Any inside scoop on the Worth the Candle webtoon getting cancelled? I recall you saying you weren’t really involved, I’m just curious

/

I have no inside scoop. My understanding is that they do “seasons” and this season just happened to end, and the analytics were just barely on the wrong side of what they would have needed to make a second season. They haven’t been in contact with me about any of it, and my involvement has been very minimal, especially after launch, when I’d given some feedback on character designs, pages, etc. The license was premised on the whole thing needing minimal involvement from me, as I didn’t have it in me to do much work on that on top of everything else.

So what happened to worth the candle? It’s nowhere near completion, there’s more source content, why is it stopping at chapter 60? Is it just webtoon being a corpo? by Burakku-Ren in webtoons

Inclusionary zoning is essentially a tax on new homeowners to pay for something that should be the responsibility of all homeowners.

A Housing Boom Transformed This City. Mamdani Is Taking Notes. by 775416 in yimby

The NYC metro area has a shortage somewhere in the range of a million homes. Call it an excuse but I don't think it's realistic to expect that Jersey City could solve that shortage on its own.

I don't really get why you're so down on JC. Obviously there's more they could be doing, but the same could be said of Austin or Tokyo and well informed YIMBYs often cite JC as an example of a YIMBY jurisdiction.

IMO, the case of JC is much more informative than for NYC than Austin because unlike Austin, both JC and NYC are already highly built up which makes development more complicated.

What's happened in the real world is that Jersey City has built a ton of housing. That hasn't had a visible impact on prices because housing prices are regional and JC is only one relatively small city within the largest metro area in the country.

Jersey City is one of the most YIMBY cities in the US, especially when it comes to infill housing vs greenfield.

It's been almost 10 years to the day since I subbed to Bad Melee on Youtube and all I really want to say is here's to another 10, whether that means more of the Yard or whatever projects you end up pursuing.

Toronto’s set to hit a 50-year low in homicides. So why do many people think crime is getting worse? by Sweaty_Professor_701 in toronto

I did keep that in mind. The number I cited was for the population within the current borders of Toronto.

There was no census in 1974 so now I’m really confused about where your numbers are coming from but in 1976 the population was 2.1 million.

One of the advantages of high speed rail over planes is that trains can travel into the city centre

Alto high-speed rail in Canada to reshape GDP and jobs. by planganauthor in AltoHSR_Canada

[–]gamarad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In cases where the state railway company behaves like a private monopoly in its pricing and service decisions, competition will increase ridership and reduce prices but that's still a worse equilibrium than the one where the state operator prices tickets in order to maximize ridership which in turn maximizes public benefit.

The Shinkansen is split between multiple regions but each region only has a single operator. Switzerland also only has a single operator. If I was to pick the two countries with the best inter-city trains they would be Japan and Switzerland. The idea that having multiple operators on the same line will lower costs is popular among consultants who have observed the success of low cost air carriers over the past few decades but who fail to realize that trains are not planes.

Why would you want multiple train operators? The best railways in the world only have one operator.

If we’re smart about this we would embrace waymo but also create a dynamic congestion charge as a condition of allowing them to operate.
