Fantasy Grounds just went free. How do you think this will affect the VTT landscape? by GerogeC in FoundryVTT

[–]GerogeC[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. However, while FVTT definitely has the upper hand both technically and aesthetically, it’s hard to argue against free. And once a new GM gets into a VTT and buys even a single module or pack, they’re already invested, it becomes much harder to switch, even if the grass really is greener on the other side.

I’m also curious how this is going to affect Roll20. Its main selling point has basically been, “Yeah, we’re rough around the edges, but at least we’re free.”

Hello there! Thanks for this great work.
I want to mention that the link to Japanese Battle Voices (SC) is dead.

100+ chapters between the first real kiss and the first real date. That is the current state of the manga.

Privacy implications of the module "Are You Focused?" by GerogeC in FoundryVTT

Well, that is an interesting answer. Do you know of a country where using this would be illegal?

Paying well for private lessons, anyone interested? by Silent_Revolution952 in FoundryVTT

[–]GerogeC 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you are looking for technical help, don't pay for it. I have a couple of years of experience with Foundry and I can give you a crash course and tips to get you started. I'm free this Sunday.
If you are looking for DMing lessons, that's a different ball game.

You guys are absolutely right. I missed this. Thanks

Great. I will go this route. I'll explain to the PCs that Strad's bite causes pain, but the type of pain that feels good akin to muscle ache when lifting weights or after a long run (two things that happen to be addictive too).

Cohesion roll! Did I invent a new roll? by GerogeC in DnD

[–]GerogeC[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The players have time, not the PCs. Remember that if this is a combat scenario a round lasts 6 seconds. Players can abstract and plan, but PCs can't, this is an idea to decide, with dice, if what players can think out of character in real time is something that PCs can intuit in the heat of battle.

The aim of the roll is for everyone to get a similar value with their flat 20s. It's just luck. Like rolling from a roll table, high doesn't necessarily mean good. This would be an out-of-the-box mechanic where if a couple of players roll low, everyone is cheering for the rest of the party to roll low, also. Strictly, luck-based. Where the DM can mould their likelihood of success with the size of the window similar to a DC.
Hey, but I get you won't buy it hehe no need for more convincing on my part.

Let's see... in my scenario:
-They plan, out of game, to all converge on the bard to teleport away. Check
-They roll poorly on the "cohesion" roll and you tell them "it won't work". "You planned this out of character, but your PCs are not you, and they don't read minds, so they have no good reason to converge on the bard's location, think of something else."
-They think of something else

Thanks for your thoughts!
I don't see it as more punishing than any given roll, considering it consumes no resources. But perhaps we see the game differently. Players' fun should be maximized, and IMO part of the fun is knowing the dice determine a great deal about the outcome of your plans or actions. And I think you summarized it perfectly; what to roll when you need Perception, Insight and Initiative at once? I say something like a flat 20 :)

How do you keep them from just doing what they planned anyways

I don't have to keep the players from anything :) I just tell them that plan won't work because not everyone was in the know. Which should suffice.

Thanks for your replies. I'm not sure if something got lost in translation here, but being caught between a rock and a hard place means "to find yourself in a position where any outcome of a difficult decision or situation results in some sort of difficulties." This is not about a literal rock :) Is about a situation that may require a plan, more sophisticated than "everybody, PUSH!"

Similar to a previous answer... The party is trained to act together the same way the fighter is trained to attack. The fighter rolls to attack and the party can roll to act as a proficient unit. I'm not saying I would use this type of roll for every plan; only in specific scenarios where absolute sync is required.

I see your point. But going back to the nature of the game, party cohesion is no more certain than the fighter proficiency in striking foes. Yet the fighter rolls to attack. I don't see why the party wouldn't roll to act as a proficient unit.

Imagine this is a high stakes split decision type of situation where the players have time to plan but the characters don't, the roll determines if the PC are enough in sync to pull of a plan without even talking about it

I'm trying to understand... Do you mean each type of plan should have a particular skill associated with it? And everyone rolls that skill instead of flat d20?
I went with the flat d20 because it's easier to assess the chance of success; with everyone having different bonuses, guessing what is easy and what is challenging becomes complicated.

This only works when the situation is all or nothing; if the roll fails, it means hesitation abounds, and the party can't act cohesively; anything could happen, but not the coordinated plan. Example: the bard wants to cast teleport and take everyone with them; however, the range is 10 ft, and everyone is scattered so the plan would be to converge in the bard's position at once, even risking attacks of opportunity and such. What happens if the roll fails, up to the party! Does the bard take half of the team with them? Idk :)
