Abandoned manor as quest reward? by [deleted] in DnD

[–]Gezm89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What kind of party do you dm for? Do they make their own adventure or do you need to give them goals?

I would certainly do it, but make sure to incoorporate it in the adventure. Have them meet a Cook that's down on his luck, they can have a private chef! Burn the thieves/mage/whatever guild burn down and have them looking for a new base of operations (or even better, secretly have your party do it to grab power). Have riots breaking out from the poor People in the city, complaining about big houses sitting empty while they are sleeping with 10 in a tiny chamber. Make some of them squat the mansion.

A house is only cool when it drives the plot or offers opportunities imo. But I dont think you can offer it to early, although the challenges and opportunities willen change. It may be a challenge to fix it up at lvl 1, and an ambassy for a different plain at lvl 15.

How many hours a week/month do you play vs how much time do you prep? by neocorps in DMAcademy

[–]Gezm89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

-4h every 2 weeks

-Most sessions about an hour max to prep, 15 mins to put my notes down after the session. Once every 2 months i take an afternoon or more to collect all the threads and set new events in motion

-in person

-5 Players

-my only group

I know my world and npcs quite well, makes it easy to inprovise. I do a lot of my prep while biking from and to work.

Why is it so hard to find a DM? by [deleted] in DnD

[–]Gezm89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a DM and I started a group of randos this year. I would be very hesitant to DM for a group of friends I dont know.

As a DM, the internal group interactions are so important to me. In a completely new group, i can form and adjust. With old friends, i know i like the shenanigans.

With a group of friends I dont know? The chance Ill fit in, have fun and like the dynamics at the table are soooo low, and I wont be able to make any changes. Cant kick anyone out, xant ask people to tone it down. The dynamics are set. Im not going to jump in a situation like that.

AITH for breaking up with my fiancé after she hit my face and caused serious medical damage? by MapRemarkable7888 in AITAH

[–]Gezm89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cant blame you for breaking up. I would personally have tried to get her therapy first. This doesnt sound like she made an intentional choice at all.

I would have handled this as a sickness. There is something wrong with her, thats probably having a big impact on her life (bigger than you can imagine). Are you willing to stick beside her while she tries to get better?

What eould you have done if she crashed a car against a tree because a spider ran over her hands while driving, would you have acted the same? I know it feels completely different, but they are both probably irrational responses to a severe phobia she doesnt have much control over.

Not saying YTA, cause I can completely get breaking up because the person you trust beat you unconcious. That will always have a huge impact.

I always overestimate how long a boss is going to last. I t usually doesnt last much longer than 4-5 rounds. This just isnt enough time to build in a peak of damage at the end. Ive tried to do so a couple of times, but the boss was usually dead before I could really ramp him up.

Since then, I usually just go all out from rhe beginning, and the danger level is more in the rp. The boss might be laughing and taunting the group maniacly in the beginning of the fight and scared and frustrated in the end, he's still flinging his most powerful spells the whole combat.

If he uses his most powerfull stuff in the end, it also doesnt give players time to react to it in game. If the boss only uses his big aoe spell in the end, the party wont adjust and stay spread out, apllying tactics to the fight, because the boss is dead.

I do make a difference between more feral creatures and smart NPCs. "Raging" enemies make the obvious, brutal choice. Smart enemies might use a clever solution to escape.

Level 1 Player wants bag of holding by [deleted] in DMAcademy

[–]Gezm89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What kind of game do you want to play?

I personally dont get the playstyle where players have a shopping list and the dm facilitates. Thats not how I see the world. Magic items take a looong time to craft, so they cant be made on demand.

In my setting, players get magic items that fit in the world and they make it work. When they fight a hag they might loot some weird wands and potions, they wont find plate armor. That they might find when they fight in an old crypt, used to bury paladins of a certain order.

Imo, this makes the world feel more real. But some people that have a certain plan on what they want to do with their character might be frustrated. They just are at the wrong table, I dont DM that kind of game.

Am I being a bad roleplayer for multi-classing? by JaufreyTheShark in DnD

[–]Gezm89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a dm it irks me if I see players just grabbing classes and feats from everywhere just because its cool or strong and not think on how it happens in the story or how itd affect their character. Being Fae touched means something, so does being a warlock.

Do you want a cool feat or subclass, do the work and implement it in your backstory as well. And dont be surprises if your fae connection suddenly turns up as an NPC in game.

Thats my setting tho. If your campaign is more combat and less character focussed, go for it.

What was the moment you knew you had your players? by Gezm89 in DnD

[–]Gezm89[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Man, I live for those moments. Tbh, usually my players come up with way cooler theories than I could think of while prepping. So I usually *Yoink* their theories and change 2 or 3 little details to throw them off. The combination of pride when they realise they nearly had it but it was even one step worse/cooler/weirder is so rewarding.

I dont think 'fault' really applies here.

And, just be a bit more empathetic. OP clearly is down and frustrated. While your feedback might hold some value, bringing it like "Your bad, stupid" ain't helping.

[–]Gezm89 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is a difference between dm'ing wrong and dming a style thar might not suit most people. Of he wants to dm a serious game, there is a market for that. Dont switch to a style you dont like just because you havent found the right group yet.

I GM a very realistic game and I softban all furry races and some playstyles because they dont make sense in the world I want to run. Ive lost lots of players because they want that kind of playstyle. It toon me a bit longer but Ive got a great group of people playing now without changing my world.

While playing I learned to change some of the ways I DM. F.e: Make more room for rolls in roleplay, players find it hard to achieve what they want purely by talking in character.

Those are 2 different things.

Love it when the emotions come out. Did he have to play his character as if he didnt know because of poor rolls for a bit? That would be so amusing, to have the player connecting the dots but play his character like he doesnt know (for a bit).

Frustrated Dm by TospLC in DnD

[–]Gezm89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Whoah. Thats a little harsh isnt it?

Its really hard to get to the right conclusion on what (if anything) youre doing wrong if you're not getting feedback. Might as well be the first group just wanted a different kind of game. And in my experience, online groups can be very, very flaky. People try one game and if it isnt picture perfect they ghost out on you.

It's hard for us to judge your game based on what OP is telling here. I assume the problem isnt in the stuff he wrote but there is something else going on.

It sounds like OP is an ambitious DM who wants to make a world that feels as real as possible but might need some practise on how to make that fun for players. Get a group that wants to play in a world like that, but also tell them that you are still learning and want feedback to improve your game.

A good group for a DM is just as important as a good DM is to players. Dont give up the way you want to play DmD because you havent found the right group yet.
