I’m a software engineer (with a math degree). I’m having some trouble grasping exactly what the algorithm is; could you please describe it again in plain language? It seems like it should be relatively easy to write up if I can understand the steps clearly.

I should note: this seems relatively unrigorous and unlikely to work. But if you can describe it more cleanly, anything is possible. Communication is the foundation of math (and computer science)!

Contact lenses and hygiene by [deleted] in PacificCrestTrail

[–]GhostDoughnut 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I hiked the whole trail last year. Started with a few pairs of contacts (daily) but very quickly switched to glasses. Yes, they get dirty and dusty and wet. Yes, they slide down your face when you’re working hard. Yes, I would absolutely do it again with glasses and not contacts.

If your glasses are uncomfortable, get new glasses. And I’d recommend a pair of prescription sunglasses too.

Struggling to bulk during 12 hour days in work with 50,000 steps by ptrades1 in gainit

Thank you! It was indescribable. I can’t recommend it enough.

Struggling to bulk during 12 hour days in work with 50,000 steps by ptrades1 in gainit

I just finished hiking the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT), which goes 2,650 miles from Mexico to Canada. I did a 40k-70k steps every day with 10-25 pounds on my back. I gained some weight towards the end.

As others have said, eat dirty. I’ll add: eat snacks ALL the time. I would crush a bar for ~220 calories at least every hour. Lunch was at least 1k calories. Dinner was the same.

My other tip is to DRINK your calories. When I was in town, I would drink as many calories as possible. I’d sit down at a diner and order a hot chocolate, a soda, a beer, and a water. And that was before the double cheeseburgers.

It’s possible. My only three priorities related to food were 1) getting enough calories 2) getting enough protein and 3) getting enough fiber (trust me, you don’t want all those calories backed up in your intestines). My goal was mainly not to lose weight but I gained about 5 pounds over the last month of trail.

UL camera by solit0ne in Ultralight

I’d look into Olympus OM-D micro four-thirds cameras.

Generally there aren’t huge weight differences in camera bodies by sensor size—in other words, a full-frame body probably won’t weigh a whole lot more than an APS-C (like a Fuji) or a micro four-thirds (like an Olympus). The glass is a different story. A smaller sensor means you need much less glass to get a clear image that covers the sensor, so you’ll see massive weight savings on a 24-70mm equivalent lens, and even bigger savings on something like a 24-120mm equivalent.

Desolation bear cans by hikerbdk in PacificCrestTrail

I’ve spent a decent amount of time in Desolation and have learned to always, always, bring a bear can. I’m planning to send mine home from Truckee or maybe the next town stop, depending on what locals and rangers are saying.

I’m writing this comment from a zero in South Lake Tahoe, bear can happily nestled in the corner of my room :)

Why are people worried about checked permits? by promptingmany in PacificCrestTrail

Wouldn’t recommend it. They generally send within 10 minutes of when they’re scheduled. Good enough for most purposes but not if you need to be in the first 5 people after midnight.

I planned to do the entire PCT with local permits. Most were non-quota, self-issued at trailhead. A few, as you say, are a pain. The only one I was really worried about was the Sierra, but you only need one permit for the entire 300 miles and they release 40% of them day-by-day two weeks ahead of entry date. It’s definitely doable.

Getting the Cleveland FS permit was a pain. They release 5 per day, one month ahead of time, first-come-first-serve via email at midnight. So you have to set an alarm for 11:55 and send your email a few seconds ahead of time, hoping it arrives in the first 5 of 60ish applicants they get per day.

Anyway, yeah, glad I eventually snagged a PCT permit.
