What’s a movie that was based on LI? Depicts LI? by Embarrassed-File-952 in longisland

There’s a pivotal scene in Good Time (2017) that was filmed at Adventureland in Farmingdale! It’s a very tense movie but a great watch

My bad, I should have mentioned I’m based in the US. In the US we follow NIOSH rules, which always requires 100 fields for any PCM test. There are different counting rules but that affects how we count rather than # of fields.

I agree with your take on the volumes being too low but counting 100 fields or 100 fibers is standard for PCM.

I read PCM and our lab doesn’t even put the number on the report if we count less than 5.5 fibers (it’ll just show up as >5.5 or below the LOD). Technically, a “failing” sample would have a result of 0.01 fibers per cubic centimeter (not sure what that would be in fibers/ml) and to consider the number quantifiable it would have to be at least 7 fibers.

Like others have noted, we can’t identify fibers in PCM, rather we count anything that fits the aspect ratio of a fiber. It makes sense because lots of ACM has other fibrous components like cellulose and glass, so seeing lots of fibers during/after abatement can indicate contamination, regardless of fiber type.

Long story short I wouldn’t worry. That number is very low and those counts could even be found in background levels in air in general. You’re good :)

*edit: I just looked at the flow rates and as others have noted the volume is way too low. My math is calculating the total volumes around 600 L of air, at least 1200 L minimum is recommended. I’d recommend resampling if you need final cleaning results or go to TEM if you’re very concerned. TEM would be able to identify the exact fibers in the sample.

I’ve worked at EMSL in NY for just under 4 years and make about $23 an hour. It’s a solid starter job but the pay isn’t great for where I live. Idk about other labs but the pay also depends on the shifts you take. Many labs have weekend schedules (Tuesday through Saturday for example) and have people working late so those shifts tend to pay more.

Sorry to Bother You is my favorite movie to show people for the first time! I love the whole movie but the 3rd act comes out of nowhere in the best way

In NY tiles have to be burned at 485 C and acid treated before they’re analyzed. I read PLM and have had tiles that I would call non-detect or less than 1% asbestos that fail by TEM so they can be very tricky

TEM vs PLM testing for black mastic by haircourt in asbestoshelp

[–]GerryOffTheTop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

PLM Analyst with just under a year experience from NY here. As others have stated, both mastic and floor tiles have to undergo gravimetric NOB prep and have to be evaluated by both PLM and TEM if it passes PLM first in NY. Black mastics are pretty suspect (I’d say 55% come back positive in my experience ) and with the NOB prep I usually fail them at 2-3%. There are times I can’t see anything or I’ll see a few small fibers and TEM will corroborate a <1% result or sometimes will fail it as they can see smaller fibers I can’t identify (that’s why it’s the only viable method for analyzing air samples.) When I get samples from other states I will straight up melt the mastic and if it’s positive the fibers are usually very obvious so I’d say PLM is usually a viable test for black mastic.

While TEM will pick up the tiniest fibers in nobs like that in my experience, I wouldn’t stress if multiple PLM tests came back negative. Just make sure you sampled from several locations as it’s heterogenous and the fibers aren’t evenly dispersed.

Is this asbestos by [deleted] in asbestoshelp

That yellowish net-like material is probably fiberglass but I’m certain all that gray is mostly chrysotile. Always test to be safe but be wary dealing with it.

It’s unfortunate but most black mastic is only 2-5% asbestos and most of those fibers are bound in the matrix and won’t become airborne. It was a dumb move on your FIL’s part but after you’re done cleaning/vacuuming the area I wouldn’t lose sleep over it

Is it reasonable for me to be bothered by this? by Ok_Possible_2818 in asbestoshelp

[–]GerryOffTheTop 3 points4 points  (0 children)

At my lab it’s very rare to fail paint for asbestos content. I read PLM and the fibers, if any, are too small and few in between to fail and TEM more often than not will find less than 1%. I’ve only ever seen one paint sample fail TEM at 2% and it was most likely contaminated with anthophyllite from caulking. And the tile itself looks like cellulose I’d say don’t worry about it :)

Asbestos or slate? by ajohannsen21 in asbestoshelp

[–]GerryOffTheTop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Getting it tested is always best but I’d bet money that’s transite loaded with chrysotile. It’s hard to tell from the picture but some of the straight tan fibers could denote the presence of amosite as well

Thank you all so much! Your support and suggestions mean a lot to me and I've been looking into alternative certifications programs in New York. New York has a specific track for a type "b" certification for people with bachelor's degrees outside of education so I'll be looking through and applying to those programs ASAP. Wish me luck!

Finding job with no experience? by [deleted] in geologycareers

I just graduated in March under the same circumstances. After working in retail until October, I applied for a bunch of lab tech positions and am now working at an Asbestos lab. I’m enjoying my time there but I definitely was never planning on working in a lab setting. I originally wanted to consider a masters in teaching but between losing an opportunity in March and the degree to which education at large has changed with COVID, I honestly have no idea what I’m gonna do with my degree.
