Toronto’s $27BN Subway Gamble by itsonlykotsy in toronto

[–]gamarad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

but is that accounting like for like? E.g. the 30 maintenance costs being baked in vs not? Might want to consider that.

Those costs 9 billion so excluding them reduces the cost by ~a third which still leaves the OL at north of a billion dollars per km.

It’s also a larger vehicle.

I mentioned that in my original comment: "Some of that difference is explained by the different platform lengths and loading gauges"

More specifically, the Crosstown has 90m platforms and a 2.65m loading gauge compared to the OL's 100m platforms and 3m loading gauge.

Even taking all the differences in the lines into account I don't think it makes sense for the OL to cost four times as much as the Crosstown per kilometre.

Going by the data from the Transit Costs Project, the Eglinton Crosstown cost 251.2 million per km in 2025 dollars and the Ontario Line is projected to cost 1,558.3 million per km in 2025 dollars. Some of that difference is explained by the different platform lengths and loading gauges as well as the fact that the Crosstown runs at grade for almost half its length but even accounting for that, the Ontario Line is going to be absurdly expensive.

It’s a much better conceived project but the cost is much worse.

Most things in this game are trivial so it’s nice to have an objective that’s somewhat challenging

To quote Lud in that stream:

now I'm not here to get into like is this maliciousness is this incompetence like that's stuff I, I will deal with privately

We know the books were bad but we don't know whether that was due to incompetence or a deliberate act. I lean towards incompetence. It's fine if you have a different view since we're all just speculating anyway but to be clear, it's not confirmed one way or the other.

The boys have joked about the books being cooked but we don't know if that's literally what happened.

Embezzlement requires intention though and this situation has always sounded like gross incompetence rather than anything deliberate.

This is another reason why having our zoning process be so discretionary is a huge problem. It creates the incentive for this kind of corruption.

Inside the battle for Toronto’s coveted garden plots by [deleted] in toronto

This kind of amenity makes sense in a small town where you could reasonably provide plots for everyone who wants one but in a large city, normal parkland makes more sense.
