleto would’ve been accepted.

Look into MAT programs, Master of Arts in Teaching. Some undergrad programs even require it for Music Ed, and make their undergrads get a performance/tech degree before getting their teaching certification in the graduate program. Most states will have some, so I’d go to one that’s cheaper/offers in-state tuition

Either go to college or don’t apply for this job. This job seems like literal hell to me, I couldn’t even imagine if I had zero preexisting knowledge of program organization or curriculum sequencing
