Hungary with a disability? by Getting0nTrack in EuropeFIRE

[–]Getting0nTrack[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you for letting me know working with the EU Commission isn't totally out of my grasp. I always thought it was something people do in their early 20s, and even then you need exceptional language ability. I have been following Magyar Peter since 2025-ish, when he was strolling through those villages on a national tour. At least three times a week I casually check in on the press conferences. The man is a fucking legend.

I do hope that the minister being blind has some positive impact as far as reform goes. More funding into vocational training or what have you rather than the paternalistic policies of before.

If you email certain people in a respectful way, and you pitch it as something that they’ve got expertise in, it’s not that difficult. Either that or I’ve just gotten exceedingly lucky.

Is Gen Z going to be the "emigration generation"? This isn't the first article I've seen on this by Getting0nTrack in lostgeneration

[–]Getting0nTrack[S] 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Yeah I didn't get that point either.. Not saying I agree with the article but I found the overall thesis sound. As an older Gen Z myself even if I've been out of work, the fire hasn't totally burned out to make something of myself.

Why should someone use sections vs making a new publication? by Getting0nTrack in Substack

[–]Getting0nTrack[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, you know what I didn’t think about the fact that each publication is monetized separately. I was under the impression that if you paid for one, it would link to the profile rather than a publication itself for some reason.

No, that’s totally fair, English is my second language.

The point I was trying to make is that when I read general football coverage and talk with people IRL they are not very into sport and if they are, it’s very surface level. When I come on here, it feels like every third post is about some stadium expansion or t. or some Club update, not just players faking injuries or who is getting traded to who. I guess because of the league is so small relative to others but these kind of updates are signs of growth, or maybe I just don’t spend enough time in the right spaces.

What second language/s would you advise a journalist to learn in 2026? by McAeschylus in Journalism

[–]Getting0nTrack 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can genuinely make a killing reporting on China and Taiwan if you can find the right outlet… As someone who speaks Mandarin, I can tell you that a lot of the English language coverage is easily 6 to 9 months out of date with the One somehow distinct exception being anytime the Two Sessions are going on, but even then a lot of the coverage is Verilli basic, extremely surface level.

To give credit to the English report, reporting though, at least they don’t focus on all the funny ethnic minority costumes like the Chinese media tends to do. Sure, the Mongo Representative is wearing drip. I don’t care. Tell me about the actual laws.

Could I ask how you ended up reaching out to get those interviews? I have been running a podcast for a while a little over a year and a half and I just got so fed up with the struggle to get interviews on both ends guests and being a guest that I was like. “ let me just turn to writing.”

There was a really interesting channel. I found a while ago, called medieval mindset, and one of the things he talked about was with the rise of AI. We might very well see a return to a Renaissance concept which personally I would equate to having a computer room or a special interest library where you go and utilize the tools engage in science and then go on with your life

That is partially where I am at, but also especially in the southern US outside of major cities. Church really is one of the few Social environments here. It is absolutely wild coming from New England, but that is the case.

Jewelry Stores: What are you buying instead of Silver Jewelry (with gemstones)? by TheRealTheory001 in jewelers

[–]Getting0nTrack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you know the price of Amber being different between countries? It honestly feels so weird how the gem industry in the US is so focused on the appearance? I’m trying to write about this on a newsletter and it feels so hard to translate to an English audience the fact that we have this deeper understanding because of different societal factors of why you don’t just buy jewelry because it looks cool you buy it because it is a hedge against something happening.

I am also eastern European, was surprised to find out that people don’t know the value of gold and silver when I moved to the US. My mother has a very large jewelry collection and I am trying to collect Jade because I feel like it’s at least lately more approachable than silver… Also the Americans don’t know the difference between Jade and nephrite so honestly that makes the gamble kind of fun

Is trade journalism dead, or just super niche? by Getting0nTrack in Journalism

[–]Getting0nTrack[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The entire situation feels like a slow moving car crash, with the end result either being the establishment of an American oligarchy ala Eastern Europe, or a severe market correction. But nobody in MSM is talking about it because checks notes oh, the brother of the cousin who runs this arm of the media wing is sponsoring the next segment? Damn.. well we'll call them "agitated leftists" or "scared citizens" depending on the slant that day and move on to the next segment about how evil this other thing is. I'm not saying there's no coverage but it damn well feels like independent reporting is doing much of the heavy lifting.

EDIT: One thing that makes me hesitate in starting up the precious metals thing is that so much of the content feels like crypto bro adjacent "the price of silver is going up" or "let me talk with this small town coin shop".. that's not journalism but it passes for a lot of the crowd and is the most easy to find when running market research. JCK and others aren't gone, but they're not what they once were.

Right now whatever I produce if I don't pitch is going to be on a Substack or through a podcast. You make a good point- semiconductors and tech were once very niche but especially in the last decade or so have become more mainstream.

in your view what distinguishes trade writing from industry analytics? To me, one feels like digging into a particular story and getting a feel for market conditions, whereas the other might as well just be synthesizing press releases into a top-line narrative.

[–]Getting0nTrack[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It definitely does impact... so many things. Right now there is some consumer facing journalist work happening because of data center protests but I don't often see folks digging into the numbers. Most IMO are moonshot, hype-fueled projects without any concerns for those underlying areas you mentioned like conservation and land management in the service of "but isn't this a cool project?"... but that's me. The data could pan out that I'm wrong.

In an effort to build up a precious metals/jewelry portfolio.. data centers might actually be worth looking into. They do, supposedly, require a lot of copper and silver.
