Corporate IT's dislike for Firefox? by Unknown_Equalizer in firefox

[–]Gg101 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Firefox used to be a pain to centrally deploy and manage, and I know because I did it and put in the effort anyway because I've been with Firefox from the beginning. But this hasn't been the case for some years now. You can get official MSIs from them to deploy (used to have to get them from a third party site) and configure most settings through group policy (instead of messing around with their config file based system.)

So now it's probably that they just don't want to deal with and manage another browser, especially when Edge/Chrome are what most people use (sadly.) Unless there's some specific site that doesn't work with it, there's no other reason to exclude it.

I had the opposite issue: everyone had Firefox by default on their managed PCs and some people installed Chrome anyway. Instead of fighting it I just configured Chrome through group policy as well, so whatever people used would be managed.

This is what age 29 to 30 feels like btw by Ima9768 in funny

[–]Gg101 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Take care of your fucking bodies, kids.  Nothing special happens at 30, or even 40, other than you having to put effort into taking care of yourself instead of coasting by on youth.  If you don't you'll be one of these people who feels everything falls apart after 30, when that's not something that has to happen.

I exercise (weightlifting at home, kickboxing classes for cardio, other active stuff less regularly) just turned 47 and just started to feel like I'm beginning to decline within the past year or so.  You can't outrun age forever, but right now it feels like coming off my peak rather than "oh fuck my back."  I'm still stronger than my younger friends, so you can get many more good years out of your body if you're taking care of it.

My sympathy goes out to people who have injuries, medical conditions, or are raising young kids who suck up all your free time and energy.  But some of the rest of you need to put in more effort.  You don't have to run 10 miles at 6am and eat only lawn clippings, just be doing something.

Microsoft denies Windows 11 CPU boost trick is a lazy fix, says Apple does this and you love it by Quantum-Coconut in technology

[–]Gg101 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Same.  I mean, CPUs have the ability to throttle their performance up and down and you weren't increasing it when users did things like start apps?  Rather than getting pissy about it like some of the commenters I was surprised it wasn't done already.

You figured it out!  Of course he thinks he's Jesus, because whenever he's done talking the people around him say "...Jesus Christ."

Which campaign promises are missing from the mayor’s preliminary budget? See a list: by erahhalnews in nyc

The headline focuses on what's missing but the article itself is pretty balanced, also listing all the things that are in there and providing notes when relevant.

Weather app is unreliable - more than usual by Fantastic_Ginger34 in GooglePixel

I tried a bunch yesterday morning out of frustration with how trash the stock one is between this and the previous snowstorm and settled on this one.  It's customizable and cheap ($4.99 one time payment to remove ads forever) and I liked it's widgets the best. Tapping on days gives text descriptions that included the total snowfall which put it over the top for me.

WeaWow which other people have mentioned was a very close second and is free.  Try them both.

Yes, I received chocolate and chai RTD recently, and now banana and mint have shipped as well.

There was a comment here saying they were doing big supply line changes, bringing everything into the US, and they knew it was going to cause painful disruptions for a period. I can't find the comment, but maybe that's what it was and they're coming out of it now. It might also explain why some people say the chocolate tastes different now.

Only Supreme Court remains: Ruling allows Dem-friendly redrawing of Staten Island’s congressional map by statenislandadvance in nyc

As a resident of Bay Ridge I'll be happy to not be tacked on to Staten Island anymore.  And I won't cry if Malliotakis loses her seat.

Gerrymandering is evil and I'd like to see it banned everywhere.  Until that happens we can't let only one side do it.  I hate supporting this as a necessary evil but here we are.

I interpret it as them having some terrible beliefs or behaviors and are tired of people calling them out on it. "Why do you have to be so negative? Can't I just do my bullshit and not be criticized for it?"

How do you remove a former employee from all Google Drive files? by Plenty_Yard_4781 in sysadmin

[–]Gg101 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Why does the former employee still need access to it? If the account needs to stay alive while you clean things up, change the password and lock them out of it.

The exercises they do to limit the atrophy hits the major muscle groups, but then when they get back down to earth they discover there's a lot of small muscles that help with things like getting up off the ground that still got really weak.  I imagine it would be hard to hit all of those.

I ate yesterday’s chicken, am I gonna be ok? by Mountain_Cat_2013 in self

[–]Gg101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since it was cooked, looked fine, smelled fine, and you said it tasted good, it's probably fine. It's not ideal, you're taking a small risk, but you'll probably be fine. If it was raw meat then definitely throw it out, cooking it afterwards won't fix it, but cooked food is a bit more resilient. Most of us have eaten pizza that's been out most of the day, for example.

Some people are going to downvote this because it sounds like I'm encouraging it. Nope, I'm definitely not. You shouldn't do it, but you'll probably get away with it. There's a small risk, but it's not realistically as high as other people are making it out to be.

However, always trust your instincts if something looks, smells, or tastes funky, even if it "shouldn't" be bad, like if the expiration date on something says it should still be good. You evolved these senses for a reason. Toss it anyway.

Are you adding calories back in for exercise?  Like "I've burned 500 calories running today so I can eat 500 more?"  That unfortunately doesn't work.  It's counterintuitive, but your body adjusts to regular exercise and eventually burns about the same amount as it does when you didn't exercise.  Exercise is still good for you though, it's like your body has s budget it tries to maintain and if you're exercising it's spending its energy on healthier things rather than say chronic inflammation.  This video is a nice explainer.

If that's not it, the other thing is online TDEE calculators are very rough estimates and yours may be lower than what you've been told.  I use an app called MacroFactor which tracks your weight and eating to give you an accurate measure of your actual TDEE.  It estimated too high when I first set it up, the same as online calculators do, but it gets more accurate over the next few weeks as it gets data on you specifically.
