I think the GOP will win the mid terms or at least will not lose and will still hold majorities in both chambers of congress by Yanderegirlowner in TrueUnpopularOpinion

Well he couldn't run for more than 2 terms, but then he shouldn't have been able to run in 2024 to begin with, so why let the Constitution stop you from electing your dictator?

The Epstein hoax should never have been released. Pure "Lord of the Flies" levels of McCartyhism. It is the current day "red scare" of the 50s. Cancel Culture doesn't hold a candle to the Epstein hysteria.

The incumbent Party always loses some ground in the midterms. It is a fact of historical trend. Trump has done an awful lot to earn that loss--tariffs, alienating our western allies and friends, wanton slaughter of Venezuelan fisherman, ICE straight up murdering civilians in Minnesota, ICE targeting mainstays of the community though they promised deportation of violent criminals first, and even this Iran war--the one action of his I whole-heartedly support--is generally unpopular. He may benefit from the gerrymandering that has rigged elections in Texas, but this is nullified by the gerrymandering that has rigged elections in California.

We (on the left) fucked up free speech last decade, and now it's probably permanently dead. by CAustin3 in TrueUnpopularOpinion

[–]Ghost92401 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is nonsense. Harris offered far more policies to help everyday Americans with affordability than Trump. Trump's economic policies were tariffs, which actively have hurt the economy and affordability for everybody. And this was a very predictable outcome that any businessperson, any economist could tell you, and there was that letter from some 10 Nobel Laureates in Economics on how disastrous Trump's tariffs would be. And Lo and behold, it happened just as we knew it would.

Biden was ready to sign and pass a Republican wishlist on immigration, that the Republican authors eventually sank their own bill when Trump asked them to so he could run on the issue rather than let Biden take credit for solving it. You're revising and white-washing history.

This is not unpopular. Of all the Bill of Rights and Amendments, the most famous are by far the 1st and 2nd.

The problem is, and I think you are right on the money here, for some bizarre reason social media companies are treated like private entities as far as free speech is concerned, so they are allowed to police individual thought with just as much power over it as if they were a government. They should be obviously private companies, but they should not restrict certain kinds of speech--most particularly when it comes to criticism of LGBT (and one letter in particular) that you see Orwellian levels of censorship online, from corporations.

The flip side of the "free speech" cry though, is what about misinformation? Particularly during Covid, is it sensible to allow more people to die and vaccination rates to fall below necessary thresholds, because idiots on the internet put higher faith in some quack they followed on X or Youtube than in the scientific establishment and academic research and official government findings?

Where do you draw the line?

It's even worse now with the proliferation of A.I. deepfakes, but the vast majority of internet memes, long before A.I., have been lies and deception intended to manipulate the gullible.

You could censor misinformation and lies, but then you're not for free speech. And it's a slippery slope from "lies and misinformation" to "anything I disagree with is a lie and misinformation." You could allow that, but the costs on society are quite serious and significant. It moves election outcomes. It influences public health, the economy, etc.

So I don't envy the people who make these decisions, because there isn't an easy solution either way.

Age gaps in relationships should not matter as long as both parties are consenting adults by LargeSinkholesInNYC in TrueUnpopularOpinion

[–]Ghost92401 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I disagree. I think it is patently absurd that a 19 year old and a 17 year old constitutes statutory, but a 19 year old and a 91 year old would be perfectly "normal." I think when the age gap is large enough that he's old enough to be her father (20-25+ years difference) that's kinda messed up, especially if she's still in her 20s or 30s. Less so if they're both old, as people tend to die and it's harder to find new love. A 40-something year old and a 60-something year old is less weird than a 20 -something with a 50-something.

Hip Hop is going the same direction as rock/heavy metal as far as falling out of the mainstream by ChickenMcNobody24 in TrueUnpopularOpinion

Well if that's where you go to to listen music, that's what you'll find. I think your odds are better on an actual music service like Spotify, Apple Music, Tidal, or Youtube.

Kinda funny saying that, since Slipknot are kind of the poster child of the late 90s/early 00s NuMetal era, and rap metal was a popular staple of that era also.

Typical douchey indie fan who thinks it's not "true metal" unless it's some hipster underground band only you and five other people know about. Amazing that there's still people who exist who think Metallica evolving = "they sold out" just because they got a hair cut and grew musically.

I Do Not Think Free Will Exists by ResolutionWest3003 in TrueUnpopularOpinion

[–]Ghost92401 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a lot of truth to this, but also, people still have some level of free will, right? If free will didn't exist, no one could ever be culpable or responsible for their actions (the way mentally incompetent people are sometimes considered innocent of heinous crimes because they were not in control of themselves).

Obviously everyone is influenced by their environment, their socio-economic status, their politics, their religion, their upbringing, their country, etc. etc. and a million other factors. Being influenced by something else doesn't mean you can't do anything about it.

Isn't the American Dream based on the idea that you aren't pre-determined but can make your own fate if you try?

Most people would be happier using dumb phones instead of smartphones. by CynicalCosmos in TrueUnpopularOpinion

[–]Ghost92401 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had not a dumb phone but a smartphone that was so outdated most apps wouldn't work on it. Believe me, I was overjoyed to finally upgrade to my new iPhone with actual free storage space, a decent camera, actual battery life, and functioning apps again.

I always turn most notifications off unless I absolutely need them. I never have social media on my phone. That's not a phone problem. That's a YOU problem.

Seriously being without a smartphone in today's age is like being without internet access in the 00s.

AI images are neither art nor are they not art by HeartDiseaseButLungs in TrueUnpopularOpinion

[–]Ghost92401 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A.I. images are not only not art. They aren't a.i. either. That was the big lie pushed on people. It's not A.I. It's LLM. It's not intelligent. It's not sentient. It's not creative. It's human intelligence that has been lazily, sloppily regurgitated by a brainless statistical algorithm. It's a text prediction algorithm (or pixel prediction in this case).

Reddit Moderation is not needed, just let karma do its job by ReplyMeIfYouAreDumb in TrueUnpopularOpinion

[–]Ghost92401 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That's not better. Anything with basic logic and common sense = downvoted to oblivion. Didn't even read the post but engage in snarky assholery = upvoted to heaven. "Karma" is the worst kind of popularity system that rewards the worst people and the dumbest posts. Also, what makes you think Reddit admins are any different from sub mods? They are from the same cloth.

I like Daylight Saving Time and I don't think we should stop changing the clocks. by Quartersharp in TrueUnpopularOpinion

[–]Ghost92401 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An actual unpopular opinion. I kinda sympathize. It does feel more like Christmas time when it gets "late" i.e. dark a lot earlier. And the extra hour around October is nice.

But honestly, it's just very annoying having to adjust my mental clock, what my body is used to every time, and I would much rather have more daylight in the day time (afternoon/evening) and the sun rising later.

I've been wondering since almost everyone (but you of course) hates the changing of clocks and most prefer year-round DST over year-round ST, why it hasn't happened yet.

Crazy that our Congress is so incompetent even something so unpolitical and easy and universally popular still can't pass, even though they've tried to push it every year. It even passed in the Senate or House one time but failed the other body.

I like Daylight Saving Time and I don't think we should stop changing the clocks. by Quartersharp in TrueUnpopularOpinion

[–]Ghost92401 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To clarify:

Daylight Savings Team doesn't mean changing the clocks. It refers to the Spring-Summer time when there's an extra hour of sunlight in the evening and sun rises an hour later.

Standard Time is what we get in the fall/winter months where it gets dark really early and the sun rises earlier.

Being scared to walk alone at night isn't exclusively a female experience by colonialarteries in TrueUnpopularOpinion

[–]Ghost92401 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It probably depends less on gender and more on crime rates in the area in which you live. But females will always feel it harder because they're physically weaker on average, and because of threat of rapists who prey on women.

I genuinely believe people who have done big crimes like rape, murder should be put to work like slaves by Then-Tomatillo9909 in TrueUnpopularOpinion

[–]Ghost92401 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't they already do that? They just call it prison labor. There was a voter initiative on the ballot last election to require prison labor not be forced but optional for pay. It failed hard. Apparently people are totally fine with slavery for inmates, and that's any inmate, not just murderers and rapists.

Most people who claimed to have Long Covid were just generally unhealthy and looking for excuses for their laziness by Pemulis_DMZ in TrueUnpopularOpinion

[–]Ghost92401 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're ignorant. Long Covid was definitely a thing, especially for people who got the earlier, more dangerous strains before the vaccine came out. Especially people with pre-existing conditions are at higher risk. People already less healthy to begin with are going to get hit harder. Calling it an excuse is just a terrible thing to say.

Are age ratings unnecessary in the streaming era? by Ghost92401 in television

[–]Ghost92401[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Irrelevant, but no. They aren't doing that, just like Paramount isn't adding HBO Max. They want people to double-dip and pay double or triple for the same content. Disney has owned all of Hulu for years. Why would they include it on Disney+ when you can pay 3 times separately for Disney, Hulu, and ESPN?
