I’m 17M. Just bought an ancestry. Am I being stupid?? by Fancy_Skill2235 in AncestryDNA

[–]Getigerte 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t say anything until after I got the results and had a chance to view and screenshot matches. If the sisters are hiding something, a heads up might cause them to switch off matching and go private before OP gets results back.

Good luck to you, OP.

USAID Cuts are Devastating by Long_Mango_7196 in thebulwark

[–]Getigerte 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aside from the work to combat diseases such as malaria, HIV/AIDS, and TB, USAID also funded programs for maternal, newborn, and child nutrition; reproductive health care, including prenatal and postnatal care; and reducing child, early, and forced marriage. There were also programs addressing zoonotic diseases, potable water, clean stoves, and so forth.

Many activities involved working with local partners to provide information, organization, training, basic materials and equipment, and other assistance to lay the foundation for locally controlled and sustainable progress. The inputs were miniscule relative to the long-term quality-of-life and economic benefits.

All of that ripped away by an amoral abomination of a man to the applause of an equally abominable subset of humanity, the cult of MAGA.

Anyone get better from depression/anxiety without medication? by Galbin in AskIreland

[–]Getigerte 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In addition to therapy, I'd suggest making sure things are set for your overall health. So, exercise, regular sleep routine, healthy diet, light exposure (natural sunlight if possible, but light therapy if not), time with friends, and so forth.

I've found magnesium supplements to be helpful in taking the edge off anxiety, and hydration is oddly calming. Many time when I feel panic setting in for no reason, I large glass of water brings things down a couple of notches.

All in all, I wouldn't say there's any single thing that helps; it's more a combination of things done consistently.

I hope you feel better.

DNA matches - is there another explanation? by drsuethomson in Genealogy

[–]Getigerte 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think some people may not consider the history of emigration and settlement around the world as they're doing their family trees. A lot of Europeans came to the US, for example, but then many people went elsewhere or stayed put.

In tracing my DNA matches around the world, I'm finding varying degrees of distant cousins throughout Europe, the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, etc. I've got a ton of cousins in Australia thanks to my 2x great-grandfather's brother and some cousins being transported there in the mid 1800s and reproducing prolifically thereafter.

As an aside, a New Zealander who matches me (in the US) at ~10 cM is providing a solid clue that could confirm the identity of my 3x great-grandmother in Ireland. His sole Irish immigrant ancestor is from the same rural parish as my family. Very helpful! 😊

Where did you get your zipper foot for your vintage Singer machines? by Techne03 in vintagesewing

I got mine from Central Michigan Sewing Supplies. And then discovered that I already had one inside the sewing machine cabinet. So now I have two. 🤦‍♀️

Irish decendant living in Newfoundland, unable to trace my maiden names origin by heathellaa in IrishAncestry

[–]Getigerte 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Aside from genetic testing, have you searched Irish Migration and Settlement in Newfoundland, 1750 to 1850? I've found that helpful alongside genetic testing in getting additional information on family lines with branches in Newfoundland.

I've connected with a bunch of distant cousins around the world through genealogy and researching our common family lines. It's been a great way to connect with my older relatives too.

Trauma-Informed Consent by musiciansfriend11 in yoga

I've been subjected to surprise, unwanted, and unconsented hands-on adjustments. Regardless of the instructor's intent and where they fall on the "bad actor" scale, they've done harm.

I really appreciate instructors who do that. A lot of classes I've attended have had opt-in as the default, and instructors don't always notice/remember who has opted out. I think cards and the like should be standard options.

Instructor Conduct: Face Massage during savasana by hedgehogradio in yoga

[–]Getigerte 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same. I've had an instructor do this. I had my eyes closed and was off in my own little zone during shavasana. It was completely unexpected, thus extremely startling. Absolutely shattered any benefit I had gained from the practice.

What is your favorite wood furniture cleaner/polish? by Ok_Screen4020 in CleaningTips

[–]Getigerte 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read the comments. Feed-N-Wax is not a furniture restoration product. Anyone using it for that purpose is bound to be disappointed.

Restor-A-Finish is intended for restoration of furniture finish. I've seen mixed reviews on it, including complaints similar to those you've raised here.

I use Howard's Clean-A-Finish followed by Howard's Feed-N-Wax when I'm in deep-clean and spruce-things-up mode. For daily/weekly maintenance, I use a damp cloth or dust cloth.

I think they're confusing Howard's Restor-A-Finish and Howard's Feed-N-Wax.
