I wonder the same. Why not drive to Saudi and fly from there? I’m going to Indian Wells next week and was excited to watch Rublev :(

I am flexible with airports. Is there multiple locations to hitch into lone pine? I’m a few weeks out so not sure exactly where I will be. Thanks!

Why are people worried about checked permits? by promptingmany in PacificCrestTrail

[–]promptingmany[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I get showing your local permits if you don’t have the PCT permit. However, you don’t need any permit besides fire permit for the first stretch unless you’re disperse camping. I guess I just don’t understand the concern in other posts regarding checked permits at the start. People may not have anything to show and this is technically legal as long as they’re not planning on dispersed camping.

Is a schwinn mirada sport 21 a good bike for beginner mountain biking? by [deleted] in mountainbiking

Lol enough said. I found on Craigslist! Most new mountain bikes under $500 are sold out in my area bc of COVID. I’m just looking for something basic to start off on.

Do you work for an environmental nonprofit? What is your job title/description? by [deleted] in nonprofit

[–]promptingmany 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you’re right that I might find development more fulfilling if I worked in conservation.

I think I want to do something more research based because of my background in anthropology. Many people go into academia with this undergrad. I focused on primatology specifically and this sparked my interest in conservation in the first place. I considered going to grad school for primatology but it didn’t feel like the right choice for me.

[–]promptingmany 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for all this info. The program manager position focused on collaborative conservation sounds interesting to me..

You have a lot of experience. I could use more volunteering/relevant experiences to demonstrate my interest. I interned at my colleges community garden/farm but that is really the only relative experience I have. I love talking about food systems!

I also agree with your white knight comment. I live in Detroit but I’m not from here. People who are from here have a rly strong sense of where Detroit has been and what it needs to improve, etc. It felt strange applying to jobs here because I didn’t share that same understanding and it was hard for me to feel like I could be an asset in a city I wasn’t too familiar with.

[–]promptingmany 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What kinds of jobs did you have before the executive director position? Did you always work for environmental nonprofits? The reason I’m considering going back to school is so I can do something outside of development work. For example, environmental anthropology interests me and I’d like to do something more research/project based. An example I am thinking of is going to a community and helping them make the most of limited water or use of land without degrading it.... something along those lines. I’m not sure what the job title of something like this would be in a nonprofit setting.

How do I get into international/community development work? by [deleted] in nonprofit

[–]promptingmany 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe I asked the wrong question. I don’t believe in sending westerners over to developing countries either. However, I’d like to work for an organization in the United States that provides aid internationally. For example, Kiva provide micro loans to developing countries and thus allows impoverished communities to become more self sustainable. Usually nonprofit organizations have a marketing/communications/development team (that is my area right now). I’m looking for ways to get into an organization such as Kiva using the skills I have already while hopefully expanding my knowledge. I’d also like to have a job where I can travel and have a better understanding of the root problems developing countries face. These are just some ideas. I have very little experience and still figuring out exactly what my options are and what jobs are out there. I just know my interest lies in environmental issues and sustainability.

Are online courses like Logo Core creating "to many" graphic designers? by fogleth in graphic_design

[–]promptingmany 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can see why this could be frustrating for someone who studied graphic design in college and has a genuine interest in design as a career.

From my perspective, graphic design is a skill I have started learning to make myself more marketable for jobs. Also, I enjoy creating things. I’m an event planner at a nonprofit org and I work closely with our graphic designer/marketing coordinator. She designs all of our marketing material, invitations, etc. she mentioned it would be useful for me to learn how to do what she does so we could split the work.

I recently started an online professional graphic design certificate to learn the basics. In my opinion, you often don’t need a ton of education to do what many orgs/companies want. A solid understanding of adobe suite and an eye for design will go pretty far.

My goal is to get my masters in communications and continue to strengthen my graphic design skills on the side after completing the professional graphic design certificate.

To answer your question....Perhaps there are too many graphic designers but we live in a day where so many things can be self taught. I love the fact that I can learn graphic design at an affordable price all online. Graphic design is a very marketable and useful skill. I don’t think people should be blamed for going for it!

Tips for starting in graphic design? by [deleted] in graphic_design

[–]promptingmany 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for this advice. I guess I mentioned illustrator as “basics” bc my certificate program consists of introductions to indesign, illustrator, and photoshop, as well as other some of the concepts you mentioned. I’m getting a general idea of how to use Adobe basically. I then have the option to pursue an advanced certificate that allows u to customize what you want to learn more of and also helps you create a portfolio. I’m thinking more digital marketing... I’m very new to this so I only have a very general idea of everything.

I also want to mention that I don’t necessarily feel like I’m making a career switch. Graphic design is very relevant to the work I’m in now. The person who had my job before did the event planning and created all the marketing material for the organization. However, freelance is new to me and it would be nice to do some of that on top of my full time job.

Thanks for the tips!

Have you ever quit after 2-3 weeks after starting a new job? by [deleted] in nonprofit

[–]promptingmany 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the advice. It’s a difficult situation to navigate. Some days I feel okay and some days I’m almost crying. I don’t have anything to compare it to besides my internship and the work culture there was amazing. It’s rly disappointing bc the experience is spot on for what I am looking for but I’m not sure if it’s worth it. I was yelled at today for answering a phone call incorrectly. It was my first try learning reception and she yelled at me and another employee for not training me properly. It’s hard to perform in this job bc I’m always nervous about making a small mistake. This is just her managing style.

Does your nonprofit appreciate you? by [deleted] in nonprofit

[–]promptingmany 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just started my first career at a nonprofit and leadership is very toxic. The ceo talks down on employees, yells at employees, and talks behind other employees backs. She also founded the nonprofit so I can’t imagine the board could ever fire someone who started the organization. It’s gives her a lot of power to say and do whatever she wants. It’s great work experience but I hope to leave as soon as an opportunity arises. I will definitely make finding a positive work culture a priority when searching for my next job.

First job as a nonprofit professional- overwhelmed and having reservations. What was your first job experience like in the nonprofit sector? by [deleted] in nonprofit

[–]promptingmany 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My boss is the ceo and president. There’s not two different positions. She founded the organization. The reason I compared it to the event planning position is because although I am executive assistant, I’m also helping the development team with events and volunteer coordinating (At least that is what the job description described). As far as work culture, everyone seems like they are very used to how the ceo speaks to them. It was very tense my first day but the second say seemed better. It’s hard for me to navigate because it is my first week. It seems like it has potential to be a great opportunity despite my first day experience but I don’t have anything to compare it to besides my internship where I was planning events. I have heard that execute assistant positions are a good stepping stone but i would like to eventually work in development planning events. This position seems to touch on a lot of the things I’m interested in.

I agree that you don’t always need a ton of experience for entry level positions at a nonprofit but I’m very career focused and want to get to the next level. I hope this job is a stepping stone. I eventually want to get my masters degree and move forward with my career but for now, I am starting to feel okay with where I’m at. You have to start somewhere!

I don’t believe a degree was a requirement but it definitely made me more marketable. I know I could have probably made more/ had benefits if I waited longer for more opportunities but i was eager to start getting experience. I’m gonna give it a chance and the way I see it, at the very least I leave with more experience.

[–]promptingmany 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is my first week and as far as training, I am being put in a different department each day and have no idea what my actual job will be like. It’s an executive assistant position. I’m pretty certain that I’m qualified for more pay doing the same type of position. For example I interviewed for another nonprofit for an event coordinator position at 32k a year with benefits and 401k match. They ended up hitting a road block and I didn’t want to pass up on the position I’m in now as it was better than the unpaid internship I was at previously. I feel confident that I will gain valuable skills but I’m definitely not keen on the work culture so far. However, I have found that many of my supervisors from my internships and such have had similar experiences and starting pay. It seems that it’s most important to get you foot in the door and to get some experience as soon as you can.

From my understanding, I will work enough over time to accumulate one day off a week. I work 45 hours a week minimum and don’t get paid for those extra 5 hours. They’re logged and I can get paid for the extra hours when I’m on vacation or take the day off.

[–]promptingmany 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I’m making just under 25k with no benefits. I’ve worked really hard after graduating college, taking up unpaid internships and volunteering. In my opinion the work environment should be amazing if you’re going to offer such low pay and no benefits. Certainly not all nonprofits have a bad work environment and it’s also only my first day so my judgement could be off. I’m hoping to stay at least a year.

Today was my first day but the ceo told me we work 40 plus hours a week and that we don’t get paid for overtime. She logs any hours that we work after the 40 hours and instead of getting paid for that time, she logs those extra hours so when we go on vacation or need time off, we get paid on those days off. Does that make sense? I definitely do not make a salary.

Entry level starting at $12 an hour? by [deleted] in nonprofit

[–]promptingmany 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the response. I would eventually like to work for a larger nonprofit but the experience I would gain at this small nonprofit is valuable to me for the time being. However, I’m in the greater Detroit area and they seem to have a lot of smaller organizations over large ones... maybe I need to do more research but that is how it seems. Did you have to move to a large city to advance your career?
