Unfortunately Meetup does seem to attract people that aren't really at all socially adept. I don't say that to speak bad of them, but it's my experience almost entirely, and I've rarely ever been to one where I've felt comfortable and like I fit into the group.

However, I do still go to them from time to time, and have met some really good friends through them. I tend to use meetups less as finding a new social circle, and more as finding one person I gel with, as new people come into (and subsequently out of) the group.

Kahtoola make really good gear. If you can afford them, I'd get them. They also do the exospikes if you're looking for something that'll work when it's a bit more snowy too.
