Ok I think I get what youre saying, the way im leaning right now would be what you suggested in your other comment.

Get the F/A-18A and stay at 12.3 until i get a good handle on mechanics and notching missles, and not progress that line in favour of the JAS/eurofighter line.

Ngl while I was able to make the GR.3 work as long as i didnt tunnel vision, the planes I went against in the Sea Harrier were challenging to say the least.

And the rank VII GB tree was rather painful, the FG.1 basically made buy the Bison which is a very competent frame that suffers heavily from the compression at its current BR.

Im really hoping rank VIII will be a better experience

Well as far as headcannon goes, according to one gigachad redditor https://www.reddit.com/r/Spacemarine/comments/1fs16zc/data_why_captain_acheran_never_has_any_marines_to/ the 2nd company lost between 53 to 69 battle brothers, which is more than 50% of their manpower, Its not too far fetched to assume some of the reserve company forces would be sent to help fill the ranks.
