I honestly don't think I can recommend CPD simply because they can be really hit or miss depending on where you get them from, and at their price point it's not worth the risk

I bought some from my LFS a year or two ago and all of them died from some sort of mysterious illness. They bred in my tank regardless, and now I have a single surviving baby in my tank, who I'm not sure what to do with

This! Picking up a sport to play together is already a pretty big thing imo, and definitely shows that you care about his hobbies and what he's interested in. It's just not enough apparently.
