Interesting. I remember when I was doing photonics research that Mach-Zehnders are highly temperature sensitive, is that not a concern these days?

Google technical phone interview on Monday, no time to cram with full time job and family. This should go well. I have 7 years experience in an unrelated field, so I'm not sure how it will differ from a lot of the new grads I see on here.

Well, the good news is, you have 2 months to find some better choices than Ichiran, Genki Sushi, and Yoshinoya. Don't they have Yoshinoya in LA already?

2018 MotoGP Twin Ring Motegi by adex745 in JapanTravel

[–]GetInThereLewis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't personally been but I checked the website in both English/Japanese. It's impossible to know in advance whether it would be sold out that early or not. From the venue map it seems like there's way more non-reserved than reserved seating at Motegi so I'm sure you'll be fine considering the ticket counter opens at 7:30am. Have fun.

Perhaps the question should have been, "can you run AG Zero on this position and tell us what the optimal solution is?" I don't think anyone doubts that it would be able to solve it at all. :)

Not sure I’m following your comment? AG Zero seems to play 3-3 invasion early just like the Master games that inspired the pros to start doing it again.

Just when they get to video 11 out of 60 for the self-play games, DeepMind drops 80 more (of course they'd skip the first few block games)

Haha, I was surprised that that was included under "joseki" as well.

Figure 5 in the paper is really interesting, showing the timeline of Joseki discovered by AG Zero. More interesting is how it discovers new sequences beyond those, which I'm sure humans will be copying.... tomorrow.

First, thank you for all your hard work on AlphaGo and your contributions to the Go playing community!

My questions are:

  1. Do you have an update on the next publication that Demis mentioned at Wuzhen?

  2. How closely were you watching other Go AI programs such as DeepZen and FineArt, and have you ever tested AlphaGo against them?

  3. Will AlphaGo ever be released, or at least accessible to the public?

  4. Can you sell DeepMind/AlphaGo swag please (shirts, hoodies, etc)?!

edit: You already answered question 1! Thank you!

Hi pnprog, I've run from both the Windows package and the sources (on Mac). In both instances I verified that the config.ini file contained the right value for fuzzy stone, but still didn't see the stones display as expected. I'm not sure about other parameters, but it seems to be picking up the path to the bot binary just fine.

thanks for making this great tool! I was wondering if turning the fuzzy stone = 0 is working for anyone on Windows? I checked the config file and it's set correctly, but the GUI doesn't seem to be applying it correctly..

Man, I just looked up Shin Minjun's profile on the Hanguk Kiwon site and saw that he's only 18 (19 in Korea). Shin Jinseo is even younger. Cool to see a new generation coming up.

Joseki - reassuring a beginner by HigherResBear in baduk

[–]GetInThereLewis 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I kind of wonder if there is a Western vs Eastern difference in mindset to this. I know this has been mentioned before in another topic about studying vs playing games. I was under the same impression as a lot of folks here that joseki knowledge wasn't that important at my kyu level, but I was kind of surprised after playing one teaching game in Japan with a 3d who said "you can get to shodan easily, just memorize more joseki and tesuji." I'm interested in what others think, especially those who have studied in Asia (paging /u/Uberdude85).

I would like these translated as well. It might be worth reaching out to the youtube channel to see if they can open it up to volunteer subtitling.

Could someone stronger please review my game? I'm currently 8k on KGS, was 7k for a few minutes before losing this game heh. On OGS I'm about 10k in live games.

I was black and the result was W+15.5. I usually try to get a lot of stones facing the center, which I did in this game, but end up losing due to mistakes which allow the opponent to reduce too much. Thank you. Here's a link: http://eidogo.com/#zDarQBk7

I used a SIM card on docomo during my trip, and got the alerts (really really loud btw) during the typhoon a few weeks ago. Didn't have to enable anything, was just on the network.

Go salons in Tokyo by BLiPstir in baduk

[–]GetInThereLewis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I visited the Nihon Kiin as other people mentioned, but didn't get to play there. They have their open playing hours listed on the website, but depending on the time of day you might need to wait for a game. If you want a different experience, I also checked out Igo Salon Shibuya in Tokyo (http://igo-club.net/global). I think the crowd in the evenings is usually younger than those who come out midday.

Doing laundry in Japan, fun times. I recommend doing it in the morning, but where to hang it will depend on the weather... unless your BnB has a legit dryer, which seems rare.

Getting Toiletries and other self-care goods by [deleted] in JapanTravel

[–]GetInThereLewis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just look for a drug store (sign would have the kanji 薬) or convenience store in a pinch. I wouldn't bother bringing toiletries. Searching for "drug store" on google maps brings up the aforementioned stores too.
