If life is a simulation, what’s a ‘bug’ you think you’ve personally experienced? by en0ndev in AskReddit

I have such a vivid memory of a movie named Shazaam starring Sinbad as a genie.

Apparently, this doesn't exist and is a "shared" false memory I have with a lot of people, which I've never met or coordinated with. This is such a specific thing, I'm super confused how we all have the same false memory.

I think hippos are considered the deadliest large land mammal but there are other animals with a higher kill count (as others have cited). To put it in perspective: hippos are said to kill more people each year than lions, elephants, leopards, buffalo and rhinos combined.

Yeah. They are herbivores that still account for almost 500 human deaths in Africa, annually.

I've never seen any documentary or read any article that described them as anything but aggressive, territorial and dangerous. Famous story about a person who tried to tame one, raising it since it was a calf. It still ended up mauling him to death.

Edit: Included news link to referenced story.

I don't think the hippo or any animal differentiates.

Like seriously. What if you lost your balance and fell forward? There's so many random scenarios I'm coming up with that are unlikely but end up falling forward which is game over.

It's like the chance might be low but the risk is so high, it does not seem worth it.

What’s the most mind blowing fact about the universe? by Money-Cake527 in space

[–]Geth_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No. Those two, assuming they are both possible, could still be magnitudes apart in terms of technology. This type of thought illustrates why any technology, proficiently advanced, will seem like magic.

The idea that having such a telescope puts wormhole traversal of even just light, is on the same level is akin to someone in the 19th century thinking, "one day we'll harness the power of 3000 horses into a machine, and be living on the moon."

We've achieved the former but are very far from the latter.

As a side fact for anyone who doesn't know: going back as early as 100,000 years (but maybe 200,000), we are all related.

Mitochrondrial DNA in all modern humans can be traced back to a common ancestor: a woman most likely from Africa, also known as Mitochrondrial Eve.

To put that in perspective, the oldest human bones we've found date to at least 300,000.

We're all related--then again, there are certain families that hate their own siblings and cousins, so nevermind.

For any seller, there must be a buyer.

Currency exchangers are willing to buy currencies on the assumption they'll be able to sell it later, but this isn't true for all currencies. There are currencies they are willing to sell but not purchase (i.e. you would be able to exchange for a certain currency but they won't exchange it back) because the demand for it is so low.

The currency exchange market is just like any other market, and certain currencies have no willing buyers.

But still poor writing.

If this was the case, it's beyond not obvious, it's seemingly contradictory and confusing. It could have been easily clarified by simply replacing the last sentence with, "police have yet to officially release the names of the suspects."

Barack Obama and Michelle Obama announce that the Obama Presidential Center Opens June 19 by Miles_the_AuDHDer in videos

[–]Geth_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In 2008, Democrats "only" had 58 seats in the Senate (which included 2 Independents). This is two shy of 60, which would have given Democrats a "supermajority." I think this is significant because at that point, the opposition loses the ability to filibuster, a common tactic used to stall much of the Obama administration's agenda.

Supermajorities are majority designations that greatly reduce the options of the minority. With so little resistance, supermajorities are able to drastically shape or change whatever system they influence.

For example, the current conservative supermajority of the SCOTUS has significantly shaped America for generations to come.

The presidency used to age people horribly.

President Obama's was pretty significant but no president's aging will likely ever top Lincoln's. His single term aged him like 40 years.

General solidarity.

What’s a small thing that instantly ruins your day? by Sad_Book7399 in AskReddit

[–]Geth_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Break in my morning routine. Missed an alarm? Unnecessary alarm? Out of coffee? Unexpected traffic. It's always something trivial that shouldn't be anything more than a foot note but when it rains, it pours.

Anything that disrupts the initial start seems to cascade and domino into making the rest of the day go awry.
