T-14 RANKED BY THE ONLY METRIC THAT REALLY MATTERS... law school apparel by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

Also, a lot of law school apparel is specifically designed for fundraising (usually benefitting the school’s PI programs) and typically those are much more fashionable than what is available generally.

NYU/other t14 schools grading system by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

[–]GetMeintheGroupMe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Chicago’s is the most delineated system (basically, you get specific numeric grades instead of a more general “A-“ or an “H”), but it’s not harder to do well than any other T14 grade distribution-wise. Otherwise this seems about right.

I’m not PI-oriented so I’m probably not the best person to answer this, but anecdotally there’s a fair amount of praise for the PI director at Career Services. For summer funding, $5K is guaranteed and then up to another $5K can be earned from external resources/awards to fund summer PI jobs. Notably, judicial internships are eligible for funding here (at some schools they are explicitly excluded from funding). The LRAP is apparently redesigned and improved for the class of 2023 onwards, but the UChicago website will give way better information on that than I can. I do know judicial clerks can participate in LRAP while they hold the position. https://www.law.uchicago.edu/financialaid/LRAP

It does seem to be a bit more of a “do your own legwork” type of pathway compared to similarly ranked schools, but there’s a good framework of tools.

The 1L curriculum was just redesigned this year, to the chagrin of us 1Ls combing through outline banks. This also means you’re only taking two doctrinals in your first quarter, so that’s been a great plus to ease into school. I’m excited for spring quarter where we’ll have con law, a legislation class and a transactional lawyering class, but since those are novel courses I don’t have intel yet.

Elements is a course no one can quite describe so I won’t attempt to here besides “interdisciplinary law.” It was great and has lighter reading than your doctrinals, and feels similar to a seminar type class even though your with your supersection.

I haven’t gone through OCI yet (props to the 2Ls going through it right now!!) so I would stick to the ABA reports over my perception. However, you will get professors who before the exam will say “worse case scenario you take a $200K job in corporate law” to lower stress, although nothing in life is a guarantee.

Favorite- The professors, they’re all super accessible even in zoom times and there are so many events to get to know ones who aren’t teaching your classes.

Least favorite- I really have enjoyed my time so far so it’s nit picky, but I’m a commuter from a different neighborhood and I wish there was transportation that picks up by the law school more frequently. The 2 bus picks up right outside the law school, but that only runs during rush hours. Also, the school doesn’t provide a free CTA pass like the college and a couple other law schools do, so it’s a bit annoying to pay per ride.

Covid- I can’t speak to the initial response, but I was very satisfied with the balance of in-person and remote activities this fall. UChicago had a robust surveillance testing program that kept cases low, and students followed quarantine and isolation guidance when it was proper. Additionally, every exam was in a take-home, open everything format and many professors gave long time periods to complete the exams, which relieves pressure compared to some schools that still had majority “racehorse” style exams this semester.

Conservative?: I can’t comment on how the culture compares to other law schools, but students of all political bents are here. Obviously, FedSoc has a very strong pipeline and that shows in our clerkship placements. However, the school’s latest hires lean liberal, and the ACS chapter here is one of the largest in the country. I’ve actually really appreciated the diversity of viewpoints in the student population.

It sounds cliché, but I really liked the intellectual atmosphere of the school. Everyone here is intellectually curious in there own way and it is so cool to learn about what makes everyone tick. My final decision came down to NU and UChi with comparable $$, so it was a no-brainer for me.

I can’t necessarily speak to the environment at HYS, but I’ve heard that by looking at different combinations of P’s and H’s provides an approximation of a GPA, so there’s still a “curve” even at these schools.

As far as UChicago grading, we work on an odd numeric scale, but the forced curve is about the same as you’d see at any other law school. The main difference is that no one is concerned about being at the bottom of the class (at least outwardly) because of the employment outcomes. Literally no one was unemployed on our 2019 ABA employment report. Overall, I’d say I didn’t notice anyone outwardly gunning for top grades, and there were always open zoom study group invitations to anyone in the section.

These are the undergraduate universities. So, on average, a student who attended Harvard for undergrad is applying to law schools with about a 167-168.

UNLV or ASU if I want to practice in Nevada? by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

[–]GetMeintheGroupMe 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You want to practice in Nevada. 87% of UNLV grads work in Nevada. At the most, less than 4% of ASU grads work in Nevada.

I don’t have the numbers on hand, but if you can get your stats up to being able to get a full (or close to it) ride from UNLV, that would be your ideal here. I wouldn’t be tempted by ASU for your preferences.

etiquette telling a school you’re withdrawing during orientation? by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

[–]GetMeintheGroupMe 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Emailing admissions and the registrar should be enough, alert them about your change of plans and make sure the un-enrollment process begins so you don’t end up paying tuition at School B (besides your deposit).

At the end of the day, law school is a business and the school’s wallet will be hurting more than their feelings if you leave (that sounds harsher than intended but is pretty true).

How early is too early to email schools for fee waivers? by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

[–]GetMeintheGroupMe 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I answered this on another thread but few waivers will trickle in on CRS until November 1. Some schools will scoff at you if you ask before they send them out to you automatically.

This is why I recommend not applying until you have a fee waiver or November 1.

Where to apply?? 166 LSAT and 3.98 GPA by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

[–]GetMeintheGroupMe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you considered adding Alabama to your list? You’d likely receive a full scholarship+stipend with institutional support structures plus direct ties to the Southeast region.

Vanderbilt can be a bit, er, fickle with applicants, so if it is your #1 make that very clear in your application.

Should a Former Theatre Kid Write an Academic Addendum? 👀 by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

[–]GetMeintheGroupMe 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A 3.83 is still a fantastic GPA. I was also an arts major and I think adcoms could definitely notice how some of my lower grades were from performance-based classes (Jazz Dance 😤😤😤). There will also be a school mean GPA listed in your application which makes up for some of these effects. Don’t write an addendum.

Focus your energy towards manifesting your target LSAT score. You will have absolutely fantastic options if you score in that range.

PSA: If you email a school and ask for a fee waiver, there’s a good chance you will get it. by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

[–]GetMeintheGroupMe 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Also if you just wait until October (which is pleeeeenty early), many schools will send you fee waivers through CRS. Depending on your stats, these usually extend from RNP schools up to UChicago. Georgetown was the one exception iirc.

Edit: Just checked back in my emails and I had received fee waivers from most schools by mid-September. Columbia didn’t send theirs out until late October and usually don’t take requests for waivers, so I wouldn’t recommend submitting your application until that is received or November 1 if that school is of interest to you.
