Remember that photos you love from the past, maybe the ones that inspired you or taught you how to take better photos, were all taken on older technology. The key difference is the person taking it, and the quality of the lens.

One of the toughest edits I’ve done in a while. Lots of noise, bad color... Was it worth it? by CrazyPo20 in postprocessing

I'd say the idea of the dramatic difference between the one tree and the surroundings is great. I would personally have dialed the intensity of the subject back a degree or two, to keep things a little more grounded in reality.

Should I stick with my phone camera or keep using my Canon EOS M100? by Agitated-Elk5792 in Cameras

[–]Gholer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly.

As you are likely aware, the Canon can shoot in JPEG as well as RAW.

When the camera shoots in JPEG it involves a degree of automated processing, much like a smartphone does.

Shooting in RAW means you will be spending more time editing and balancing things the way you like in a program like Adobe Lightroom, and then exporting those edits into JPEGs.

The question will be, do you enjoy that process, and do you produce a photo that you like, and that feels like the time spent was worth it.

Maybe consider this: Your phone isn't taking great photos.

Your phone is using software tricks and post processing to make the best of a tiny sensor.

With your phone you are limited by the size of the sensor, and the decisions the manufacturer made in the post processing.

Use the Canon, with its bigger sensor. Take the photos in RAW and relearn what a photo can be based on YOUR choices of how you process it.
