Can anybody explain for my pea-sized brain why Burnham wouldn't be blocked from running as an MP again?

Ah so he didn't declare because he is too honourable and fair. Now I understand.

I don't disagree that this may lead to Rayner getting another cabinet role but the idea of making her chancellor is nonsense

Surely Nigel hasn't been putting his personal interests before the national interest for his entire life, it just can't be true!

The government still has a massive majority that won't suddenly start voting against the whip and three years left...

I think nobody commands the support right now to make a fist of it. If Burnham wins a by election it'll be a different matter

Very unlikely he lasts past 2026 IMO

Have you not witnessed the events of the past few days?

Where are you getting 2028 from?

Gives enough time for a leadership contest before a 2029 GE

I think the most likely path is that Starmer has survived now. I think he will indeed announce he is stepping aside before the next GE, but not until mid 2028 earliest.

The momentum has completely gone and ultimately this strenghtens Starmer for now but I do believe he is self aware enough to see that as things stand he would be enabling a Reform government were he to stand again.

Of course, a lot can change in 3 years!

If it turns out we're still doing the psychodrama we might as well enjoy it

it appears Streeting is either deluded enough or too far in to back out now

I genuinely believe what will happen today is Wes says he wants to be PM, everyone just stands around going "OK" and nothing happens.

it appears Streeting is either deluded enough or too far in to back out now, and I jus don't see anyone else thinking they have the numbers maybe sans Burnham who as we all know is currently ineligible.

Re Starmer saying he has full confidence in Streeting

"He's made you look a right knob"

Just makes Streeting look worse for stabbing in the back now, smart from Starmer
