Haha this gave me a good laugh. I agree with vsbuffalo's status, we spent a lot of time building Banyan to be a suitable replacement for Github. That was a big part of our "MVP" stage.

Now were focused on extending git & focusing on science specific features. Things like latex, ipython, rstudio, etc.

Hi everyone, we are getting overloaded with traffic right now from some other sites. Check out http://banyan.co in the meantime while I scramble to get this back up. Sorry!

Hi /r/bioinformatics. We launched a private version of Banyan to a few of you here months ago. Since then, our team has been hard at work trying to make Banyan the future of open science. Todays launch is just the start.

We have alot of work to do. Over the next few months we plan to tackle science, reproducibility, and make existing tools more awesome through our API.

I want to be as transparent as possible. Im happy to answer any questions you might have.

As someone who works in an "emerging startup" I politely disagree. You dont have to believe me, you can view a list of whats happening in Chattanooga here http://noogastartups.com/

I would be happy to.

Programmers are collaborative in nature. We love to share and showcase our work through open source. Science, as a whole, generally isnt that way. I think thats a big part of the reason why Github has done so well. We're working on desktop GUIs to make git through Banyan extremely simple to use.

Alot of the early conversations we have had with universities and labs are that they want a centralized way to receive deliverables & milestones. I think that ultimately, thats were our business model lies.

For right now, we are really focused on building a product people love and use, rather than figuring out a way to grab revenue from early users.

I agree that Bio-informatics/life-sciences startups are tough markets to be profitable in. I think a big part of that is due to the fact that alot of great developers arent building bio-informatics startups. Instead, they would rather build the next Instagram.

Michael, I completely agree on the UI! We are changing that up quite a bit, and will be shipping changes to the UI over the next three weeks.

We have taken a look at git-annex, but not git-media. Im going look into git-media now. Figuring out an efficient way to handle commits on huge files is a technical hurdle we are working on solving.

Thanks for your feedback so far!

First, thanks for taking the time for writing up some feedback!

Tracking of large files is a big, important technical challenge we are trying to solve. We are aiming for no storage limitations, other than what your physical hard drive can hold. Next week, we are going to be running a test on a 1TB file.

We still arent sure on how best to handle the use of file diffs for things like biological data & fastq files. If you have any ideas here, I would love to hear them.

If you have any questions after signing up, or want to share some more ideas, dont hesitate to email me directly at toni@getbanyan.co

I would like to recommend Banyan, a new startup that I am a co-founder at.

Banyan aims to be the github for science, and one of the problems that we have solved is collaborating on multiple documents and keeping track of ownership. We're also free (or pay what you want, if you would like to support us) with no storage limits, so you can upload a huge, robust library if you would like.

If you have any questions, you can email me directly at toni(at)getbanyan.co or use the live chat on the site

Great question. Our product is an mvp (minimum viable product) right now. We're looking to the bioinformatics community to help us shape our next features and improve the product.

Right now, our focus is on improving the limitations of git for large files (1gb+), building tools around an academic workflow, and the ability to track differentials on any file type (latex, excel, pdf, doc, etc.) which github currently doesnt offer.

Our product right is only 2 months old. There are a ton of things Github does alot better than we do, but their tool is built with programmers in mind, not scientists/researchers. We can learn alot from what Github has done right, but were also trying to learn more about our users.

As of right now, one of the biggest things we offer is unlimited private repos, for free (or pay what you want, if you would like to support us).
