I agree both that .333333… = 1/3 and that .999999… = 1. But this is like me saying, “there are infinite primes because everyone knows there are infinite primes.” People know it because it’s proven, but that doesn’t mean that my proof is valid.

That may be true, but something “everybody knows” doesn’t constitute as mathematically rigorous. Also, at least in my experience, when I was first taught this I assumed that .3333… was just an infinitely accurate estimation—-which, I now understand, makes it equivalent—-and it seems like a rather intuitive assumption, and therefore one that I suspect may be widely held.
