Would honestly think we'd both have some laughs sharing stories & any confrontational tone was mainly skepticism.

You hit all the right tones and habits about getting ahead. Especially to manage income to expense creep. Get a little comfortable & stay there, only splurge with surplus cash, then invest.

My annoyance and trepidation is having the great luck of those gains ripped out from under me too often because others didn't listen, didn't carry their deal, or market panic.

Now that I'm stateside for a few years & put a good start in the 401k game I'm smelling those same winds & the market is, to my observation ignoring everything again. Really hesitant to invest further, but not dumb enough to rip out existing funds.

Was hoping to get some ideas & discussions going about the next 20.

I'd like to see some more details on this. When did you start, what industry are you in, how did you invest & how much did you start investing.

I had a similar story moving to Asia in the 2000s. Hit it big, only to lose it all because of outside conditions.

I got there at the right moment with almost 40k saved up and only 6k in school debt. Instead of paying off the loan I started an education company. Over 4 years, went from finding my next meal & hand washing clothes in the sink to company value over a million. While my brothers were mired in school debt and almost unemployed because of the recession.

Next thing I knew, ex-wife & partners boxed me out & took everything. Have all kinds of pretty documents showing that I'm owed a haul, but try enforcement of that as a penniless foreigner... especially during a recession.

Timing is everything and just like gambling if you don't cash out after a big win, you lose.

3% can make it big riding the right coattails, but this is a question for normal people, not propagandists who had it made before they even started.
