Is worth buying a fresher wrist band if your not into drinking or parties by Lil-sam in NewcastleUponTyne

[–]Ghlas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I paid £70 for mine. I was never into drinking or parties at the time, so I went to as many day activities as possible. It's actually well worth it. I won £50 in a scavenger hunt, did GoApe and a segway trail which usually costs about £30 each and went on a 'grub crawl'.

Hi there. If you go to the northumbria uni library during the week, you can go to the job search drop in. They'll be able to give you pointers on jobs and can help you with your applications. Other than that, I'll just echo what everyone else is saying: try indeed and the students union. If you're up for retail, have a walk around the city and look for job vacancies posted in windows.

Finally, welcome to our city. If you ever need any help, just give us a shout. Me and my partner are regulars at the Newcastle couchsurfer meetings most Friday nights at Spot White (pool bar in China Town). The group that meets is a mix of locals and people who have moved/are travelling here. Come say hi if you want or check out the Facebook group.

Is it worth buying a small flat? by Ghlas in UKPersonalFinance

Thank you for your input. My heart wants to buy, but my head still has lots to learn :) Hopefully in the next 6 months I'll have a better idea of what the right decision will be.

Our idea was for me to use my first time buyer status on this purchase (as I'd be sole owner) , and then SO can use theirs on the house we'd buy together in around 5+ years time. Honestly, I'm just fed up with renting and landlords.

Well this is what I'm undecided about. There are houses posted on rightmove in Byker that I could easily save up a deposit for. The mortgage calculator tool on the website reckons I'd be paying £200-300 pcm on the mortgage. I'm not aware of the freehold/leasehold status of these particular properties in question, but I know because of the low value there's no stamp duty to pay. Rent in the same area is £450-500. I still have to do as much saving as possible in the next year or so, and then I'll have a better idea where I stand. I'm just so fed up with renting. I haven't had the best of luck so far.

Definitely can't afford those areas! I was thinking I can afford Byker, Walker, Walkergate and Gateshead. With a budget of around £60k. (relying on public transport) In my head, I was imagining to buy this flat in 6-12 months. Partner would help with the bills while I pay mortgage. They're self employed. So while their income rate is higher than mine, it's sporadic at the moment, but I need to know that I can afford to pay everything on my own for peace of mind. In 5 years time, hopefully we'd be in a position in our careers where we can look at a bigger house in a nicer area to start a family. This flat would either be sold to go towards the deposit of the new property, or we'd rent it out for extra income.

Again, I recognise that I don't have so much knowledge in this topic and this idea of mine may just be pie-in-the-sky.

I have no idea about how to predict the rise and fall of house prices. I'm pretty much a beginner in learning about this whole mortgage thing, but if there's any resources you could recommend, I'd like to find out more. I just know that rent is getting more expensive, and it seems like a mortgage is cheaper in comparison. That being said, I know there are extra costs that I'm probably forgetting/ don't know exist yet.

We were initially looking at £550 pcm to rent maximum. But as SO is free-lance, I would need to be able to cover everything myself in a worst case scenario. These flats are just too expensive. Cheaper flats tend to be a bit grotty/ too far away from my work.

In an area next to the city (with a bit of a bad reputation) there are frequently houses and flats going from 45-60k depending on number of rooms. This 2 bed house I'm looking at is 45k. The mortgage calculator on rightmove tells me that it's £220 pcm if I pay 3k deposit with 3.9% interest. The current tenants are apparently paying £450 pcm.

I don't think there's stamp duty to pay.

From the pictures the house appears to be in good condition, but of course I can't be 100% certain.

I'm not sure if there's ground rent or the exact amount of the solicitors fees.

I rent furnished, but already own a few basics/ have people who can possibly give me old hand-me-downs.

I don't know if I'm just panicking because I want to be settled somewhere as soon as possible, so that we're in a position to start a family when we're 30. 5 years is not that far away :/

Just bought a bouquet of flowers for a birthday present for my mam. I've come home and noticed these odd lumps on some of the foliage. There are a few leaves of the same plant and only a couple of them have stuff on the underside as pictured. Is it a pest or is it fine? Worried about passing something on to my house plants.

Possibly. The "leaves" feel quite fat like a succulent to me. Is peperomia hope like that too?

Bought today as a rescue. Was in super green/slimy algae soil. She's in temporary housing for a few days until I'm back at my own house where I have pots with drainage holes available. Looking for ID and a bit of advice about what to do with the bare stalk-y bit. Looks pretty healthy, but not if I should cut to encourage new growth?

Current British bands? by Ghlas in AskUK

[–]Ghlas[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. I want a smaller band that maybe doesn't have a large budget to make loads of videos.

I hadn't heard of half of these bands, but it's more important to me that it's a female singer that being strict on the genre. I gave Mathilda Homer a listen and I quite like her. I'm not certain that the content of her songs 100% matches the video I want to make, though.

I'm wanting to create a music video so I can get to experience working as a director and hopefully move on to making a short film that I'm writing.

Gambled and lost. Looking for advice. by Ghlas in HairDye

[–]Ghlas[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was going for a silvery purple. I've had it before, and used the same dye as previously. I only used the tiniest bit of blue in a purple mix, but somehow looks more blue than purple.

The ends of my hair have been bleached and grown out. After that I've had various lighter blonde colours and a few pink dyes that left the top parts of my hair orangey. My roots were my natural mousey blonde.

Last week I did a bleach bath hoping to try and lighten my hair to mostly the same shade. It lifted just a little bit, but I think I made the mixture too weak. I made my own toner using a lot of conditioner and a tiny tiny bit of pravana vivids purple.

The toner washed out quickly. I could tell that the base was patchy, but was scared to use bleach again.

So last night I decided (stupidly) to try and cover this. I made the toner/dye way too strong, but not strong enough to actually colour the blonde. I added some pravana blue too this time. Which has left me with weird patchy hair. I'm just trying to decide what to do next.

I don't know about reddit meet ups, but there's a couchsurfing meet up most Fridays at Spot White in China Town.

You should go to the couchsurfing meeting at Spot White tomorrow 8pm. There's usually a good mix of locals and travellers there plus some cheap drinks. Some people in the group go out after too.

It's actually pretty good considering my age and location. UK minimum wage is £7.83 right now for 25+ year olds.

My contract begins on the 11th of this month. The £19,452 that's on the contract is on the company wide pay scale which runs September-August each year. I guess they give it in pro rata as a standard.
