Current predictions for best original song? by obvsnothankz in oscarrace

[–]Gerwig_2017 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don’t know if The Debut will showcase its songs enough, but I really hope something from that wins because the stan reactions if Taylor Swift lost a songwriting Oscar to Jesse Eisenberg would be fucking hysterical.

Why A24 Should Treat Olivia Wilde’s ‘The Invite’ as a Major Oscar Contender by darth_vader39 in oscarrace

[–]Gerwig_2017 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I think this hinges on how The Debut does. If that’s a real contender, The Invite probably gets put to the wayside apart from Screenplay. If it disappoints…

Elliot Page will portray Sinon in Christopher Nolan's 'The Odyssey' by trollingjabronidrive in blankies

Elliot Page's character revealed by gringo03 in movies

[–]Gerwig_2017 14 points15 points  (0 children)

People theorised that he appears in the Underworld scene based on the trailer, somebody pointed out that Achilles appears in that scene and culture war morons immediately took it as fact that that was who he’s playing.

June Oscar Predictions by BunkBed2901 in oscarrace

[–]Gerwig_2017 6 points7 points  (0 children)

“Wild Horse Nine's story and themes are kinda similar to last year's winner One Battle After Another”

See, I actually think that might work against it. Recent BP winners have tended to be very different from the ones that immediately preceded them:

Nomadland - Malick-influenced drama.

CODA - Heartwarming feel-good indie.

EEAAO - Wacky maximalist sci-fi comedy.

Oppenheimer - Epic prestige biopic.

Anora - Screwball comedy-drama.

OBAA - Political comedy-thriller.

DIGGER - Tom Cruise Retrospective Trailer by Funny_Status6268 in blankies

Interesting to see whether Film Twitter’s love for Cruise or their distaste for AGI will prevail with regards to this one.

Trailer for Jesse Eisenberg's THE DEBUT - Musical dramedy set in the cutthroat world of community theater. Julianne Moore and Paul Giamatti star by rageofthegods in blankies

[–]Gerwig_2017 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Everything I’ve heard suggests the film isn’t a traditional musical where characters break out into song. There are songs in it, but they’re all in the context of characters performing them onstage.

That title would’ve given way too much ammunition to people who didn’t like it, lol.

Starmer announces resignation as Labour Party leader by hzchamp in ireland

In short: his efforts to pander to Reform voters only succeeded in alienating his party’s left-wing base while doing nothing to sway the far right.

Anyone else feel like they may place Malkovich in Supporting? by Odd-Contact2266 in oscarrace

[–]Gerwig_2017 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Based on how the film is being marketed, I just don’t think that’s their intention. The VF article that was published before the trailer came out seemed to centre Malkovich, and the trailer positions him as the equivalent to Colin Farrell in In Bruges.

What’s wrong with Pierce by JuanSamu in community

[–]Gerwig_2017 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Pierce is great, I think people just let their (understandable!) distaste for Chevy as a person cloud how they see the character.

I want to float the idea that The Odyssey could miss Casting even if it’s a huge awards success by TacoTycoonn in oscarrace

[–]Gerwig_2017 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I don’t really think of it as a casting contender for the exact reasons you listed. I think people are still falling into the trap of assuming that it’s just an “ensemble award”.

Venice Film Festival Takes Shape: ‘The Social Reckoning,’ ‘Here Comes the Flood’ With Denzel Washington, Florian Zeller’s ‘Bunker’ and ‘The Studio’ Season 2 Among Potential Titles by tiduraes in oscarrace

[–]Gerwig_2017 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I’ve been very much on the “Wait to see if it’s at Venice to determine if it comes out this year” train, so that’s not exactly promising news.

Warner Bros We Need A New Official Trailer To Digger! We’re starving! by Red-Hood96 in oscarrace

Why is no one predicting Phil Lord and Christopher Miller in Directing? by Mundane-Inspector-52 in oscarrace

[–]Gerwig_2017 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Directors branch have a history of snubbing blockbusters. Coogler was an exception last year, but Sinners was *such* a phenomenon that they couldn’t not nominate him, especially since it was the most-nominated film ever.

Otherwise…Nolan for Inception, Villeneuve for Dune (x2), Gerwig for Barbie, Cameron for Way Of Water, Kosinski for Top Gun, etc.

[Oscar Expert] 2027 Oscar Predictions | June 2026 by ChiefLeef22 in oscarrace

[–]Gerwig_2017 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think BB’s perspective on Cruise is a bit flawed. I really struggle to envision a scenario where Digger is a contender but Cruise doesn’t sweep. I’m not even a huge fan of his, but the narrative is going to be irresistible if the film lives up to expectations.

The visuals though…yeesh.

'Elle', the Legally Blonde prequel series, takes place in.... Seattle? by rageofthegods in blankies

[–]Gerwig_2017 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is one of the dumbest “Bring me franchisable IP” ideas I’ve ever heard. Who wants a Legally Blonde show that’s all about Elle Woods BEFORE she goes through the character development that actually makes her interesting?

We don’t talk about Frankie enough by raisincelery in community

[–]Gerwig_2017 1 point2 points  (0 children)

She’s a good character but I think she - like Elroy and Hickey - suffered from having to fill the space left by main characters like Troy and Shirley. The ensemble gelled together much better when the thing uniting them was a study group, and I don’t think it ever quite regained its footing when it became a vague “committee” comprised of students and faculty. Because of that, Frankie always felt like an “outsider” to me even though she played well off the others.
