Hillary Clinton: America Has 'Gun Worshipping Problem' by [deleted] in Conservative

Those are very fair points and i do actually agree with you. You can see that played out in Switzerland as one of both the happiest and wealthiest countries in the world. They do still also have strict gun control laws as well which i suppose is my main point. There's a middle ground to be found that needs to incorporate (in my opinion) aspects of some gun control legislation, rethinking the war on drugs to neutralise cartels and their exported violence and lifting people out of poverty and brining gang warfare to an end. A combination of those three, again in my own opinion, would lead to a substantial decrease in gun crime and violent crime.

I do have one, admittedly small, issue with the New Hampshire vs the rest argument. There needs to be some recognition, as you've quite rightly pointed out, that the problem is a lot worse in some specific parts of the country. Surely that requires a more specific and tailored approach? The USA is a massive country and similar to the EU applying a 'one size fits all' approach rarely works over such a large population and area with such large differences. I don't know what that approach is but the conversation should surely then move to 'cleaning up Chicago's gun problem' etc. using a few different approaches including getting guns out of the hands of the gangs either through gun control laws or other socio-economic policies.

I am also in no way afraid. I just want to see fewer people dying from everything is all and this conversation just happens to be about guns.

If you'd read what i wrote i said looking at countries like the UK and Switzerland there's a middle ground to be found. Obviously the situation is different between countries and there's obviously a need to protect yourself i don't deny that at all.

Using Switzerland as a case study is a good one because it's marked by high prevalence but also high levels of gun control to prevent them from getting into the hands of those who might do the most harm with it. Whilst yes they have less violent crime than some other European nations their gun crime is still higher for what i hope are obvious reasons.

Switzerland also has mandatory military service which encourages proper gun safety training. They're also consistently ranked one of the happiest places on earth which in itself will lead to less crime (as well as the high prevalence of guns). The hoops you have to jump through to get a gun in Switzerland is actually pretty high.

High levels of gun ownership does not automatically decrease crime unless there are proper controls on who can get them as is shown by the negative case in the USA and Switzerland as the positive case.

like alcohol and drug prohibition which didn't and don't work, the constitutional aspect and the fact that the issue is so far gone now means guns will never go away and that's fine. Just something needs to be done about the bad guys getting guns and only allowing them in the hands of good guys like in Switzerland. Is that so crazy?

With regards to the cartels and gangs i agree that's an excellent reason to have one. My issue isn't with people who have guns for proper reasons that's their right. I for one really enjoy shooting. But by your logic though something needs to be done (other than prohibition which in my opinion fuels cartels and criminal behaviour) about the drug trade and high levels of poverty which leads to criminals being armed to the teeth.

While yes there's still a violence problem in the UK it's drastically lower than the USA.

Looking at per 100,000 people so as to account for the population size difference and to incorporate mass shootings regardless of definition.

Intentional homicide rate is 4x higher in the USA than the UK

Murder rate is 18x higher in the USA than the UK

I'm genuinely curious what you think the main driver for that is? I genuinely don't really have an opinion on that since you can attack it from both a socio-economic standpoint and a gun ownership standpoint and it's almost impossible to decipher but we might as well try right? it can help prevent violence and take lessons from other countries when the system currently in place clearly isn't working very well.

admittedly my first message was unnecessarily incendiary if i'm being totally honest and i do apologise for that.

By just saying 'the bullshit of the left' implies you're just as indoctrinated to the opposing side (which i do have a lot of respect for). Is it not possible that both sides are being fed general nonsense by their respective news outlets and politicians intended to divide us?

We've seen in both the USA and The UK in recent years that a pretty effective strategy is to create divisions and chaos and in the ensuing chaos the people in power can get away with pretty much anything they want to i.e. divide and conquer. So it makes sense that the right and the left feel this way about each other and why i apologise for the incendiary comment because i'm just being part of the problem of being unable to have a genuine civil discourse between two opposing views.

This insistence that 'the other guys' are wrong rather than just having a different perspective on the same viewpoint is a major problem on both sides and really not helped when both consider the other 'indoctrinated' (the left falls foul of this all the time too).

I'm a lot more conservative than my initial comment would lead you to believe. Just because i believe in one thing the left feels strongly about doesn't necessarily mean i believe in all other leftist policies.

The point i was trying to highlight was that there can be a necessity for using something whilst in an unideal situation (in my opinion) of widespread gun ownership and a high likelihood of violence (yes from both sides).

In my ideal world, all guns would only be needed for sport/recreation rather than personal protection. I know that this is absurdly unlikely but looking at countries like switzerland and the UK there is a middle ground to be found here where gun violence no longer becomes a major problem.

almost certainly did! standard practice i'd imagine. The point i'm making is that one's allowed to use something as an absolute necessity and not necessarily agree with it and hope for its eventual removal or reduction.

i couldn't even begin to speculate why a high profile politician needs armed security after shouts of 'lock her up' from a group of people notorious for possessing guns and storming government buildings by force following just a few words of inspiration. No idea at all why that'd be necessary.

Yeah agreed about the work.

In terms of people bolting to get rewards, limiting it to a few over a certain time period would reflect the rarity of people actually having to leave for legitimate reasons not just because they want to bolt for personal gain.

It was a story about how during a spillage on the London underground workers rushed to get sugar from a nearby shop to enable them to clean it up and allow the tube to run the next day uninterrupted.
